Pet Peeve: Pronunciation

By DigitalChicanery, in X-Wing

"Language evolves" is a much overused explanation/excuse. Not all changes are good. Like that bloody "big of a deal" that's taken hold in America - explain to me how that improves the language! I hear that "of" sneaking into other sentences too; HATE IT HATE IT HATE! And "could care less" as well. You could use "language evolves" to justify that as well, effectively making "could" mean "couldn't", like people use "literally" to mean "not literally". These are bad changes, in my opinion, and should be discouraged.

To be fair evolution is not always good (though using 'good' in this context is in itself an example of language changing since the context is not about moral goodness) from an outside perspective. It is molded by the needs of a group.

Tantive (as in Tantive IV) is pronounced Tan-tiv-vee .

It's taken from "Tantivy".

adverb
1. at full gallop:
"to ride tantivy".
adjective
2. swift; rapid.
noun, plural tantivies.
3. a gallop; rush.
interjection
4.
(used as a hunting cry when the chase is at full speed.)

If they wanted it pronounced Tantivy, they should have spelled it that way.. Tantive.. is Tan-tiv.. no y in there and by the.. can't please everyone I guess. Never knew there was a word 'tantivy' either.

By what you posted I guess there is cause to give it thought, but the english language is fraught with issues like this.. that whole tomato thing, usually it's how you learned it. The english we have created here differs slightly from Her Majesties English, I mean think of the words we use and share with yours. like was mentioned Honor and color.. a 'u' is unnecessary. Theater and theatre,,, Saber and Sabre.. ok those I prefer the British way, but hey, I'm one of those odd kids that grew up on Monty Python.. and the Goodies.. lol..

Language shall be a barrier for as long as people speak them..

Also, would like a reference to where you found that it was taken from 'tantivy' I'd very much like to read up on that.

The

The Star Wars radio drama used the prononciation 'Tantivee.' Considering it was officially recognized and had portions of the movie cast including Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels, I'll take it.

I think it is clear it is the 'official' pronunciation but the point is most people wont use it as in their heads its been 'tan-tiv' for decades and its not worth the effort of forcing yourself to change the name of a toy ship in a game.

I'm rubbish at stuff like this.

I'm a Taoist, while i've been a practicing taoist for some years it wasnt until a few years before I became part of it that I found out it was pronounced 'dow-ist'. For decades of just reading the word i thought it was 'tow-ist' as i'd never heard it spoken aloud.

Even now I have to mentally check myself when reading my daily tao meditations or in discussions of taoism from not reading 't=ow-ism' or 'tow-ist'.

just force of habit.

If i'm speaking face to face with a fellow taoist or asked to explain it by somebody then I *always* pronounce it correctly but reading it I just can't get my brain to make the change.

Or like how Samhain is pronounced sauwan: Nice, nothing in that word is a clue to how it's pronouced... bloody celts :)

Lego is the plural of Lego. End of.

I take it that real world Taoism is nothing like what we see in kung fu movies. No throwing eggs at hopping vampires and such stuff.

^^^ Amen

I like how the Lego group have expressly asked people on their forums not to says 'legos' but some idiots still demand that its the correct collective noun for a collection of Lego bricks.

I'm not *that* into Lego to be upset about it but we had a lego themed wedding so i spent quite a bit of time on Lego forums getting hold of 80s and 90s space stations, castles , fire stations etc

We say Legos. Legos= contraction of Leg o and brick s. Ha! :)

Yeah I cant say I actually *expected* much of that. :)

Changed my life for the better though.

Oh i know a lot of people do but Lego actually ask people not to. Either say Lego or Lego bricks... it's kind of how they want their product named so you sort of have to respect it, well on their forums and FB groups anyway.

Perhaps 'idiots' was a little harsh, you're clearly not an idiot, its just a phrase your used to and even if its wrong you're not going to change as it is an imbedded to you as 'tan-tiv' is to me :)

Well way back in 2000 I lived with a girl for several months in New York, one young Englishman in an African American neighbourhood I got mocked alot for how I talked in a good natured way, got a bit awkward when the cops came around and hassled people of course but being from stoke scuffles in alleys are nothing to worry me.

Didn't work out sadly but I have good memories of that time, and I never took offense when they'd try to do a British accent.

Stoke, get in. Stoke proper or Hanley or some other town in the general Stoke area?

I grew up around Uttoxeter so Hanley (fiction factory & fantasy world) were where i got my gaming models and rules.

I used to go out to chico's and the woodscutter/woodsman a lot too (rock club and biker pub) in the 90s

But yeah my neck of the woods for a while too.

Funniest thing i ever say in Hanley was a tattoist and it had those 'international clocks' above the desk, you know like 'tokyo, london, new york...

Theirs were 'Bentilee, Fenton, Hanley, Stoke, Meer (or something similar) all about two or three seconds out from each other.

You'd have to know Stoke to appreciate that being funny i guess. It's not a true 'city' its a collection of five towns.

Stoke area a little village not far from Newcastle under Lyme, but stoke was always where we went to play gw games, then when we were old enough hit the club's get drunk then try to steal traffic signs for...reasons.

You remember the older forbidden planet in that little arcade near the leather shop, it was pokey but I spent many happy days upstairs, the another world just isn't the same.

Haven't been up Hanley in years, internet is just cheaper and more convenient.

No offence taken. Well it is their product. But do they ban you when you use "legos" on the forum?

I still find it hilarious GW used to ban pepole on forums for saying "squats" :)

Yeah i say tan tiv aswel. Tanivee sounds either like tan-tv (baywatch?) or like you are pronouncing the roman numeral IV alphabetically.

hah cool, i used to date a girl from NuL, lived near the crematorium

Remember that nightclub there, had a pub next to it called the rig or the rigger... had mentally cheap student nights on a monday.. used to take a bus load of us from uttoxeter up to there as it was like 50p a pint or something insane like that.

The whole 'squats' thing was largely the personal crusade of a studio manager who hated them and also because in all honesty they couldnt find a way to back track from the 'fat biker' route they had gone down.

The 'dwarf imperial army' squats were always cool but just never had enough character... both the other achetypes they went for 'medieval hearthguard' and 'bikers' just were not that popular.

I have a 1980 lead models squat army, not painted yet but its a good 1000 points worth or there abouts!

i dont think lego ban people but when the thread inevitably crops up a moderator always comes along and says 'the Lego group ask you to use the word Lego or the phrase Lego Bricks as a plural/collective for Lego and not 'legos' ' ... no one gets antsy about it though.

Just some people weirdly insist they are still right despite the manufacturers telling them how they want their product referred to.

It would be a bit like George Lucas posting on here and saying 'actually guys it *is* tantivee' and then someone posting.... 'no it's not, that's not how *I* say it'

They had cool 40k epic vehicles. Still they looked a bit to warhammer in space (wich frankly 40k IS) with their grudge against the orks and the knotwork and big guns. At least they didn't have big silly hats like the chaos dwarfs.

It's times like this when I write a lengthy reply and my son comes along to erase it all that I question whether or not I should say what I'm about to say.

But I can't help it.

Few things bother me so much.

You can always tell the four types of people that will reply to this thread before you even think about clicking on the title.

1 - The denier. This is always the first person to respond and is known by the mating call "that's not how it was said in the moving picture" and "nobody says Leia or Han the same way". Ignore potato, tomato, crayon, caramel, mayonnaise and about 50 billion other words used on a daily basis in THIS galaxy that nobody says the same way twice. Typically this is the same person that will be old and grey and refusing to learn about cell phones or the internet.

2 - The educator. This person comes with snarky comments and talks down to EVERYONE. Links to dictionary websites ensue. Never mind that a made up story could have made up names in it. I'm pretty sure neither Korriban or Moraband is in the dictionary either. Because of this, nearly all replies are off topic as they are aimed solely at other forum members instead of the topic . This person is sometimes green.

3 - The culturalist, AKA 'how the English do'. This is where we get worldly, despite having nothing to do with the context. The great culturalist and educator war has raged on since before grumpy cat was a thing. Needless to say, this war takes place where ever the two meet and drags the thread off topic. Every. Time.

4 - The acceptist. FINALLY we get here. Three pages later of the above going back and forth and at last a reply that is both on topic and keeping with the spirit of the OP's original intention.

If it were me, I would have started the post with a source. In this case it would be the Star Wars Radio Drama. A YouTube clip that points directly to either Leia or Captain Antilles saying "tan-ti-vee" would have been helpful to curb at least some of group number 1.

You could even go so far as to point out that the Radio Drama is considered to be absolute canon in the same light as the films themselves, deleted scenes and novelizations of the films.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter what sources you cite or what you think canon is or isn't. Threads like this will always have people who are either stuck in their ways or just flat out refuse to learn new things.

I thought the thread was quite interesting, including tangents, and also friendly. No need to get all personal and judging. If people didn't have that radio source handy then they couldn't start the thread with it, but nothing was stopping somebody including it in a response.

Early chaos dwarfs looked amazing, really evil.

That period of early 90s GW i call the 'red period'. They had just sold out to be a shareholder lead company, they were trying to appeal to younger gamers. Everything was primary colours and called the 'mega volcano turbo cannon' and silly stuff like that rather than 'autocannon' or 'macro cannon'

catastrophically backfired when the pokemon fad meant that the new 'young' player base lef t in droves and the older gamers didnt want stupid looking stuff. You'll see this change back in the late 90s when it goes 'grimdark' again and people dont have blue and yellow camos and red bolters...

I think the rigger is still there, me and my mates tended to go the sugar mill though.

He forgot the fifth type:

The wise guy who starts calling the tantive IV by its ship type (reb blockade runner) rather than its disputable name... :)

Im going all nostalgia here. Can you remember the name of the club next to the rigger, we used to go to the rigger first and then there. I think it might have been something classy like 'ritzys'.

Used to be an awesome vintage clothes store called zero in NuL at one point, i got load of WWII type battledress jackets from there for about £3 each!

The one across the road yeah it was something like ritzy but that closed down ages ago, mind you Newcastle has almost no shops left it's all pubs and clubs now.

Fair play i mean i'm going back to 1991 here. I think I stopped going out with the girl in newcastle (it was on and off really for ages) about 94 when i moved to Yorkshire, then around 96-98 i started going to chicos under the bus station in hanley (makes stoke area sound well glamouous when you say it like that!)

Anyway half one in the morning.... time for bed.

Night all!

One that was always like nails on a chalk board was people axing me a question, never got why ask was so hard to say but living in the area of New York I did it was just part of the local dialect.

It's not localised I'm afraid. We have the same problem here in New Zealand. Bugs the hell out of me too. We use the Queen's English in New Zealand, but sometime's you'd think you were a foreigner in your own country when you hear some of the more ignorant speakers.

I have a 13 year old daughter and when she posts things on facebook, I have a hard time understanding the "teen-speak". I'd have a better chance of understanding Klingon.

The got burnt down by the owner for the insurance money mid 2000s, anyway night.

You're right.

I'm always grumpy in the morning, especially when personal stuff clouds the mind.

Seems appropriate to post this here....
