Pet Peeve: Pronunciation

By DigitalChicanery, in X-Wing

Only if they grew up with some long outdated morality system, the human body is nothing to be ashamed of, has some one been mocking you for the way you look?

It's what's inside that matters champ old age robs us all of our looks, it's who we are and who others perceive us to be that matters, and on that count I'm golden.

Incidentally, it's from an old episode of Animaniacs. You also seemed to have missed my general point...

But then you know when you hear it on a day to day basis it sounds nomal. I imagine you've got two problems when the game goes across the pond.

One the US often pronounce (and spell) things in an intentionally different way. A conscious decision made to unify a new country (and a lot of it makes sense like dropping the 'u' in colour, while some makes no sense like putting a zed instead of an ess in everything and calling it 'zee') but thats by the by,,, the problem is the two countries divided by a common language that is then compounded by GW plagiarising latin, ancient greek and gallic legends that even most people in the UK don't know how to pronounce. Like I said, we have no idea how latin sounded... we guess it was like sing song italian with hard 'c' as a 'k' sound (ceasar/kaisar) but they could well have all sounded Indian for all we know.

Nope just ignored it, your just doing your normal routine here on the forums and I'm not falling for it, keep trying to push my buttons if that's what entertains you though.

My fave 40k thing was that so many people never got the in jokes and historical references.

not so much a joke as direct 'history lift' was the 'expulsion from imperial records' of two chapters.

People have spent years arguing what those chapters were and the truth is they were never anything. Rick put it in as he's an archeologist originally and the Imperial Roman records have two legions 'expunged from imperial records' (probably for rebeliing or losing an eagle) and he thought this was cool, they never ever had names or existed. :)

Joke wise.. well 'Rainbow Warriors' and 'Ultramarines' were very tongue in cheek for a start and *allegedly* the crimson fists red fist concept comes from a US *** rights movements insignia, or so studio legend had it.

I heard he did that (the missing legions) so that players could make their own and tus fit them in the story.

Nope purely a direct lift from Caesars writings and imperial records.

The thing that let you do your own chapter is the 1000 chapters and saying 'we will never name them all'

Incidentally I created the 'Iron Knights' chapter... i'm quite smug about that when I see other people playing them!

Regrettably they don't have quite as much 'flavour' as the original concept i put before Andy Chambers, not his fault, he was long gone (as was I) before the went from a few mentions in codex books to having anything concrete written about them... i dont actually recognise my own chapter these days....

Don't get me started. Pronunciation, especially when attempting to consider root languages, is not most peoples Forte. (See what I did there?)

I do, although as a musician I've only recently become aware that the French pronunciation is considered proper in this context.

The emperor: "Dorn"

Roboute: "what was that father?"

Emperor: "oh nothing, I like to say his name. Dooorn"

Roboute: "why?"

Emperor: "nice wooden sort of name. Doooooorrnnn. It gives me confidence!"

Roboute, how about Fulgrim, father? you gave his legion the right to wear your aquilla."

Emperor: "Fulgrim? ugh no dreadfull tinny sort of name! Fulgrimm, i don't like it!"

Roboute: "...."

Emperor: "Dorn. dooooooornnn"

And another thing, if no one in Star Wars can even consistently pronounce "Han," then let's not worry about the right and wrong way to do it. :)

LA LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU

Trying to educate people is part of my normal routine here, which is far more gratifying than pushing your buttons.

thats pretty good point.. it varies from Han as in ham to harn...

I'm from Belgium (the flemish part, so i speak dutch) And i've always had great fun when GW puts in all the german/european names in warhammer fantay. My absolute fave was Marijke slachtoffer (Mary Victim) from an old WFRP scenario.

One that was always like nails on a chalk board was people axing me a question, never got why ask was so hard to say but living in the area of New York I did it was just part of the local dialect.

The older core of writers were very clever with their names and puns, the new breed less so.

(apart from my mates, they are all brilliant and can do no wrong in case they are reading this)

Axing a question is an odd one.

One of my faves is 'parting shot' which is a misunderstanding of 'parthian shot' but i don't even bother explaining to people anymore, it has just become so imbedded and is now common parlance.

A good friend of mine is a real grammar nazi and hates lots of new words that come up but doesnt understand that language evolves...if it didnt we'd all be writing to each other with posts that looked like snippets from chaucer.

Wow i didn't know that. I'm glad we recently got the Space sharks back as the carcharodon astra. (still called space sharks yay!)

Oh I hear you just fine and fully comprehend what your trying to do, it's just I'm not thin skinned enough for it to matter.

i could never understand Alan's decision to make 'space sharks' into Carchadons as they thought 'space shark' was silly.

erm.... 2nd best selling space marine range is space wolves... hello?

I mean even 'adeptus astartes' is actually latin/greek mish mash gibberish... it just looks more like 'star adepts' than 'adeptus astra'.

Why would marines worship astartes? A greek goddess...

Who came up with naming a lizardman It-zi-bitzi? Ugh that was bad!

Oh did you know that, for the Dutch version of Space crusade the translators refered to "chaos space marines" as "ruimte mariniers van KOSMOS" Even tough the word "chaos" exists in dutch and is even written the same way as in english!

Atleast i can pronounce "space wolves" without twisting my tongue In the HH novels they started to call themselves the Valkia Fenryka" or something. sounds cool, but my thung is numb from saying it once...

Probably Nigel Stilman, he did the early work on lizard men, he was quite erm... 'eccentric' . I could tell you stories but it wouldnt be proffesional :)

Nah hes a great guy, very intelligent. Again another archeologist, most the early writing team had good history or archeology degrees.

A lot of the old named figures (pre catalogue number days) was purely so the mail order guys could remember which ones were which. It is why they usually had silly pun names or descriptive names.

Top fact... the first run of Space Marine models were all named after the cast of the Batman Tv series (west, ward, romero)

All the Imperial Guard were named after prog rock musicians (emerson, lake, palmer)

Anyway its late, i'm talking too much 40k. Time for bed...

got some xwing games to win tomorrow!

Urgh Dan abnett has alot to answer for, it's too late at night to rant about him and his terrible books though.

Win some for me! :)

Say, between 40k and star wars... Do you ever get your emperors mixed up?

Oh pish, like any of the other 40K authors are better. Though it's pretty much established that HH-era material is awful regardless of author.

hey you didnt have to edit the buggers....

Me: "dan this bit with the 'bolt action auto rifles' you do know that makes no sense... its either bolt action or its automatic?'

Dan: 'It sounds cool though

And Necropolis was originally called 'vervunhive' we had to force the new title on him that time....

Nice bloke though tbh

anyway...bed!

Tantive (as in Tantive IV) is pronounced Tan-tiv-vee .

It's taken from "Tantivy".

adverb

1. at full gallop:

"to ride tantivy".

adjective

2. swift; rapid.

noun, plural tantivies.

3. a gallop; rush.

interjection

4.

(used as a hunting cry when the chase is at full speed.)

I guess I'm guilty, I leave off the long eee at the end.
