Miralan inbalanced?

By Azanael, in General Discussion

Hi,

why have the Miralans only one special ability? all others get two. Or is it so, because they get Dex 3 at character creation?
What about "They get one additional advantage on survival rolls (due to the harsh environment on their planet)

Base 11 Wounds to start.

They also have a higher starting WT, and their special ability is one that applies in a good number of regular situations (using the force, recovering strain, fear checks)

yeah, but the twi lek also have 11 wound and 11 strain + two secial abilities (and deception comes in play also often), but the point with discipline could it be. Maybe. But a small special ability would be nice for them I think.

My Twi'leks have 10+ WT

My Twi'leks have 10+ WT

ok, you´re right ^^

I think they're too similar to Sullustans. Both have 2-3-2-1-2-2. I think the Mirialans could be at 2-2-2-1-3-2 instead.

This would be a unique profile, and the Mirialans never struck me as having dexterity on the level of Rodians or Sullustans.

Then maybe swap Discipline for Coordination and one rank of the Conditioned talent, reflecting a slightly higher overall athleticism.

I don't think the Mirialans are imbalanced, just very strongly keyed towards being Force users because of that free rank in Discipline.

As for lack of other special abilities, they've got a Wound Threshold of 11+Brawn, and Brawn isn't their weak Characteristic (unlike the Twi'leks), so that makes them a bit more resilient than many other species.

The Agility hike was a little weird, but I guess if you take Bariss Offee and Luminara Unduli as examples of their species, both ladies are fairly nimble, I don't think Willpower is a good choice for their strong Characteristic, especially if Discipline is retained.

While Discipline is a strong skill to get a free rank in, and starting with a higher threshold is pretty nice, I'd really prefer for every race to have at least one unique feature, even if it's a minor one. The ones that are just a characteristic/threshold adjustment with a free skill rank feel kind of bland.

Don't forget Hylo Visz, a famous smuggler of the Old Republic. Smugglers have to be a bit quicker than the rest.

PHOOEY!! I thought you found me something awesome!

Twi'leks briefly had 11+ WT during the EotE Beta, but that got revoked when the EotE core rulebook came out.

I came to the conclusion that most species has 25-30 XP to buy special features. In the case of the Mirialan:

• Abilitie 3: 30 XP (2 ->3)

• Abilitie 1: -20 XP (2 ->1)

• 1 Skill bonus: 10 XP

• +1 Wound: 5 XP

+1 Wound would actually be 2.5 XP, since Toughened grants 2 for 5 XP in a lot of trees. +1 Strain would be 5 XP by that logic.

And you may be right, but I still think every species should have some unique ability , even if it's very minor, like auto-generating an Advantage on a certain skill check.

I've been play testing a Mirialan since Gen Con. I can't say that I've noticed any imbalance downward. Their speed, fortitude and Discipline makes them excellent Jedi-like characters. My character certainly hasn't fallen behind any of the other species.

That being said, that is only one persons experience. The true test can only come from a consensus of play testers.

So per the Beta Update #2, Mirialans now gain a free skill rank in both Discipline and Cool.

So for those folks thinking they were fairly weak, this should probably make them seem less so.

Yes, the Update for the mirialans is pretty good... better than I expected.

Compare the Mirialan to the Gand:

Attributes come from the same pool: 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, but the Gand start with 3 Willpower, whereas the Mirialan start with 3 Agility.

Both have a free rank of Discipline.

The Gand have either 110 XP but require a breath Mask for oxygenated environments, or 100 XP but do not need to breathe.

The Mirialan has +1 WT and 100 XP.

Therefore take the lungless Gand and compare with the Mirialan, and it comes down to 1 WT vs. not needing to breathe.

Although, if I had to make a Force User from one of these two species it would be the Gand, because if you're going to go Discipline heavy at creation you might as well take Willpower.

Edit: Sorry for being late to the party. I hadn't seen the update ...

So, aren't Mirialans now better than humans? (+1 WT better, that is)

Not really, as their two bonus skill ranks are locked in to two specific skills, where Humans have the freedom to chose any two non-career skills, giving the Humans a leg up on being diverse in their skill set or picking up skills that work for their concept but aren't available for their starting career/specialization.

And let's not forget that humans start with a higher starting XP than any non-droid as well (at least I'm pretty sure). Humans are still the most versitile potentially force-sensitive race.
