Debris Clouds and defending

By zhentil, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Okay for debris clouds we have:

1. They are obstacles.

2. When we moved through or on we get a stress token

3. We have to roll a red die and only get hurt it it's a critical.

4. We can shoot through them even if we are on them

My questions are this:

1. With Dash Rendar ship we ignore obstacles during the activation phase and when performing actions. So we basically can fly through them without damage as well as asteroids

2. Now if we play the park on debris clouds game. When someone shoots at us while we are parked on it does Dash get that extra die for defense?

Debris is treated in the same manner as asteroids except for the points mentioned above. So if the edge of the range ruler between the closest points of the two ships overlaps an obstacle/debris token, the attack is considered obstructed. Because of this obstruction, the defender rolls one additional defense die during the “Roll Defense Dice” step of this attack.

Okay, so you really just need to fly carefully

Obstacles can be damaging to anyone except Dash, but they can obstruct everyone including Dash. This is another case of read the card carefully. Some folks tend to read it and assume he's immune to ALL the effects of obstacles, when really he just gets to fly over and onto them for no penalty. There's nothing on the card about the Combat Phase, so he's still required to conform to the combat rules for obstacles.

Unless of cause Dash is manning the guns of another ship.

True, but the question was about Dash, the pilot. And fortunately we can't have him piloting his ship AND manning the guns. That would just get too silly. :)

I cast my thread-o-mancy skills to the wind.. hahahah

I had this come up tonight, and we read, reread.. and discussed.. this concept of Dash doing his thing on the debris clouds.

SO if I read this right here, he won't take the stress or the damage roll when flying over the clouds??

I just want to make sure we did it right, I know that you can shoot off of them, but would he lose his actions on, or flying over one??

No, he would not lose his actions. Read his pilot ability. It's ignore all obstacles during the activation phase and when performing actions. It's as if the obstacle is not there. The only time it ever affects pilot dash is during combat.

OK. thanks.. yeah, new stuff always takes time to get used too.. lol..

So then in the combat phase he acts like everyone else.. Can't shoot when on top of an Asteroid.. ?

Can't shoot when on top of an Asteroid.. ?

Correct. Sitting on an asteroid during Combat will affect him, but that's about it. Debris clouds are basically just open space as far as he's concerned.

ok.. thanks.. just what I needed.. lol.. a little head slap readjustment..

Feel free to order up a "head slap readjustment" anytime.

Too bad debris clouds are still "competitive format illegal". The rules for obstacle placement in competitive format needs an update.

Now I know not everyone has debris cloud tokens as not everyone has a wave 5 ship. But everyone does have the core set which came with satellite obstacle tokens so here is my question.

Why not just use satellite tokens and treat them as debris clouds?

(edit: maybe this should be int its own thread)

Aren't the satellite tokens you are talking about very small? Like way smaller than the smallest asteroids.

They are, but unlike debris clouds everyone who has a core set has satellite tokens. Not everyone has debris cloud tokens.

Sure the size will have an effect. But landing on debris clouds has the same effect as flying through them unlike asteroids where landing on an asteroid is worse then flying through. So IMHO the impact the small size of the satellite token is less when treating it as a debris cloud than when treating the satellite as any other obstacle.

Still debris clouds are not allowed in competitive format and neither are satellite tokens even if you treat them as regular obstacles like the asteroids. Only if FFG does a competitive format update that allows them to be placed. Until then only take asteroids and place the debris clouds with the satellite and Senator's Shuttle tokens.
