Coded Messages, Darke's Blessing, Rare Book Collection, Velma's Gratitude

By MrsGamura, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

So has any one every gotten one of these cards to flip? Me never... well ok I lie but it was the last encounter before the AO was going awaken so didn't want to waste the Point to turn over Coded Messages.

  1. Coded Messages ~1 gate trophy, 1 monster trophy, 1 clue token
  2. Darke's Blessing ~discard a blessing
  3. Rare Book Collection ~ discard Necronomicon
  4. Velma's Gratitude ~ Fight > 3, draw a injury

Darke's Blessing looks like the most useful one to have turned up and Rare Book collection that hardest one to turn up.

On the other hand Velma's is the un-useful one and the easiest to turn up.

Dark's would be the easiest to encounter depending on how many expansions you're playing.

I had one game where it was my personal mission to get Darke's Blessing. I played Darell, got Blessed, headed to Darke's, lost the blessing, got blessed, went to Darkes, didn't get the encounter for 2-3 turns, and then got it.

It was useful for the rest of the game, saved an investigator from a bad situation 2-3 times. I was bummed that it took so long to get, but I think that was mostly bad luck on my part. We ended up losing that game though....

Darke's Blessing is the easiest to get, if you play with other expansions (no encoutner dillution). Velma's is frequented so little that it's totally not worth it. Rare Book collection is a monumental sacrifice of a very specific very good item in exchange for a location ability that is "meh".. Rare Book is the worst of them, IMO.

We've turned up coded messages a few times, sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesnt. It's cool, but the price is very high. Never seem to have the goods..

I've gotten them all but only because we set out to do it as part of a home grown scenario. As part of a normal game we've only gotten Darke's once and coded messages once each. Darke's proved useful but I don't remember being especially impressed with coded messages, though it sounds good on paper. Absolutely no one is willing to take an injury for Velma nor give up the Necronomicon for the library. I've often wondered what was on the mind of the creator when he made those last two? Just some more thematism?

Finally got changed in our last game by accident. Sent to the high house with enough bloods to do it. Then we realized that it still takes clue tokens to seal the gate before placing the unbreakable seal. At least that's the way we read it.

I got Coded Messages once, and it ended up being the coolest thing since sliced elder signs. We had three people at base gathering clues as others went and sealed gates, and by the time they got out we had enough to just meet back up in the streets and clue them both. After it flipped we went from 2 sealed to six in a very short amount of time.

I've never got the others. Dark's blessing sounds awesome.

I've gotten all of them except for Rare Book Collection. As observed earlier, Velma's Gratitude wasn't worth it. Darke's Blessing was; it's the next best thing to having Mandy on your team. Coded Messages we've activated two or three times, and it is EXTREMELY helpful!

Let's see... My group got Coded Messages once. Very useful.

We got Darke's Blessing twice. Mostly thanks to me.

One game as we were setting up, I casually mentioned that if I got Sister Mary I was heading to Dunwich to get Darke's Blessing.

Well, somehow fate seemed to smile on me and randomly select me Sister Mary, so I headed up to Dunwich (after finding some money of course).

As soon as I got there, I had one encounter (and didn't get Darke's Blessing) and we drew the rumor to discard spells or something... so I had to head back. No Darke's Blessing that time.

However, two other times, I've had random investigators with Blessings while I was in Dunwich, and I stopped by on the off chance of finding it, and luck was with me both times. The second time was after finishing that horrible Kingsport rumor that gives you a blessing and a retainer.

It's definitely worth it, but maybe not if you TRY to get it.

I never got any of them. I can never remember what is required to get them, so even if I'm lucky and draw the correct encounter, I've never been able to fulfill the conditions.
