I gotta say, I was getting really nervous by the fourth picture, with the sliced&diced E-Wing. But the final product looks really great! The modeling and painting on the final product is really quite good.
Fixing the E-Wing (Aesthetic Conversion) and some Phantoms -
I am incredibly displeased with the lack of gun above the cockpit.
Didn't even move it back like the never-will-be-released fate of the galaxy one.
C'mon man it's not much f*ckin' dumber than Y-Wing gun placement.
Well, ymmv on whether you like the gun on the cockpit or not, it is an iconic part of the original design for better or worse depending on how you feel. That cockpit gun is glued on and pops off pretty easily, so, if you wanted to make the same modifications but leave the gun on top it is more than feasible!
For me, I find it is indeed 'dumber' than the Y-wing for several reasons... first, the y-wing being a turret, not a fixed gun, second is the y-wing turret does not encroach on the field of view of the crew, and can fire everywhere they can see. For the e-wing, that top cannon would cut off such a massive amount of the pilots field of view with no tangible benefit to where it is placed that it just makes no sense to me... if the gun was moved under the nose or wings, there would be no difference to shooting and results of shooting, but there would be a massive difference to visibility right? This is the reason it bugs me so much, I can't seperate the form from function personally. But as I said, absolutely no harm or reason you can't prefer the canopy gun either, it is after all a make-believe ship designed for fun above everything. Hope my reasoning as to why the Y is ok vs the E makes a bit of sense though!
Guys, thanks very much for looking and the comments, and cool to see the e-bird too lol!
I still want to cast a phantom in clear resin, and swap it out instead of using the cloak token...

I totally wanted to as well, but, the cloaked version of the phantom is for all intents and purposes invisible, for real, on the my starmat... I should have taken a pic of that, but it's pretty nuts, from a few feet away all you can see is the stand, even up close it is hard to make out... the effect was really effective in the proper setting, very cool... I have 2 interceptors painted in a black scheme meant to represent soontir with stealth, and though the blend in pretty well, it is nowhere near as effective as the true cloak paintscheme which is also pretty cool!
What I want to know is why you guys find penises in literally everything.
The e-wing, x-wing, x-95.... cmon if you look at them without familiarity, for the first time with no nostalgia or commitment attached... cmon.... a little phalic with the shaft and head lol. I didn't really notice it until my wife walked by one day and asked 'why do they all look like dicks with wings attached?' LOL!
The e-wing in particular, just the unbroken straight line from front to back really just seemed boring and un-sleek to me... made it look older than a z-95 to my eye. It also had the most pronounced 'head to shaft' aspect lol.
I don't care at all about the x-wing or z-95's *****-like aspects, because overall I find the designs balanced and cohesive enough, with nice sillouettes and curves. Thought I think I will be modifying the z-95's to be less x-wing like on the nose, adding fins like in some older art, possibly trying to get single large intakes instead of the x-wing style quad intakes... this isn't because I have that big a problem with the z-95s as-is, but it would add some nice subtle variety in I think... that and a non-x-wing'ish lick of paint will help!
Edited by MajorTom11So does that make the r2 unit the...ohhhhh.
The R2 is embedded in the main hull internally... so I think that makes it a kidney stone lol!

Seriously how many penises have you actually seen.
Well that suddenly took a turn for the awkward... you seem awfully interested but maybe this isn't quite the right venue for this depth of fascination? I am sure there are other forums out there more interested in a protracted conversation on the topic lol...

It's just getting really old watching everyone say "This looks like a ***** because it is long!"
There's a lot of long things in the world.
Beautiful. I'll take two e-wings, please
@cpt lackwit, fair enough... as you can see, I am pretty new to posting here, I didn't realize I was rolling on a stale meme... it was a new thought to me at the time lol... that being said, I am sure you can appreciate (on multiple levels) that I would want to let that particular comparisson die off a bit and keep the thread on topic at this point, but I do thank you for letting me know about that (no sarcasm).
@Geoffy, thanks! I wish I could churn em out but it takes too **** long lol...
Awesome job! I'll take 2 Ewings and a Star repainted Phantom. Do you take PayPal?
Can you elaborate on how you dissected the model so cleanly? Ive wanted to move the cannon on mine back some but have no idea how to do it.
Great work by both the modelers in this thread as well. Looking great.
Hey Draco,
Step by step roughtly -
-
Re-shaped nose via shaving with an exacto and then sanding,
-
Removed the dorsal cannon by prying and wiggling with model clippers. of the 3, 2 popped out fairly easily (they are glued in bits, the 'sunroof' area you see extending the cockpit is the slot the dorsal cannon was glued into. The third was just clipped out)
-
Remove wings with clippers, one clip from behind, one from front. Sand the edges smooth on both the body and wings.
-
shaved the rear of the body to a slope with an exacto then sanded, dug in a recess on top rear with an exacto, which was probably the trickiest bit
-
Pry off the engines, again using clippers to loosen and pry, and if necessary, clip a bit here and there. Just a little patience on those.
-
Shaped the wings, both outer and inner plates, outer shape with model clippers, top inner wing plate with exacto (score the shape, dig under it with the blade by wiggling it under the edge, go back and forth and work the plate off with blade flush the whole time, will end up with a pretty smooth surface).
-
GS the bumpout sections that widen the body and give the intake looking area and extra engines their place to live, and also make the main body not just one long shaft. Use exacto and sanding to smooth and get sharp edges on of the rough gs blob. Cut out rectangular recesses.
-
Mounted the wings more horizontally and added a strut to the wing with plasticard. Various details were added with plastirod and card to fill spaces and add detail in addition to just the strut. Wing is moved back from original position thanks to extended gs fuselage, a few mm but it makes a difference.
-
Added plasti-rod enhanment to the intake area to beef it out and add more relief to the model
-
Added extra, smaller guns on each wing with brass rod and plastirod-
-
Remount engines moved back 3mm or so so that the longer portion of the engine sticks out behind the wing, not in front.
-
Fill in the holes in the sunroof with gs
- Paint!
If all you want to do is move back the dorsal cannon, that is super duper easy, just gently pry it off, or clip it, either way, totally easy to move it. Hope that helps!
Very nice conversions work and painting!
