Not used right...

By Spaceman91, in X-Wing

Hello again

The last time my friend and I had a game something was said that has been ringing round my head since. It was this " I like the B-wing but no one uses it the way its meant to be used" he was talking fluff wise of course but he has a point.

The Y-wing and the B-wing are both " fluff wise " torpedo boats/bombers/ heavy fighters.

I understand of course that missiles and torpedos can be over priced for what they bring but a few times I have come close to loosing because they hurt when they hit. So I ask could a Y-wing kitted out to be a torpedo bomber work:

Grey Squadron pilot

Proton torpedo

Flechette torpedo

R2 astro ( to make up for the dials flaws )

Munitions failsafe

Could a B-wing work the same:

Dagger Squadron pilot

Proton torpedo

Flechette torpedo

Munitions failsafe

So do you think if you build to fire missiles would it be effective?

Something I want to try but no clue when it can happen:

2x

Dagger Squadron pilot

Proton torpedo

Munitions failsafe

2x

Rookies

Bang on 100pts

They definitely can work, it just sometimes leaves things up to the fate of the dice which makes them less reliable in the long run. 4-5 points for a torpedo that requires setup to get the shot and can still can miss or just do one damage is a risky investment

You can actually win with quite a lot of things in X-Wing, but when you consider consistency (like in a tournament setting where winning multiple games is a row is mandatory to advance) they are less reliable and/or inefficient.

HLC does it better.

The two reasons you don't see much ordnance are that it is often a bit over priced for a one shot item and secondly they often require too much setup time. The Munitions Failsafe can help with the one-shot being all hit or miss but using that adds to the cost.

With the B-Wing specifically I'll say you never see torpedoes on it is simply because it has that cannon slot and it's primary weapon is pretty good when factoring in the TL most ordnance requires. With the Y-Wing ordnance requires lining up the shot which not be the easiest to do and the price becomes prohibitive.

HLC does it better.

I think that's what the problem is. There are upgrades to add to B-wings that are better investments

I do like the survivability of the B Wing to carry ordnance, though.

They usually possess enough hit points to get two sets of secondaries off before they bite it. Just something else to consider.

the Y-Wing pilot Horton if you look at his ability it was made for Proton Torpedoes since it only works at rang 2-3 which is the range for torpedoes.

Rebel Aces is having a B-wing that ignores firing arcs when launching torpedoes. It is doing some crazy Babalyon 5 loop fighting stuff.

"lore" wise. Bombers should be used to take down sector of large ships. How a Y-Wing caring torpedoes would fare against a Tantive IV, for instance? (i know, allied crafts but .. its an example, people!)
