Decloaking and Picking a Side

By CorpCommander, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I have seen in videos of TIE Phantoms with Echo having 10 choices of direction to de-cloak into. The only mention of picking a side I could find was in the FAQ on Echo.

It is not on the Decloak reference card, Echo's pilot card or on the Cloak Action reference card.

So, since I just got this ship, now I'm confused. Can the other ships use the 2 straight template and decloak in 4 directions (+2 barrel roll) or do they simply de-cloak 2 straight ahead only?

Where is the discussion that lead to the Echo FAQ entry? Searching didn't find it and I was hoping to get my answers there.

Thanks!

I'm only counting 6 directions for Echo to decloak (forward-right, forward-left, right-forward, right-backward, left-forward, left-backward). In contrast, non-Echo Phantoms have 3 directions they can decloak (forward, right, and left).

Normal Phantoms have 3 choices when they decloak: an Ahead maneuver, or a barrel roll to either side, all using the 2 template.

Echo combines an extra direction, so you end up with the 6 possibilities dbmeboy mentions, depending on how you lay the bank template.

OK, but where is that information. It makes sense, but I just want to see where it is officially. I feel like I have no clue where to find that information.

I guess Echo cannot barrel roll?

And no phantom can de-cloak to the rear?

I guess now that I look at the Decloak reference card it mentions the 3 options for a normal Phantom, and for Echo, the replacement of the 2 forward with the curved 2 with direction changes is interesting. The barrel roll is still performed the same way with Echo, right? Side to side? But with a slight change of facing?

I guess it was there. I am far more visual than verbal. A diagram would have been a nice option!

Read it again? It's definitely there. Decloak is normally either a barrel roll, performed using the 2 forward template, or a 2 forward boost. Echo must use the 2 bank template instead. The FAQ clarifies that in addition to saying "I'm decloaking by barrel rolling to the right", you also have to declare which way the template will be curved if the decloaking ship in question is Echo. It's to prevent someone saying "I'm going to decloak" then try placing the template every which way to figure out which is the most advantageous.

As for a diagram, here's Echo. While any other Phantom behaves exactly as the Decloak card describes; a 2 barrel roll or a 2 forward.

It's really quite simple. All the Phantom pilots, except Echo use the straight-2 template, and Echo uses the bank-2 template ONLY. Echo doesn't get the straight-2 at all.

And as Otacon pointed out, when Echo decloaks, you must state which of the six directions you are taking before checking with the template. With the other Phantom pilots, you only have three directions to choose from.
