Unofficial X-Wing Galactic Campaign - Season 2 starts now

By DagobahDave, in X-Wing

SYSTEM: Agamar

WINNER: Rebels

DATE: 2014-11-24

REBELS: Chris (me)

Jek Porkins (X-wing) + R5-D8 + Veteran Instincts (30 pts)

Gold Squadron Pilot (BTL-A4 Y-wing) + R2 Astromech + Blaster Turret + Engine Upgrade (27 pts)

2x Rookie Pilots (X-wing) (21 pts ea.)

IMPERIALS: J-Man

Soontir Fel (TIE/IN)

Howlrunner (TIE/Ln) + Squad Leader

Kir Kanos (TIE/IN) + Targeting Computer

Storm Squadron Pilot (TIE Advanced) + Proton Rockets + Munitions Failsafe

Lieutenant Jek Porkins (known as "Piggy" among his squadron mates) was charged with leading a group of rookies from Red and Gold squadrons on a training run, an easy mission, to a remote part of the Agamar system, known to be used as a proving ground for their counterparts in the Imperial Navy. Instead of a bunch of cadets flying worn out TIE fighters, they encountered a small collection of ships (most of which they had never encountered before) piloted by some of the Empire's best and most experienced pilots.

Porkins formed up his 4 ships in a diamond formation, with the Y-wing on point (where it could absorb- and hopefully- survive the enemy's initial volleys) and himself in the trailing, #4 slot, where he could best observe and protect his inexperienced charges. Their enemy, meanwhile had split into two groups: two TIEs (one with bent wings, like a single-body TIE bomber) came at them frontally, while the second (two smaller ships, also with bent wings...) attempted to flank. The Rebels accelerated and closed with the first group, hoping to destroy (or at least inflict serious damage) before the flankers could get involved.

In closing, Howlrunner found herself square in the sights of the BTL-A4 Y-wing and two X-wings, without benefit of the TIE Advance's shields. She rolled right, out of their line of fire... And right into the sights of Rookie #1, who "one-shotted" her! But not before she put some damage on Porkins' X-wing. Meanwhile, the Storm Squadron pilot stripped the shields off Rookie #2, with a combination of lasers and proton rockets.

The Rebels and the TIE Advanced all K-turned and prepared for a second pass, as the flanking Interceptors turned to bring their weapons to bear. Porkins fired at the TIE Advanced but missed (just a part of a string of bad luck, like damaging his own ship with the K-turn and R5-D8 failing to repair the damage and...). Kir Kanos, DID NOT miss, and destroyed the Rebel flight leader (Porkins). Rookie #2 claimed the TIE Advanced in revenge.

Pass three, saw Baron Fel's TIE Interceptor succumbing to the concentrated laser and blaster fire of the Gold squadron BTL-A4 Y-wing and Kir Kanos suffering heavy damage from Rookie #1.

Pass #4... did not happen, as Kanos, using the superior speed and maneuverability of his Interceptor to good use, by evading the Rebels and saving his ship (and his own life).

Game over... Rebel victory (though a sad one, at the loss of Porkins).

Bombers Aboard Inflexible Fight to Return Law and Order to the Belsmuth sector

BOTAJEF - Doing their part to rid the galaxy of terrorism and crime, TIE Bombers from the TIE Fighter wing aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible destroyed two rebel smugglers in a recent skirmish on the Outer Rim. In the debris of the destroyed Correllian freighters, Imperial spacetroopers found contraband destined for Brentaal.

The crossroutes of the Hydian Way and the Salin Corridor have been a corridor for illicit spice, human slaves, illegal weaponry and rebel propaganda since the eruption of insurrection in the nearby Quellii Sector. Imperial forces, including those deployed from the naval academy at Prefsbelt have been hard pressed to stifle the trafficking in these deviant goods and services.

ISB analyst Prop Agandist explained the situation as the confluence of contraband and terrorism. "For a terrorist group like the Rebellion to support itself it deals with the tremendous profits to be had from spice, human slaves, weaponry and alien pornography. What may have begun as a political quest, no matter how misguided, is always eventually captured by the sources of its revenue. It has been that way all throughout history, and the Rebellion is no exception. Why else do you think we see this current crisis in the Quellii and Belsmuth sectors? It's because it's along these trade routes in the Outer Rim."

Thankfully, there are flights of bombers, like those aboard the Inflexible to fight towards ending this erosive corruption on which the Rebellion sustains itself, and even becomes the rhetoric to justify the trafficking in depraved material.

"It's not just destroying rebel forces," Maj. Purvis told HNN reporters. "It's stifling the flow of these goods from the lawless Outer Rim to civilized places in the Core, where they will hit the streets and corrupt our children; or - worse - find aliens kidnapping those children to serve as the playthings of Hutts."

"It's all economics," Agent Agandist said. "In order to maintain a trade balance, the spice, alien porn, and blasters going into the Core has to be balanced by something coming out of the Core. In the legal economy, the Core exports advanced technology and superior culture in trade for raw materials and alien labor. However, in the 'fringe' economy the criminal sector has no such use for wholesome goods. They require humans to do their bidding, and - unfortunately - they really have a 'taste' for children. I hate to shock you, but aliens have a variety of different 'tastes'. Some even literal."

Shocking indeed, readers, watchers, and listeners. Shocking indeed. Thankfully, the Star Destroyer Inflexible and its stalwart pilots are between us and this alien corruption and insurrection.

Inflexible Uncovers Further Evidence of Rebel Collusion With Smuggling

BOTAJEF - During further smuggling interdiction missions along the Hydian Way and the Salin Corridor, Imperial units discovered incontrovertible evidence of Rebel collusion with smugglers of vile contraband. While assigned to inspect the cargo holds of light freighters - vessels ideal for smuggling - customs shuttles discovered rebel fighters of the A-Wing type flying escort for the contraband-carrying freighters.

The rebel A-Wing is a new type of fighter built exclusively for the so-called Rebel Alliance. Produced by the criminal manufacturer Incom, the A-Wing is a weak attempt to counter the Imperial TIE Interceptor. In these encounters, however, these A-Wings were countered by standard TIE Fighters and TIE Bombers flying escort for the customs shuttles.

"It just goes to show how even supposedly advanced craft like this A-Wing are not a match for the Imperial doctrine that we teach our pilots here aboard the Inflexible," Maj. Purvis, Wing Commander aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible. The Inflexible is attached to the naval academy on Prefsbelt, but is temporarily assigned to the Belsmuth sector, in order to both police the trade routes as well as give its pilots valuable active-duty combat training.

"Beyond Imperial doctrine, it's also what we're fighting for," Maj. Purvis added. "While they're really just fighting to line their pockets with credits earned by dealing in contraband such as spice, weapons, and human trafficking, we're here to bring order and stability to the galaxy, and keep the good folks back home safe from corruption and insurrection here on the Outer Rim."

"That gives our pilots a reason to fight, and that morale pays off," Maj. Purvis added.

Rebellion Puts Up Stiffer Resistance: Resistance Futile

BOTAJEF - During a skirmish with advanced rebel fighter craft recently along the Hydian Way, upperclassmen from the training academy aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible emerged victorious after a long- and hard-fought battle.

Six TIE Fighter pilots from the Inflexible encountered five advanced fighter craft during a routine patrol along the embattled space lane yesterday, leaving four dead and five rebel terrorists disposed of. The rebel craft were three of the light A-wing type, frequently used for reconnaissance and interception, and two of the heavy B-Wing type, designed for the bombardment of peaceful civilian space liners.

According to official reports, as well as the tale told by the surviving pilots in the ship's mess, the TIE pilots scored an early kill of one of the B-wings, but also suffered early casualties of the flight leader and her wingman. Before long, two more TIE pilots were tragically lost. Putting aside the despair that would have stymied an average person, the remaining TIE pilots expertly outmaneuvered the remaining rebels, first shooting down the other B-wing, and then going for the A-wings.

"It's a matter of discipline and pro-active defensive strategy," the fighter wing's commander, Major Purvis told HNN reporters embedded aboard the Inflexible. "Those B-wings are a menace to peaceful civilian traffic, whereas the A-wings are merely a military threat. In the Imperial Navy, we have a doctrine of protecting human civilian life before all else. That's why we have to go after those B-wings. It's as simple as that."

That's the news from the front lines: the rebellion continues to target civilian traffic in the galaxy's space lanes, while our front line of defense - the humble TIE pilots serving aboard the vessels of the Imperial Navy - takes it on the chin to keep us all safe.

This sounds pretty cool. I've been in some online campaigns like this for other game systems. I'll post it to my local X-wing group to see if I can get anyone on board. I won't be able to play until after Xmas.

Do we need to register or anything? Or just start reporting battles?

Do we need to register or anything? Or just start reporting battles?

Just start reporting battles.

But check out DagobahDave's website (here), and he also has a place on Facebook (link).

I tend to post the report here, and then let him know on FB that I've posted it. That way I can share the narrative with the community.

It makes it easier on him if you adhere to the style of reporting, which you can find guidelines for on the site.

Inflexible Continues to Clear the Hydian Way

JUNCTION - Imperial TIE Fighter and Bomber units operating from the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible destroyed two elements of rebellion partisans today, in its continued campaign to rid the Hydian Way of rebel influence and contraband smuggling.

For months, the Inflexible has been patrolling the galaxy's longest trade route in the Thesme, Belsmuth and Meerian Sectors. She has been tasked with the mission to make the Hydian Way free for legal commerce and impossible for illicit trading. A month ago it was confirmed that Botajef - the major trade hub of the Belsmuth Sector - had been returned to law and order. Now the Inflexible has moved on to Bandomeer, the main trading hub of the Meerian Sector. It also quickly redeployed to Junction, where the system is in danger of falling into Rebel hands.

"We have reasonable confidence that Bandomeer is now back in the grasp of the Imperial Navy, and we have stamped the lawlessness and insurrection from that Sector," Maj Purvis, the wing commander aboard the Inflexible told HNN reported embedded aboard the Naval Academy's finishing school for TIE pilots. "Taris and Botajef were secured last month. Now our sights are on defeating them at Junction."

Junction, in the Thesme Sector, lies at the crossroutes of the Hydian and the Junction-Terriel Loop into the Gordian Reach Sector. Asked about the strategic significance, Purvis explained that with Bandomeer secured, once Junction is also closed off to the rebels, the Gordian Reach will be all but cut off, and Terriel - regrettably occupied by the Rebellion - could eventually be blockaded.

Asked about the difficulties of these skirmishes, Purvis proudly reported that the rebels had been routed. The most recent of these even marked the graduation of four Academy Pilots as they were observed by their commanding officer from aboard a VT-49 Decimator.

"They performed excellently well," Purvis said. "They were able to expertly finish off three B-wing-type heavy fighters with hardly a scratch on any of them."

"Of course, I had to place myself in the crosshairs of danger," Purvis admitted, "but that's what an officer of the fleet does in the service of his Emperor and the loyal citizens of the galaxy."

is there a place to find the more complicated rules?

why is the addition of scum going to be an issue? they don't seem like they would be conquering a galaxy so couldn't you still just leave them out of it?

is there a place to find the more complicated rules?

The rules for this season are a little simpler (I think), so you should find the lot of them right there on Dave's page.

why is the addition of scum going to be an issue? they don't seem like they would be conquering a galaxy so couldn't you still just leave them out of it?

Because they're not out yet, there's no point in including Scum in this season of the campaign. Now, Dave did have 'Black Sun' as a faction in the previous season, but he was doing that season with less direct correlation between what was actually on the table vs. what was reported. This season he's a bit more thorough about that, and as a result mirror matches are not being reported.

Long story short, I'm sure that we'll see Scum & Villainy return to the game once the season is over, and the Scum expansions have been released.

Regarding the viability of Scum as a real faction, I think that they should be taken seriously. It's not so much that they're conquering areas as that they're disrupting law and order on the systems from which the forces of the Empire and the Rebellion have been driven.

I saw the current ones just wondering about the previous rules liked the achievements idea and wasn't sure how to get them.

Inflexible Arrives in Junction System

JUNCTION - After a delayed period in hyperspace, the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible arrived in the Junction system along the Hydian Way. A scout vessel, accompanying a civilian volunteer, escorted by a single TIE fighter encountered light rebel resistance.

"En route we encountered unexpected resistance," Maj. Purvis, the Inflexible's wing commander informed embedded HNN reporters. "We had to scour the hyperlane parsec by parsec, making sure that no contraband or terrorist activity was getting by us."

Purvis was confident that his aspect of the mission was complete, but was awaiting orders from Sector Group command on how to proceed.

Inflexible Suppresses Rebellion in Junction

JUNCTION - After arriving earlier in the month, the Imperial Star Destroyer offers its student pilots hands-on flight training in crushing the upstart rebellion that has threatened to destabilize the Thesme sector, the way it has done in the now lawless Weneen sector, where the rebels have taken G'Wenee and Halmad systems. Thankfully, these pilots are proving their mettle against the terrorist elements that seek to bring down the galaxy's lawful New Order.

"Our pilots are doing well out there," Major Purvis proudly told the HNN reporters embedded aboard the Inflexible.

"They had a bit of a rough time against a friendly exercise involving their drill instructors aboard a V-49 Decimator," he admitted, "but when faced with the true enemies of the Emperor's people they pulled through."

Purvis referred to two skirmishes that took place against rebel fighters of the X-Wing and B-Wing variety, as well as some older Y-Wing fighter-bombers flying escort for a light freighter. The freighter was reported to have been carrying contraband purposed for the streets of Brentaal, closer coreward along the Hydian Way.

"Our pilots are best when they keep to Imperial fighter doctrine," Purvis continued. "During the training skirmish, they scattered all over the place, unnerved by the prospect of a Proton Bomb and their drill instructor's reputation for ruthlessness. Well, they didn't escape that ruthlessness out there in the black, so they shouldn't have tried. After the drill instructor instilled the proper discipline in them they shaped up and learned to stick to formation flying."

"That's what saved them - and the New Order - when they faced the real thing."

When asked about recent reports of a rebel return to Bandomeer, a system the Inflexible had left in a state of order the previous month, Purvis shook his head.

"That one weighs upon me, it really does. I thought we had that one sewn up. We were too eager to tamp down on the uprising that was happening here, that we may have left too soon. Still, it was clear that we were needed here, and so here we are. When we're needed, the Navy's there."
