Unofficial X-Wing Galactic Campaign - Season 2 starts now

Cool!
Now, is there a reason that you're limiting this to 100pnt dogfights?
Because rules.
This short campaign is a celebration of the standard format of the game as we have known it before everything goes all pear-shaped. There are no bonus points for larger games, no mirror matches allowed, and no special mission rewards.

Meh.
I was hoping you and I might have another epic battle with the huge ships at some point, worth >1 victory points.
Now, what do you mean by going pear-shaped? I think I like the sound of pears. Is it just the addition of the authentic 3rd faction?
I think we're going to see more three-player battles when the third faction comes out, although it's always been possible. I think it'll just be more tempting. So I'll want to set up the next campaign to be able to handle that sort of thing. This really is the last chance to run a stripped-down campaign and I want to take it.

Yes, it's always been possible, and soon more than ever, but I wonder if I really see the point of three-player matches. It just seems awkward to me, and lends itself to risk-averse play. (Slow play, hoping the other two kill eachother.) Maybe introduce a victory points system based on kills, rather than the last-man-standing victory condition.
But anyway, I'm tickled with the scale of the current map!
@DagobahDave ...
So, I just saw this, and decided to go to the web site and read the complete rules. This made me laugh:
Please do not abbreviate card names. Use this format when writing out your squad lists:
Ship + Upgrade + Upgrade
Example:
Red Squadron Pilot + R2-D2 + Adv. Proton Torpedoes
This'll be fun, but I think the older campaign was better, we will return to that format with the 3rd faction?

I'm pretty sure that his request is about it not being APT, which is the degree of abbreviation which is sometimes puzzling to newcomers here. Even some of use older hands (and my post-count notwithstanding, I haven't been around all that long) find those abbreviations confusing.

I chose that example very deliberately. The card name is "Adv. Proton Torpedoes".
What I want to avoid is stuff like:
GSP + PTL + SD
This'll be fun, but I think the older campaign was better, we will return to that format with the 3rd faction?
I don't really know what I'll do for season 3. I might try something entirely different from the first two. Maybe I'll get inspired and come up with a really neat way of adding narrative elements or resource management, and it'll be more of a story-based campaign that what we've seen so far. We'll see what happens. ![]()

This season is a much simpler format for a lot of reasons. I'd like to build a bigger audience for the UXGC and I think the wall of rules text for season 1 might have kept some folks away.I don't really know what I'll do for season 3. I'm not sure if season 1 was too complex. As much as I contributed, I didn't really make the effort to understand the mechanics of it. I preferred to tell a good story in the HNN reports. That said, I do think it was obscure what those rules in terms of what the fleets were, and the special locations, and all of that, were about. That or if the hyperlanes had particular value. It wasn't easy to see in one glance. But, by the same token, it didn't matter that much to me.

Imperial Forces Demonstrate Superior Technology After Setback
VINSOTH - The Empire put its superior starfighter technology on display today in the Vinsoth system. After a setback in the same system, Oversector Command decided to display its new firepower on the squadron mates of the defeated starfighter wing.
The exhibition of new technology, of which details were justly redacted from press reports, was enough to steel the starfighter wing's resolve for the fight that will come in the sector. Maj. Purvis, wing commander aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible, was, himself, aboard a shuttle craft while a few of his wing's bombers and fighters - visible through the shuttle's viewport - were being destroyed.
"While the technology is clearly devastating," Maj. Purvis admitted, though still a little hoarse from the experience, "we're clearly not prepared for such fighter craft aboard the Inflexible. Such technology is best put to use in the more contested parts of the galaxy. Here in the Quelii Sector, we will have things under control. TIE Fighers and TIE Bombers is all we need. Well, that and the occasional Interceptor, of course."
When asked if the demonstration was effective, Maj Purvis wholeheartedly agreed.
"Let's recall what happened," he said, "over the past few days, we have made tremendous strides in bringing peace and order back to this sector of space. We had a small set-back, and now we're all on our toes again. All in all, what looks to you like a tactical defeat is, in fact, a strategic victory. This means that fairly soon we will be able to celebrate the removal of the rebellion's nihilistic influence here."
Indeed we shall, readers. Indeed we shall.

Thanks for the reports! Unfortunately, mirror matches won't be entered into the campaign log for this season.
Edited by DagobahDaveWhat horrible timing! I'm on the edge of defecting to the Rebels, and I can't decide which faction to fight for!!!
[sigh] Well, since I just barely switched my avatar to a TIE interceptor, I guess I'll support my local government
Looking forward to bringing these wayward systems into the Imperial fold!
Dave,
of course I'm going to participate but (for the record) I think I liked the "Season One" format better... much better. I don't think there is much need to promote 1 v 1 100-point battles, as that is the standard tournament format and pretty much all I ever see. On the other hand, your previous campaign actually encouraged play formats other than the "same-old, same old" thing. The new campaign DOES give standard battles something of a context and thus exercise the imagination... a bit... but mot nearly as much as the previous campaign. To quote one of the previous posts, this campaign is kinds... "meh", IMO.
Still playin' though!
The first season took a long time to complete, and I think the complexity really did keep some players from participating (or just went over their heads). The new campaign already has 8 reports in its first week, which is a good start. So I think my plan to keep it simple is working.
The first season ended just about the same time the third faction was announced. I had the choice to wait until the third faction was available, or start a new season using the same format as the first (which would have seen the third faction ships arrive somewhere halfway), or start a new short season. I decided that it was best to run a short, simple season that might entice new players to join before things got complex again. The standard Imperials vs. Rebels format is probably the most popular way to play this game right now, so that seemed like a good idea. And really, I think it's a nice way to say goodbye to that format, since it's going to become less popular when Scum & Villainy arrives.
I think when you see the next season, you'll gain a better appreciation for what's happening in this one, but that's all I'm going to say about it for now. ![]()
I'll have a report for you soon. ![]()

Treason and Insurrection in the Ciutric System
VINSOTH - Imperial forces were routed in the Ciutric System of the eponymous sector. HNN reporters embedded with the Imperial units in the Ciutric Sector were able to transmit video data of the incidents leading to the fall of the Ciutric System, however, they were aboard the last shuttle out of the system, which - tragically, but courageously - embedded itself into an asteroid rather than give the terrorists the satisfaction of the kill. The same was true of one of its TIE-Fighter escorts.
Imperial Intelligence is, however, using the footage to gain analytical awareness of a new type of weapon system being used by terrorist elements. This weapon system appears to be a point-blank range rocket of some sort being launched by the "A-Wing" type of rebel fighter craft. This weapon system was used to devastating effect during the first of these two incidents. The other weapons platform type appeared to be new was a two-person variant of the "B-Wing" heavy fighter.
Both strikes were targeted at peaceful transport shuttles ferrying civilian personnel, and being accompanied by civilian craft.
Aboard the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible, which has been in space dock for nearly a month, Wing Commander Purvis commented on the attacks.
"This really burns me. Attacking military personnel is one thing, but targeting civilians in unconscionable," he said. "Will the Rebellion stop at nothing to sow chaos and anarchy in the Galaxy!?"
"This is exactly why we fight these traitors to the Emperor," he added, once he had calmed down. "These atrocities must stop, and the Inflexible starfighter wing will return to help restore order and human rights to the galaxy."
"That's correct, human rights," he clarified. "I'm tired of being politically correct when these alien .. things are murdering civilians in transit!"
When asked when the Inflexible would return to active service, Maj. Purvis replied, "well, erm, when we get through with our well-deserved R&R."

Inflexible Returns to the Front Lines
BOTAJEF - After a return to the academy, and a mission in the Yinchorr system, the Imperial Star Destroyer Inflexible, the naval academy's 'finishing school' for TIE fighter pilots, has returned to the front lines against the rebellion.
Immediately pursuant to training exercises involving the Imperial Royal Guard Academy on Yinchorr, the Inflexible was given new orders to return to the Outer Rim.
"We go where the navy orders us to go," Major Purvis, Wing Commander aboard the Inflexible told embedded reporters for HNN.
"Yes, we had been scheduled to return to the naval academy, but ... erm, when Royal Guard pilots accidentally got in the way of our blasterfire at the recent exercises on Yinchorr, the naval high command thought it fit to send us to the front."
As reported in a previous series of documentary reports, the trainees aboard the Inflexible were deployed in many battles in the New Territories. Once its tour had completed, the Inflexible had returned to the naval academy to graduate the three pilots who survived the tour, and to take on a new finishing class of navy cadets.
"We're very proud of our graduates. Yes... all three of them. The others, did their duty to the Emperor," Maj. Purvis reported. "And it's a distinct honor to be sent to the front here in the Botajef system where we are actively suppressing Rebel elements."
Apocryphal reports that the civil war had been taking a turn for the worse in the neighboring Ciutric sector were firmly denied.
"No, of course the war is not going badly here. If it were, Naval Command wouldn't send an Academy wing into an overly dangerous combat situation, would they?"
"Erm. They really wouldn't, would they?" Maj. Purvis asked his adjudant, who quickly reassured his commander.
"See, no, they would do no such thing, not even after Yinchorr."
And there you have it good citizens of the Galactic Empire. Order is being restored even here on the Outer Rim, where the Empire provides stability and order, even for the alien species who inhabit these hinterlands of space.

Write-ups like these would actually be a great addition to the campaign site. I know it would take a lot of time, but many of them could be brief, just a quick bit of flavor. A pic of the battle being reported would be awesome, too.

Okay, I've added a picture I just happened to take of my first battle. You see there the position my Academies are in right after they've made their movement, and just ahead of when he moved his interceptors into my Academies' line of fire.
