Itching to run a Colonist / Homestead game... (Gauging Interest)

By Simon Retold, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Due to a certain circumstances (absentee players and whatnot), my home game group is taking a Star Wars break for a couple weeks, but even when we get back in the swing of things, I doubt they're all going to want to reroll with brand new characters and start a homestead-based game with some of the new ideas from Far Horizons (and some homebrew add-ons). And yet, here I am just itching to give something like that a shot. Just the idea of something centralized, upon which the players can build, and more social interactions (less "Pew Pew!", more thinking) has me really excited about running the game for the first time since it was first released.

So... I'm thinking about running a game using Google Hangouts, and I'd like to gauge people's interest here. Who'd be interested in playing a colony or homestead-based game? You wouldn't have to be a colonist, though I'd like to see at least a couple take on that role. So far I haven't even really thought of a time to play, just that it would be something fun.

If you're interested, post here along with the type of character you'd like to play and the times you're free. Maybe we can get something rolling.

I would like to and I would play a colonist with the marshal spec.

I haven't gotten my hands on the new book yet, though I wonder how a colonist/homestead campaign would go. It seems like you'd have a plot similar to Deep Space 9, Earth 2, or the more recent Defiance. Neither of which really could go far without some kind of combat involved. And even Deep Space 9 came up with the Defiant so the crew could go places to expand upon the plot.

How would you go about planning for this as a GM?

Sadly I don't think I'd have the time to play, but I would love to hear how you want to tackle this challenge.

I think you could totally do a location-based campaign. Lots (perhaps most) Westerns centered around a single town or ranch, and you don't necessarily need a starship to travel--how about Piloting (Planetary), or even Survival to ride something?

There's plenty of combat in Westerns too; but most characters in them aren't combat monsters, and there's generally a reluctance to turn to violence.

I'll give it a bash. Strictly Colonists, or will any class do? (Thinking Explorer or Smuggler with a focus in piloting. Town delivery boy extraordinaire!)

There's all sorts of neat ideas for those kind of campaigns in Far Horizons, and I'll be mining those for sure if my own group ever comes into some property :)

EDIT: My work schedule doesn't have the same days off every week, but after 6PM CST on any day but Wed or Sun would work.

I'm down for such tomfoolery, and I love DS9 so the setting change doesn't bother me. I'd probably play... hmm, a doctor or a performer? I haven't seen the new book's trees yet, alas. But thanks for getting the ball rolling!

I had created another thread for everyone to ask me anything and everything about homesteads...

I've been refraining from posting on this thread yet because my situation just (temporarily) changed. I'm about to become a grandfather for the first time, and my daughter has been in labor all day. The situation just changes temporarily because we're headed down to visit with her and meet our new granddaughter, but I'll be back by the weekend and we can get things rolling for those who are interested!

Congratulations to you, and to the parents to be! Have a safe trip, and we look forward to seeing you back here! :)

Congrats!

I imagine it a lot like being a parent again, except you can take care of the kiddo when you want to. It also gives you the opportunity to just smile when your daughter complains about how hard it is to raise a kid. :D

I would love to play in a game. I'm always the GM and never the player, so it would be nice to play in the game, and play as a different spec to the last time I got to play.

I'd have liked to go with the Marshal, but since that was already taken I'm keen to go with a more intellectual based role, perhaps the town's Doctor.

PS: Congrats on the new arrival! ^^

Are you still looking for players for this? I'm interested in trying out the Entrepreneur spec.

Looks like you got quite a few sign ups already but if you have room for one more I'd love to try my hand at being a player (normally a GM), possibly a local mechanic? Thinking drall or something like that for aesthetic reasons
