Adding Resources to Characters

By dshaffer, in UFS Rules Q & A

Something I noticed earlier while glancing through the new rules document. Basically just checking to see if this was an oversight in the rules.

At the moment, there are several cards in the current block that allow you to add resource symbols to your character. The various Seals have the stipulation that they may only add a resource symbol if you do not otherwise have it, however the others do not. Examples of these are Warrior Princess with Elena, Tower of Rememberance - Spiral of Time, and Needs No Ally. After reading and searching through the rules document several times, there's nothing I can find that would stop you from giving yourself the same resource symbol twice. Normally this wouldnt matter but we have multiple cards that count the total number of symbols for various effects, usually a damage bonus or as conditionals (IE, must match 2 or more symbols).

This could lead to the interpretation that if you have Good on your character, and use one of the mentioned cards to add the Good resource symbol to your character, that any card in play with Good now matches two symbols on your character. Somehow, I dont think this was the intention, and yet I dont see anything in the advanced rules that counters it. I know it's been ruled against in the past, but that was prior to the current rule document. I'm checking to see if this is a deliberate change.

Based on 2.1.14 when a character gains a resource they already have, they are considered to have only the one copy of the resource.

In the case of Warrior Princess etc, it's like committing a card that's already committed - you can't gain a resource you already have.

I figured this wasnt meant, which was why I brought it up. That said, I'll note 2.1.14 does not read that way as is. It only mentioned the case of added symbols when it's caused by character stacking. It really needs to be edited to add in that line of text, or preferably given an entire new line stating 'A character may not gain a resource symbol it already has', in which case you can just cut that text from 2.1.14 anyways.

Might not really be a bad idea to state NO card can get a resource symbol it already has in the general rules somewhere, either.

We'll go with either

11.0.1 or 11.14 - No card may gain an additional copy of a resource symbol already present on the card.

Either way, noted for the next release.
