Guys, will Armada cause you to give up X-Wing?

By Papa Midnight, in Star Wars: Armada

Not at all. I've been playing multiple game systems for three decades, so why stop now. Purchasing will probably slow down, but not playing.

No, though I anticipate playing more Armada than X-Wing.

No no no no never. I plan on playing both as much as possible.

I don't understand how playing one will somehow prevent the other.

I play Cataan. I play Lords of Waterdeep. I play Ticket to Ride (in many of it's releases). I play a dozen other board games.

Will I run out and buy it right away? I have no idea. I want to see it in action first-hand, and probably play it myself at a game con demo, to see if I like the feel of it.

But why would I give up one game that I really enjoy, for another game that I really enjoy? Yeah, I don't quite get the question.

Of course not! I don't have much desire to pick up the large X-wing ships at all, let alone multiples, so I'm sure I can find some room in my budget for Armada while still getting whatever new snubfighters FFG puts out for X-Wing.

Even if I couldn't buy new X-Wing minis, I certainly wouldn't give up on that great game. As Slugrage asks, why would anybody give up on X-Wing just because Armada was released?

In the end? Perhaps a finite amount of time.

I run my own business - work 48 to 60 hours per week. Leaves a relatively small amount of leisure time.

I have 2 kids (16 yo son, 13 yo daughter) so I want to and get to attend multiple sports and theater productions every school year. Averages about 4-5 hours per week.

I have a wife who will play Catan, but prefers lighter games like Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, etc. Happy to play with her, so there is more time accounted for. Wait - forgot TV and movies, and the internet. It all adds up.

Why say all this? depending on what age and place you are in life and its requisite time commitments, there isn't time to play everything!

When I was 18, I could have, now at 48 not so much. Too much of a good thing elsewhere to spend it all gaming.

FWIW, I'm not knocking what you said, Slugrage, just answering your question: But why would I give up one game that I really enjoy, for another game that I really enjoy?

Because for many people, time is not unlimited. Not that we don't wish that it was, but it simply isn't.

Hope that gives you at least one perspective on "why". Happy for you if you don;t have those other demands, but then, I wouldn't trade places with anyone.

What? Why? This is the best of both worlds.... Say goodbye to epic though.

Nope... my Girlfriend will be the one being neglected... lol... but I won't miss the opportunity to get my hands on a Victory Class Star Destroyer!!! Maybe I'll even run both games simultaniously...

I'm heavily considering dropping X-wing when Armada is released. For now, I am going to cut back on my X-wing purchases, and will see what is happening in X-wing at the time of Armada's release. If I can get by with purchasing for both games, I will... but I fear X-wing will end up suffering in the long term, in my case anyway.

Cheers

I will not be dropping x-wing. I also want to demo and play armada before I buy in, it is not the easy insta buy that X-wing was. That said a well produced tutorial video from FFG can sway me to play.

I think they are going to be dramatically different games. Its the same as asking now that imperial assault is coming out are you going to drop x-wing to play it.

No no no no never. I plan on playing both as much as possible.

You, sir, are an inspiration.

I wish I had the funds to play both games.... and a gaming group willing to come along with me.

It kinda depends on what everyone else in my local area ends up doing. If everyone stops playing X-Wing in favor of Armada, then I'll have no choice, else I'd have nobody else to play.

I won't drop X-wing, but I might have to favor one faction more than I would like, particularly in Armada. I might have to be solely Imperial.

Otherwise I will go broke.

I understand the limited time, I don't understand why having limited time I should limit my choice of game to just one. If this were true then I would never have need to buy another DVD as I have one already. As much as I like spaggetti, I would tire of spaggetti if that was all I ate.

It isn't just a time issue for some of us. I can afford to switch meals often, but I can't afford to buy three meals for every meal time.

This is perhaps the main force (pun intended!) that we must factor in our gaming.

While X-wing did make a splash in my gaming group when it was released, it has since fizzled. I hope that Armada doesn't do the same. I don't think that it will. :)

One of my friends from our weekly gaming club described it as "I'd like to keep playing board games as well. I'm already spending a lot of time at the tabletop with X-wing. If I star Armada as well, I'll be spending all of my time playing tabletop games. Might as well have continued playing Warhammer then."

No way....this just adds to the star wars franchise. We been lacking great star wars games in general. Video, table top, board games, Etc.

I never picked up Star Wars Monopoly. :)

I see people most playing both.

XWM is awesome and going in the right direction.

Armada is TBD in my opinion.

No but I will be spending most of my money on Armada from now on.

I have yet to see Armada working. So far, I am not sold. The mechanics seem to be fairly solid, but it is all in the balancing. Could go into the trap of either WWII (fighters dominating) or WWI (dreadnoughts dominating) which would be almost equally boring. A lot depends on the objectives, which can make or break a game. To be watched...

Will I give up X-Wing? no probably not. I'm almost a year invested into it and have just gotten to where I feel like I am a decent player. Armada looks amazing and while I am unsure if I will invest into it, I have members in my group who will be getting into it so I still will most likely play it. I could definitely see some potential for fun campaigns from perhaps a fighter skirmish and then all of the sudden a Victory Class jumps in and here we have a full on capital brawl.

Most assuredly not. I have a large investment in x-wing in terms of time and money and people actually play it. I will play Armada when I can but still carry my x-wing pieces for pickup games. Tie-in or escalation battles would also be fun, using the two games in concert. In the long run, while big fleet battles appeal to me more strongly, there will always be a place in my heart for the dogfight. Heck, even if Armada completely eclipses X-wing in terms of playerbase(I don't believe it shall), I'm not going to get rid of my minis and attendant paraphernalia.

Now the real question is "how badly will Armada crimp your gaming budget on release", because it looks like there will be a 2-3 month window where I'm buying enough Armada stuff that I can't afford more x-wing(the "must have one of everything and two to three of everything good" effect). Which is fine, given how long I've had to put together my x-wing forces. :D

I'll be building both fleets, if just for the pure and simple fact that it will be easier to get someone into the game if you can plonk a pre-built fleet down in front of them and get on with the 'splaining.

It made my decision regarding getting into the lcg. But xwing will be staying around. Fighters are more fun to fly than space busses. But I just cant say no to that mk2 frigate

For me everything will come down to what I can find games for if the local area has a large Armada group (or I get friends into it) I'll play it, but if X-wing stays bigger X-wing will be the primary game for me
