I'm glad they tossed the EU (called Legends now) out from official canon. It means episodes 7-9 will be completely fresh. While I did enjoy parts of Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi, some of the stories were just ridiculous. Like, midichlorian ridiculous.
Star Wars EU is it really gone?

THIS.
I think most EU fans wish they had taken a more selective route when it came to canon. Was there a lot of crap? Yes, but there where more than a few gems as well. If they had left the good stuff in, there wouldn't be so much complaining. Instead we are left waiting and wondering what will be ported over and see future use.
I don't think this is a problem that will go away anytime soon. EU fans will keep moping, non-EU fans will continue griping about the moping. Eventually enough new material will come out and we will see if the first group is right lamenting the end of the old EU, or the second group is right that all the best stuff will be remade. Worst case: we'll get something in between and the complaing will never end.
People don't agree what's good and bad. So they said "Screw it" like any logical being in their situation would.

There are other indicators though. Stories that won awards, or that were best sellers are pretty good indicators that something is worth keeping.

Call of Duty won tons of awards.
It is an utterly sh*t game.

There are also 20 games in the CoD series.
I really can't speak to the quality of those games, seeing as i've never played any of them. I would have to imagine they did something right though.
Edited by admiralcrunchI always was under the impression that nothing outside of the movies was canon, but that Disney would be cherry picking the best the EU had to offer and making it canon by including it in the new movies. Let's face it, there is a wealth of stuff out there, they'd be remiss to summarily dismiss it all. But, with they're policy on how they are handling this, they can drag in suitable pieces as they find the need for them, without having to decide on things that aren't in the immediate plans.
After the announcement and during the q&a they said the clone wars was canon , games basically were undecided and everything after the announcement was equal canon.
I'm sorry but no, the EU will always be the REAL canon for me. The disney movies might be good, or great. But I've grown up with the EU. There might be silly things like the Sun Crusher, but there are always great things like the Yuuzhon-Vong or KotOR. The EU IS my Star Wars. I won't mind purging of some things like Sun Crusher, books before Episode 6, but I won't be happy if they purge say, X-wing, NJO, LotF, TT etc.
Yeah, Legacy of the Force belongs no where near those other series you listed. Also, NJO and beyond is already pretty much scrapped, because Chewie is back.
