M3-A - the cannon law

By Redblock, in X-Wing

After I stopped worrying and resigned myself to play second faction after rebels (curse you FFG for marketing so efficient) I went over the article to find what to add to my "Most wanted" fleet. M3-A cought my eye as little ship that could.

What we know so far about it? 8 skill pilot is named Beribbu, or some other combination of B and R, but his ability is clear - "when another ship at range 1 is defending it may reroll 1 defence die". Simple, and very efficient, it gives Scum their version of Biggs - pilot everyone is forced to shoot first to get to your other ships. Stat line is 2 - 3- 2 -1 . Point cost for 8 pilot skill is 20, others are 6, 5 and 2. If compared to other close stats ships 2 skill will cost 13-14. Scum will have 12 cost ship already in for of Z-95 most likely. It gets interesting after we get to upgrades - it only has ept on 8 skill, but comes with title what gives choice of cannon, missile or torpedoe for 2 points.

So for 15 or 16 points you can have ordnance delivered en masse. Insane lists include 4xHLC, or if 1 skill cost 13 you can have 5 assault missiles. But lets think small and add simple Ion cannons, so its only 18 or 19 points per ship. Ions actualy increase damage output of M3-A, and 5 ion cannons on quite maneuvrable ship (it has barrel roll, and dial should be at least average, maybe no 5 straight, but some greens). Or, if Scum Y-wings have turret slot (most likely they will, as there is few turret upgrades in Most wanted), you can mix at 2 and 2 to leave some points for upgrades.

And that is only one possible list, we still don't know how two new cannons from M3-A expansion works, and their point cost, so sky is the limit.

I forsee the HLC not being a good option on the M3-A. Its going to make the low generic over 20 points (its a 9 point upgrade). That's a lot of points for a ship that can be one-shotted. Now if it has a pretty good dial and can arc dodge well, then you might be able to use it effectively.

I bet the other cannons will be better options.

That is what Alex seemed to be saying about it though, tat the M3-A would in a way be 2 ships, a low cost filler and a high cost glass cannon.

If it can arc-dodge on a cheap ship then the HLC could have a new home but I definitely can see the Ion Cannons being a nice touch. Unless they strip the Z-95 of its missiles I don't know why you'd pay to carry them with the Scyk.

I see agility based missile from rebel aces just might be usefull on M3

I'm 100% okay with them having a glass cannon like that, sure loading it with a HLC wont always work out but imps have the phantom.

that PS8 Pilot is actually a female bothan.

She was present in the Post-NGE tutorial section for SWG as a Car'Das pilot. She was your instructor.

Can anyone find the Mathwing on Autoblaster with two attack dice? Seems like it may have some value here, but the question is whether it has 7 points of Value.

And people wonder why the empire killed so many.

SWG shows its age these days.

Autoblaster is a substantial step up in damage for a ship with 2 Attack, against targets with 2+ Agility (and close to even against ships with 1 Agility). But the other major constraint on its use is still that you have to catch your target at Range 1, and a ship with 2 Attack is in a worse situation at Range 2-3 than a ship with 3 Attack.

I don't foresee Scyks with Autoblasters being particularly successful.

EDIT: Also, since the Scyk has 3 Agility and 3 total hit points, I'm not sure it really wants to be at Range 1, particularly once you hit that low-20s point range.

IT has barrel roll. If it has the right dial it could be worth it. Sadly it will probably have a dial like a Z rather than a tie. The cannons that come with it might be better options anyway (they usually are).

I could see a Scyk swarm getting nasty. A PS5 pilot with Bodyguard in the rear to buff the PS8 pilot to AG4, who grants rerolls to the pilots around him, and could even rock Swarm Tactics. It's spendier than a TIE swarm, but could also have a lot more firepower.

2 points to give a missile/torpedo slot seems bad, though. I can't envision a situation where I'd pay two points extra for a single-use weapon.

Proton Rockets, possibly.

Dirt cheap kamikaze against prime targets, hmm maybe.
