Commanders...Come and speculate with me

By GrandAdmiralCrunch, in Star Wars: Armada

At this point all we know is that you must have one in your fleet. The pictures seen so far seem to indicate that we will get General Dodonna, and Grand Moff Tarkin with the base set.

So...

What are your thoughts so far?

What do you think they will bring to the table?

What do you wan't them to do?

Who is on top of your wishlist?

me?

I find General Dodonna an odd choice at first blush. I mean he's a General... but...it would be interesting if his play style focused on fighters. Perhaps gave bonuses to them, or allowed you to command them from greater distances so he could stay in the rear.

Not sure about Tarkin. I mean he's fine as an addition, but not sure what his play style will be. The man loves big stations and I cannot lie.

I hope we will see Grand Admiral "blue man group" Thrawn, and Admiral "it's a trap" Ackbar. Admiral "It's a me, mario" Palleon would also be cool.

General Screed is an absolute guarentee for the Gladiator-class Star Destroyer since his flagship, the Demolisher, was of that exact type. See here:

Darth Vader ;)

As a Commander of an ISD (future wave) and the Black Squadron (hopefully in the wave 1 'fighter pack')

Thrawn of course ... does a VSD fit him?

Soontir Fel as a commander of a T/I squadron

Jonus or Rhymer as a commander of a Bomber Squadron

Maarek Stele? His comeback as a Tie Advanced Squadron Commander? With even the same ability? ;)

My wild guess for Thrawn would be that you always have the initiative. You don't pass it back in forth. But that might be too powerful.

For the Empire alone there is a lot to work with, just from characters on screen. Since Tarkin is available, that opens up some interesting possibilities. Admiral Motti and General Tagge come to mind. Then there's Needa, Piett, Ozzel, Veers, and Moff Jerjerrod.

From other sources come Thrawn, Daala, Pelleaon, Parck, the other 12 grand admirals and more I cant think of off the top of my head.

For the Rebellion, there is Willard who was at Yavin, Rieekan, Major Derlin, Ackbar and Madine. Most seem to be generals or non-fleet officers, and only Akbar is in admiral. There's also the fighter commanders, but Wedge Antillies was not an admiral either. I know I have to be missing some here. Seems that in most non-movie sources, Akbar was the "go-to" character when a Rebel admiral was needed.

Who am I missing? I was trying to list only flag officers, but I'm sure there is more there.

Depending on how deeply they are delving into the EU, Wedge was made general at one point and givin command of a flight of Mon Cal Cruisers. IRC it wasn't a very good story, and he didn't handle being a fleet wrangler very well.

It was my understanding from the teamcovenant demo video that 1 player keeps the initiative the whole game. It doesn't get passed back and forth.

Captain Needa totally needs to have something that lets you discard him for an effect... But only after you fail a dice roll or something.

General Garm Bel Ibis. General Solo... but he really didn't captain any ships. Yeah, really not a whole lot of admirals on the Rebel side. They mostly go for the General title.

This could help

Dodonna was basically the father of Alliance Starfighter doctrine true but he was also captain of one of the first Victory class Star Destroyers during the Clone Wars, as well as leading a major task force during that fleet's first campaign and another task force during the early Imperial anti-CIS holdout campaigns. Plus he was an officer of the Judaical forces before the war. He definitely knew his way around the bridge of a warship and command of a task force. I wouldn't be surprised if he gave a bonus to starfighter forces under his command though.

For the Alliance Ackbar is basically guaranteed IMO, probably with a bonus to Mon Cal ships should any other then the MC80s appear in game . I would like to see Garm bel Iblis and Raymus Antilles as well plus Wookieepedia has lists of Alliance Fleet admirals and officers.

And the Empire has plenty of Admirals and Captains to choose from. Piett and Thrawn are at the top of my want list.

I happened upon the General Dodonna upgrade card while walking past a demo game. It is...

"25 points, Rebel

When a friendly ship is attacking, before the defender is dealt a face up damage card, look at the top 3 cards of the damage deck, place 1 on top of the deck, and discard the others."

So Dodonna is the Marek Steele of Armada, which might seem disappointing, except that James mentioned that critical damage cards in Armada are really nasty, much more so than X-Wing apparently. So this ability could be quite nice. I am so interested to see how the points scheme shakes out exactly with Dodonna costing nearly twice as much as an X-Wing squadron.

Thrawn of course ... does a VSD fit him?

In TIE Fighter the game you 'meet' Thrawn when he is a Vice Admiral conducting a campaign from of a VSD called the Stalwart

Admiral Ackbar

Action: yell out "It's a trap" and re-read any number of dice.

Sounds like something out of Magic the Gathering Unglued.

Admiral Ozzel and Captain Piett of course and Admiral Piett after he gets his field promotion.

Admiral Ozzels card would be discard this card and take Admiral Piett from your box >. <

I hope we'll get Voss Parck and the Strikefast for the VSD. As for future releases I'd like to see some of the more popular Grand Admirals like Thrawn and Zaarin as well as Admiral Daala, Zsinj and Cpt Pelleon. For the Rebels, Ackbar is almost a given, though I do hope they give him a cool ability, and Garm Bel Iblis of course.

Its funny thinking about this cuz you realize that the Imps have a longer list of named naval officers then the Rebels do. Its almost certainly due to the fact that new villians had to be introduced everytime there's a new story whereas the Rebels heroes usually stay the same except when it comes to Rogue/Wraith Squadron stories.

Since we're naming names, how about ship titles? For the ISD I'd like to see Chimaera, Avenger, Stalker, Accuser, Vengeance and the rest of Vader's Death Squadron fleet if possible. As for the Rebels, Home One, Liberty, Independence, Defiance and Mon Remonda for the Mon Calamari Cruisers.

Im so exited with this game...

Im in a motivation plan between my star wars friends!!

And I hope for a nice fighter specialization.

Lets see waths hapen un the next months....

And

May the force be with your!!

I'll be really annoyed to not be able to field Admiral Daala as my fleet commander.

I would love seeing Wedge as General (though since he commanded the SSD Lusankya, that's unlikely. But I can dream). Or Admiral Areta Bell on the Endurance (though that's even further out than the E-Wing in terms of EU canon).

In terms of ships, I would really love to see some of the lesser known Mon Cal cruisers have their day - the Mon Delindo, Mon Karren, the Ocean, the Kraken. Or maybe even some cards that allow you to have ISDs captured by the New Republic - the Rebel Dream especially.

Some pocket carriers like the Flurry from Truce at Bakura are pretty cool as well, since they hold a ridiculous amount of fighters for their size.

My money is on Wedge in the fighter pack, (unfortunately,) I remember a quote about him and Akbar doing the same thing just Akbar liking the big ships and Wedge liking the small fast ones.

I would too, I wonder if they will make the MC80 and MC80B be the same ship (and separate cards) or make them as separate models(assuming both make it into the game) If the MC80B makes it then I think Han will be in that one.

I would so love to field New Republic Imp Cls Star Destroyers but probably not likely to happen. I do hope that the Nebula-class SD will make it into Armada otherwise there goes my dream of fielding Star Destroyers as a Rebel.

I mean, I agree that Wedge is best (and happiest) as a snubfighter jockey, but he's no mean strategist or tactician, as Allston's Enemy Lines duology shows. I'm also all for him in a fighter pack, as long as his ability is awesome enough to get him as a huge component in victories and many, many matches (it bugs me no end that even though he's nearly always target of priority when taken, he's not taken that much in X-Wing according to recent tournament results.)

Nebulas and Endurance-class SDs would be amazing - but kinda hilarious, since they're about the size of a Vicstar, but as powerful as an Impstar Deuce.
