Greetings and custom figure question...

By Hoosteen, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello there!

I've posted on the X-Wing Miniatures board a bunch, and even though I only recently bought Descent, I've played it more than a few times!

Until recently, I've always played with about 4/5 friends, always using their set.

But now that I have my own copy, I want everything: all the expansions, all the lieutenant packs, and especially the Co-op kit. For now, though, I am content with the core set, and trying out Nerdook's D6 co-op variant.

This brings me to my question. How do you guys feel about creating characters (heros or monsters) to add to the game? I am specifically talking about taking an existing hero/monster card, and changing the name, picture, and figure, nothing else. I don't plan to create completely new characters, or make some existing guy overpowered with unreasonable stats.

Would you be opposed to playing with someone who had a hero like this? Nothing changed but the figure and name, using existing stats and cards (as to not affect the hero's design)? Or facing a monster with the same stats as an existing monster, used in the same quests and so on?

For example: I love the necromancer character. So, I would be using a different figure instead of Tarha or Leoric or any of the other mages. (*note* the figure I would be using LOOKS like a wizard. It matches the part.) my wife is an excellent artist, so she would be drawing a picture similar to the avatars in the character cards. Pop that picture into an existing card, change the name, maybe the quote on the back, and that's it! Nothing else.

Would you be opposed to playing with one of these?

I don't see the point.

I'm trying to create custom stuff to descent, but really new one. Why using another artwork and mini for existing stuff ?

If your wife si so good, if I were you, and had that luck, I would do new stuff.

Personnally, I would be opposed because I reconize figure and hero stats by the artwork and mini. Using another ones would pertub me, and as an Overlord, I could make big mistakes, searching who is who, and loosing time and concentration. Since I've got a really good memory, and I'm visual, that would be really a threat.

but if it's new stuff, I would be ok to test it if it's really well made.

I don't see the point.

Haha, yup. I see Trenloe and I think, "ouch." I see Leoric and I think, "Grease Trap!"

Honestly, the most interesting things are new/custom classes and abilities. If you had the thought to create entirely new heroes or monsters (sort of a custom hero/monster pack) that would be really intriguing.

The point?

Liking a hero card, but not the figure.

Take Widow Tahra:

She's got decent stats, and a pretty good special ability.

But I'm not a big fan of her figure. (never really liked female orcs)

So, rather than make up new stats (that an Overlord would be unfamiliar with), and a new special ability (that an Overlord would be unfamiliar with), I would simply be using Widow Tarha's information.

In addition to this, when you create a hero card from scratch, you inevitably run into problems of over/under powered-ness. A stat being too high, or a special ability too powerful. In using a current hero's stats, you would not run into this problem.

I am not asking if anyone else wants to "try them out" or whatever. I'm asking if you would be against playing with a figure if someone said, "Hey, here's "_________." He's got the same stats of "__________," just a different figure."

I would not be against that.

As I said before, yes I would be agaisnt.

Because the mini and artwork are important to me to see who is who by only one quick look.

Imagine, I'm so closeminded that I can't even use another miniature than the true one for lieutenants ... I rather prefer token that a "false" mini ...

And since I play a hero (when I do, it's not often) more for the figure than for the stats, I can't understand your thinking. If I don't like the figure, I don't play the hero, that's all !
