Multi-game Campaign (X-wing, Armada, Assault)

By newmagrathea, in X-Wing

My friends and I are already kicking around ideas of doing a campaign using all three games. Anyone else also have this idea? Obviously we have to wait a little while for the games come out and get the full details of how they play so we can set a structure/scoring system.

Some of the overarching concepts we were thinking about were:

Selecting a specific pilot in X-wing as your pilot.

Increasing point values for skirmishes won.

Depending on the skirmish point allotted, it could be a large x-wing game or a small assault game.

If the attacking side wins near a planet then it goes to an Assault game

Thoughts?

These are all great starting point ideas. I am actually going to host a campaign next year using these three games and will keep a detailed account of what is going on either via a gaming blog or here on the forums.

One thing I am mulling over is possibly having two games going on at the same time, be it assault and armada or armada and x wing and as major things happen in each of those games they affect what is happening in the other game.

I think that as long as they are not the same location it shouldn't be an issue. The outcome of each battle would effect the next battles I would think. Another thing that would like to work in is scum and villainy. Maybe give them strategic locations that could be claimed or expanded.

Very awesome suggestions. The new faction adds some spice to the going on's of the galaxy. You will have to keep me up to date one what you decide, I would love to have another persons perspective of an epic campaign.

One of the easier ways to do this would be to copy the galaxy conquest part of the Star Wars battlefront 2.

Space battles occur over planets. Small squadrons (xwing) are played in the middle of big ships (armada.) the the attacker can defeat the space defenders they go in for the planetary assault.

Rinse lather repeat.

There could even be an escape battle after an Assault game. Probably an x-wing game using the rebel transports. Hopefully they will come out with huge ships for the Imperials, if not then probably just use rebel transports as an Imperial ship.

I have written some scenarios for Starship battles and star wars minis. To be played together, the SSB rules were not very good but the ground rules were quite solid. Some of the layer sets got into ridiculous power creep, but the first 3 or 4 sets were really good. Anyway, might have to change some point values but the back story and everything would still work.

I've love the idea of combining the games, but Holy Vishnu $100 is a steep starter set. I'm assuming that's going to hit the UK at £100, which is more than even GW charge for a starter set...

If they ever release a full-size star destroyer it's going to be as long as the box.

Yeah, I have thought of this too...but I was thinking one side would try to invade a planet, then have to get through the enemy fleet (Armada), Then get through the fighters in the atmosphere (X-wing), then fight on the ground (Imperial Assault).

That's a good idea too. You could so different scenarios for different locations. Empire invades planet A, Rebels escape planet B.

There could be a list of different game types:

Invade/Defend

Escape/Contain

Hit and Run

Rescue

Looting

I was thinking of something similar. Decide in advance who controls the system, then go from Armada to X-Wing to Imperial Assault.

If the attacker loses the Armada and/or X-wing battles, then the Imperial Assault is about doing a raid on the enemy to destroy or capture something. The attackers lost so the system doesn't change hands, but their objective switches from conquering to doing a hit and run raid.

Hmm...that could be very interesting actually...

Maybe I am going slightly crazy with my ideas. But I was thinking of a campaign. You start with a certain number of planets and like risk or other games, planets produce so many points. Everyone starts with an equal amount of planets so an equal amount of points. You spend your points on supposed ships (don't use minis yet) Then allocate them to different planets. The goal would be to fight the space battles then the ground battles to take planets from the other side. This would be like a 6 month campaign. Once a month you get more points based on the planets you own and then can allocate ships and move resources between planets. You would play weekly to keep the game going as you probably couldnt do space and ground in one go. I havent figured out exact timing or how you determine who gets to attack and who defends.

I may be going overboard. But it sounds fun to me.
