Let's speculate on Auto-thrusters

By GiraffeandZebra, in X-Wing

What about if you are being shot from out side your firing arc you may turn your ship to face the attacker? or rotate your ship up to 90* after you have finished your maneuver?

I know, broken record and all that, but again, how does that help defend against turrets? This confirmed fact is our biggest clue and yet so many people seem to be ignoring it.

OT slightly, but it would be neat to see a critical hit that froze turrets into the forward firing arc. "Jammed Gear"or something.

What about a card that keeps you alive if you take damage equal to your hull value, by reducing damage down to 1 less than remaining, but you have to discard it after you take any damage.

So a 1 shot protection card.

We got Fel's Wrath but that isn't a popular card for some reason. Though I like thematic cards they don't always equal tournament winners.

Definitely should be something boosty

Huh, didn't know that. But still I'm trying to ask myself what the hell an even more maneuverable but also more expensive fighter is going to do to fight a turreted ship better? Namely with out breaking the game in their favor? It's a mystery to me. Whatever it's called I would like it to force front arc shots out of 360 ships but somehow not step on Firesprays auxiliary arc.

Should be pretty easy (and likely, IMO). The Firespray's rear arc is still an arc (just not a primary one) so anything that says "outside the firing arc" will affect turrets but not rear (auxillary) arcs. See Backstabber.

None of you have considered the possibility that this could be a C3PO like ability.

Autot(une) 6 points You may choose to use this upgrade card at the beginning of the activation phase. You and your opponent each sing an agreed upon song that is well known by your culture. A third party confirms which player was the better singer. The better singer removes two damage cards from a ship of their choice. The poorer singer takes two damage to a ship of their choice. Discard this card after use.

Clearly a big risk as the inflated egos of X-wing players greatly increases the chances that they overestimate their singing capability.

Just about all of these ideas look really great for E-wings who go YT or Dash-hunting.

Doug Kinney said on his interview on NOVA podcast #8, that "you will need this on your interceptors". So if Doug thinks it's good, then it's probably pretty good. And it sounds more exciting than my simple +1 agility for 2 cost when out of arc.

I already said it is going to be a gunner for agility rolls. I am going to be right.

This intrigues me, too, but how could it work? Maybe this?

When defending, if you would be hit by an attack, you may reroll any or all of your defense dice.

But, the REAL bane to arc dodgers would still be a issue: Gunner. If you use this to evade the attack completely, Gunner would still activate.

Lots of good ideas on this thread, many that are probably TOO good, but others that I could definitely see on the table and would love to play.

I think it should include a "both gunner and auto... cancels each other" in the card text, but it may make it too complicated.

And instead of "any or all of your defense dice" it should be "all of your defense dice". Atleast, that's how it worked out in my head.

What about an evade token when you are attacked by a ship from outside its primary? Too good? I was all on the bandwagon of extra agility until what Doug Kinney said.

Edit: already mentioned and I forgot. Even I mentioned it as well, back on page one. Wow my memory is bad. I'm sure somebody already mentioned an anti-Wedge-like ability as well (lower attack value by 1 when out of arc).

My bet is that autothrusters let you reroll blanks on evade dice when your ships is out of enemy's arc.

Defensive "Gunner" when out of arc would be amazing!

I sincerely hope that Autothrusters is as awesome as we hope it is, because dancing and juking around my opponents firing arc is one of the most satisfying feelings in XWMG.

It is indeed, and so do I. I am just a little concerned that it is going to become a must include card, negating the option to other cards.

Normally I would agree because this would reduce the design space, but this is alleviated to some extent by this card:

Alleviated a bit for the interceptor, but that isn't going to do anything to alleviate the issue for any other arc doting ships that turrets shred.

Such as...? Almost everything else that wants to dodge can take at least one unlucky hit. The Interceptor is the ship with the greatest need, but it's also the ship with the best flexibility in terms of modifications.

I guess we're all assuming that the TIE Advanced fix will come from auto thrusters plus a title of some kind?

Hadn't even occurred to me to think about this on the advanced yet.

If it involves Boost and/or Barrel Roll, it could be limited to being more useful on Interceptors than other ships by only allowing an action for which you already have the appropriate icon in your action bar. In other words, an Advanced only has Barrel Roll, and thus when equipped with Autothrusters could only perform that action, and not a Boost. This seems fairly likely to me (though of course still only speculation) given that the StarViper which it comes with also has native Boost and Barrel Roll icons.

Not necessarily. If I am recalling the interview correctly, when talking about the dominance of turrets, they said they were aware of the situation and that there was a card in the star viper expansion to help deal with it, and that interceptor players were REALLY going to want to get it. Or something like that. A couple minutes later, after the interview had moved on a bit, they commented that they were also aware that the advanced was weak and had something in the works to fix it but they didn't explicitly say that the fix for turret dominance was the same thing.

Indeed! Also, in the same comment they named titles as a brilliant solution, but also wanting the title to be unique.

So no Chaardan refit for the advanced, but one unique to solve the issues this ship has.

I took it to mean that they want to do a bit more than merely reducing the cost of the Advanced. So, less Chardaan Refit, more Royal Guard Interceptor and A-wing Test Pilot.
