[OFF TOPIC] Best Star Wars Video Game?

By bayruun, in X-Wing

I was reminded of my favorite SW video game, Republic Commando, while making my way through season 5 of Clone Wars. Guess what, clone commandos are canon, so where's my RC2?

Republic Commando may have been repetitive and, at times, difficult, but it shouldn't be an easy game. It really makes the player feel like part of a well-trained team through its innovative command system. It also reinforced that you, alone, aren't all that great and that you need your team to get by. There are plenty of Rambo games out there. It's refreshing to be a squad.

Other than that, I loved X-Wing versus TIE Fighter, as well as Alliance. Knights of the Old Republic was also very good.

What does this forum think? I can already imagine how many of you liked Empire at War, although I couldn't stand it. Some of you hated The Force Unleashed, which I'm happily playing through, and TFUII, which I thought was very cinematic.

TIE Fighter. Still holds up to this day. Amazing game.

Tie between Knights of the Old Republic, and TIE Fighter.

X-Wing Alliance for me!

Although Knights of the Old Republic was a great Star Wars RPG

KotOR, Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, Star Wars Galaxies, X-wing Alliance, Empire at War, and Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds.

Tie fighter

/thread.

I'm always a bit surprised when I see people mention X-wing vs. TIE Fighter as their favorite SW game. To me that was (by far) the worst of the X-wing and TIE Fighter line of games. I never did play the story mode expansion though.

Oh, and my favorite: TIE Fighter. Still play it today.

TIE fighter for solo play, such a well thought out game with nice touches like the 'serve the emperor' sub plots

In our old student house back in PS1 days 'masters of terra kasai' was played a lot... i mean it was a blatent tekken rip off but you got to have luke vs vader light sabre fights!

There are so many that it's hard to put my finger on it. I'll have to pick a few by cathegories:

Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2 Mysteries of the Sith: this was one of my first online games and had some wonderful complexities. If you knew what you were doing, you could easily come in saber swinging and match up against 2 or 3 other Jedi/Sith without breaking a sweat. It was the first game that I joined a clan with and held regular training sessions for, it has a special place in my heart.

X-Wing Alliance: it's a close tie between X-Wing vs Tie fighter (with the balance of power expansion) and this one, but these games are still part of my favorite simulations.

Star Wars Galaxies: the game went through both light and dark extremes of passions, but it was the players that truly made the game alive. No matter how the whole thing crashed, I'll still remember the good times, flying my own ship and marvelling at all the stuff the players made.

Um... I'd still want to write more, but I feel like I'm pushing it by nominating 3 already :P

Don't worry, I nominated 5 ;)

KotoR. I'll give Soul Calibur IV a nod for the awesome inclusion of Yoda and Vader. Although I hated losing as Yoda due to a bad jump off the edge. Bouncy little Jedi he was.

I didn't get to play Tie-Fighter or X-Wing pc games but I did play a lot of Rogue Squadron and Shadows of the Empire (I was young and dumb and loved cheat codes back then...Wampa Stompa!) on the N-64. I also enjoyed the first Force Unleashed game and Empire at War. I wouldn't say they were the best but I loved them.

Edit: Crap I forgot about Kotor, loved it too, though it was glitchy as all get out.

Knights of the old republic and the force unleashed

I'm ok with NGE, and pre-cu. It's still SWG to me :)

There's also these emulators if you own the game (they are legal):

Pre-cu (with JtL): swgemu.com

Pre-cu (but with NGE, JtL): projectswg.com (still in stress testing phase)

EDIT: note neither of these are completed yet, swgemu is in late alpha stages, JtL not functioning, but most ground elements are. ProjectSwg is in stress testing phase, so most aren't features aren't functioning, and JtL isn't functioning either.

I still remember the Trench Run from the original X-Wing. And seeing Vader's TIE Advanced flash up on the scanner... "Oh fuuuuuuuuuuuuu...."

Its easy to find abandonware copies of tie fighter, much harder to get them running as they require DOS that most Pcs dont use in the same way now... im a luddite.

All i know if i've got to much about a bit to get my copy working on this PC

Rebellion was hands down the greatest star wars game ever made...your advisor summed up the premise of the.game perfectly at the end of the intro..."the forces of the empire are yours to command." It put you in charge of the ENTIRE war effort, and having a fleet of Super star destroyers and multiple death stars led by thrawn Ozzel and piet move on that damned rebel base well

It also really showed you that as awesome as individuals can be (Darth vader was the best character in the game) they can only be in one place doing one thing at a time...there is a much wider war going on...

second best would be tie fighter followed by the original dark forces.

Empire at war was good and to me felt like rebellion light...more involved battles (on the ground anyway) but burns strategic...it did take it's cues from rebellion though. I enjoyed republic commando but found it far too easy...best it 3 days after opening...

Only reason I haven't gone back to replay is I have no joystick

Don't forget about Battlefront II. That was a fun game.
