Storing three factions

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

Since the inclusion of a third faction is going to end up being insane on the storage department, I've began thinking that I'll finally have to break down and store my HUGE ships somewhere else.... especially because at some point within the next fifteen years I expect to see an announcement on Imperial Huge Ships, which will even further increase my difficulty in storing EVERYTHING in one box.

So this is basically the Plano 1374 that I use,

1027379_1.jpg

I currently have Huge ships in the top area. Then the Four Drawers are as follows:

1: Tokens, Dice, Templates, Dmg Deck, (Stuff I need for every game)

2: Rebel Ships

3: Imperial Ships

4: Dials, Bases, and pegs.

Now drawer 4 is **** near full, and will NOT accept anything else at the moment, SOoooo I'm going to make drawer 4 my Scum drawer, and then move all the pegs and bases into a larger drawer which will fit into the top area. The only problem is that I won't have any transport method for my huge ships... but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it I suppose - especially since we don't have any idea on the dimensions or weather or not it'll be 1 or 2 Imperial huge ships... PLUS there might also be Scum Huge ships to consider.

Anyhow, are you guys planning out how to store an entire new faction yet?

Hey Crabbok!

I just moved off of my 1374... BattleFoam got me with their 25% sale but from my sig you can tell I didn't like it. While ok for minis (I hate that the mini catch on the foam), I found the cards/chit etc to be where it lacked, by the time I got a foam setup to work it seemed flimsy. At the end of the day the 720 didn't store enough and the next biggest was too big.

Back to the ol'trusty plano tray. IMO they are great, flexible to an ever changing collection, the 3750 tray specifically is perfect for both small, large (hopefully the VT will fit) ships.

So on to my solution, I found soft sided can be a good upgrade for the 1374.

My local fleet store had this one which holds 8 plano trays (and pockets are big enough to hold my mat and rules etc). Here: http://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/-magnum-softsided-tackle-bag/0000000002349

From what I have seen most are pretty much the same, mostly trays are stacked vertically but in the 8 tray above I was able to lay all but 1 horizontally. This vertical tray is my game tray, I keep it out during the games, holds dices, templates, astro, damage cards, focus/evade chits etc.

As for your HUGE ships... Plano makes a 3" deep open tray, I put 2" pluck foam in mine and did fit the CR90, Transport, bases, base cardboards and stands in one. Tight fit but don't play EPIC as often. Saving my other tray for imperial one day.

Cabella's has a "cabella" branded bad that holds 12 trays, expensive.

So before the new faction announcement, my setup was...

2 Rebal Trays

2 Imperial Trays

1 Game Tray

1 Rebel Huge Trays (1.5 normal tray height)

1 Imperial Huge Tray (1.5 normal tray height)

Total: 8 trays

Now with Wave 6, figure I can either tighten up my storage and free up a tray, or get another bag to hold huge. Heck even a duffle bag might work instead of spending even more money on the cabella's 12 tray bag. I also was thinking of just removing my imperial huge tray to fit S&V tray until an imperial huge is released.

I also have a 1374 and it is in danger of reaching its limit. I have been considering a second "Epic Box" to store the huge ships (I already have the Tantive stored separately in its original plastic) and probably some of the extra ships that I don't need for standard play (don't need all 9 interceptors, and I have never used all 8 TIEs at once, probably not even more than 5)

I think with some rearranging and sacrificing a little of the convenience of my current configuration I can fit wave 6 in but it's getting tough to store all the ships. If I had known the game was going to progress this far I probably would not have bought so many ships, I expected it would stop or at least slow way down after Wave 3 or 4

I am in the same boat as you Effenhoog... 9 interceptors lol... me too!!!!!!

5 X-wings...

I am slowing down completely... initially only got 2 of each wave 4 ship and honestly not that disappointed in that. I don't really feel the need to play more then one phantom anyway. Maybe more defenders in EPIC . E-wings look the same, no point in fielding more then 1 or 2.

I have this really weird and situational OCD thing. I have to have everything together for the most part. Like you I am thinking of just selling or decorating with some of my expansions like the interceptors to reduce clutter.

I really love my 1374 (though I am planning on replacing the existing drawers with Plano 3707's and pluck-foam). I suspect I'll just get another 1374 and do the same.

I"m using the Plano 1374 for my small & large ships as well.

The top drawer has 8 Ties, 2 Tie Adv., 6 Interceptors, 2 Firesprays, 2 Shuttles and all associated dials and ship tokens. The second drawer is currently housing 2 phantoms, 2 Defenders and 4 bombers + dials and tokens. I am hoping the decimator will fit in this tray as well.

The third drawer holds the bulk of my rebels, 6 x-wings, 2 Y-wings, 2 A-wings, 2 B-wings, 2 H-290s and 1 Falcon. I'm planning on adding the YT2400 to this tray. Last tray has 5 Z-95s and 2 E-wings.

I'll probably split scum and villany in between the second and fourth trays for now, with the smaller ships going in the 4th tray and the IG-2000 going in the second (if there's room).

In the top space I have an extra plano tray that I use to keep all of my range rulers, pegs and bases together. Along with dice, asteroids and damage deck. Then i have a smaller plano case for the tokens i need during play, and a number of smaller bead cases to hold id numbers and target locks, then one final case that holds mission specific tokens.

The top slots on the lid hold excess tokens for shields and such.

I keep my epic ships separate in a Plano Protector 4 pistol case: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P3WPKK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That comfortably holds 3 transports and 1 Tantive IV with all the associated bases, templates and tokens. Though I do remove the turrets and radar dish from the tantive when in storage. I don't mind having them in secondary storage since I only need them when we are planning on playing epic games.

Plano users: How are you keeping your ships from knocking around (if you are). ATM all my models are "loose" in the divided boxes. I don't think they'll break, but they do jostle (jossle? jossel?... They move around) quite a bit.

I've seen some folks use the blisters from the packaging but I apparently lack the imagination to get it to work quite right (hence my plan to replace my drawers with pluck foam).

I don't at least. My 1374 dropped form about 5' and the only thing that "broke" was the radar dish off my CR90 (it was just laying on top of my mat in the upper hold).

I am sure the paint could scratch and possibly a model could break if thrown or dropped enough. I personally am more worried about breakage then paint chips in balance with storing in as complete, compact and easy to use way possible.

Everyone has different priorities, I generally have weird priorities to others though.

Here is an example of my Rebel Tray #1

IMAG0114_zps0e5dc1fc.jpg

EDIT: Basically I try and reduce jossel as much as possible... sometime just piling ships in there like the A-wings... others like the X-Wings work pretty well standing up on their tail end.

Dankirk, I really like how you've got your dials and ship tokens separated. At present, all my ship tokens are stacked in their own section - Makes it really difficult to pull specific ships.

That is my own special kind of OCD... I really like to have all the parts together. It is less efficient in space usage though, especially if you have lots of single ships like 1 HWK only. Even if you only use the smallest slot possible in the tray it is sort of hard to get the dial and ship cardboard out. 2 slots gives my fat thumb room to get in there:)

I was playing around with the idea of mixing different single or low # ships. Like storing the dials/cardboard for both Y-wings and HWKs in the same "slot" since I could probably fit all the models in the same sized slot as well. My OCD will only allow me to do that if I am running out of space... and since I moved up to a 8 tray bag... that is not the case anymore.

I picked up a second Plano 1374. :)

I'm pretty close to maximum capacity for the top storage area of my first Plano as it is. When S&V hits, I'll put my huge ships in the second box along with the tray I use for huge ship tokens and dials, huge ship bases, mission-specific tokens and unused range rulers and maneuver templates. That'll free up one tray slot in Plano Prime, and a lot of room in the top storage, so I can add S&V ships.

Tray 1: For a little while anyway, I can probably fit all of the cards from the three factions in a single tray. The upgrade cards all fit nicely on their side edges, and I use loose plastic dividers to separate two or three types of upgrades in each "cup" area when possible.

Tray 2: All of my Rebel faction ship tokens, maneuver dials, pegs and bases.

Trays 3 and 4: Same, but for Empire and S&V.

So unless I'm planning to play Epic or a mission from the expansions, I can still bring just the one big Plano box for bulk supplies, along with the smaller red Plano 5231 "tourney carry-all" that carries everything I need for a tournament (general purpose tokens, damage decks, templates, assembled ships).

I keep them in the blisters, which I have cut down to be as small as possible, with flat plastic covers (also cut from the blister plastic) all rubber-banded to keep the unit together. I group my ships by type (sometimes more than one type) into ziplock bags (sandwich size), and keep them all in the top storage of the Plano 1374.

Interesting and completely different then I have heard before... Do you have any pics for reference?

I have no idea what I'm going to do. Actually Crabbok your video on storage got me to get the 1374 and I've been extremely pleased with it. I might come up with something for all the dials/tokens/stands and put them somewhere else so I have a free slot for S&V. We'll see how it goes...

In blister, with a plastic cover, held together with rubber bands.

one battle foam 720 for imperial one for rebs and a shield bag for scum unless they start getting "BIG" ships...

Awesome they are like xwing Easter eggs... always a prize inside!

Since the current S&V are repaints of Rebel ships I will put them with my character rebel slot and store the dials and bases in its own bag. The Bounty hunter ships I might just put with Imperials.

Just sharing. I kept all the blisters and made them fit by simply cutting. I plan to get one more case for rebel aces, yt2400 and SnV. The huge ships I did the same and put them in a tool box.

The ships don't budge or move and the cae doubles as a nice display case on the go as the cover is transparent. You can use the same method for any case I guess if you kept the blisters.

I'm still rocking the classic Plano 5231 box. This thing has held up through all of the waves, and if I clear out some of the tokens in the top (number chits and target locks, mostly) and the bases in the bottom (I really only need to keep sixteen with me, right? 8 max Imperial ships and 8 max Rebel ships?) I should be able to fit quite a few more ships in this sucker.

CrkVBwe.jpg

I keep all the tokens, templates, dice, and the damage deck in the top. I've never played a mission so I could stand to remove the mission tokens as well as the overstock on chits and locks for future ship storage.

T71uS63.jpg

Currently housing all of the ships in my sig. Each storage space contains the ship and the dial.

First row: Left to right: 3 X-Wings, 2 A-Wings, the B-Wing and the E-Wing bunk together, Imperial base tokens, Firespray

Second row: 2 TIE Fighters, TIE Bomber, TIE Advanced, B-Wing and HWK bunkin', Rebel base tokens,

Third row: 2 TIE Fighters, Interceptor, Interceptor, Interceptor, extra base tokens which could be moved to house Scum ships, the YT-1300 storage space currently holds the upgrade cards and the base tokens for the YT. My YT was damaged in battle and had to have the peg permanently glued into place so it no longer fits in this case and has to be stored separately.

Fourth row: TIE Defender and TIE Phantom bunk together, TIE Fighter and TIE Bomber bunk together, Lambda Shuttle fits perfectly in this spot even with the lid closed, but only in this position.

Bottom row: All base tiles and pegs except for the far right compartment which houses my 4 Headhunters and their dials.

So like a said, a bit of rearranging and I should have plenty of room in the top and bottom for more ships =)

My solution is the simplest of all.

My solution might accomodate wave 6 if I remake my foam. Currently I'm still using a solution I described over at BGG

Here is how it looks now with part of wave 4:

7bbuTTW.jpg

CKo7k31.jpg

For upgrade cards I use pocket pages for easy access (it also fits in the suitcase):

hgqRdfC.jpg

It holds 5X 2A 3B 2Y 1HWK 1MF 2 BH 4 Tie Interceptors 2 Tie Advanced 4 Tie Bombers 1 Phantom 2 Defenders 1 Shuttle 7 Tie Fighters with room to spare on the first level of foam, and I still use the second level for dials and tokens, haven't yet put any ships there. For now I've kept Epic ships separately, I could easily squeeze in The transport and rebel wave 4. If I rearrange the fighters for a new foam layout I could put in more ships, but I don't think I can ever fit the CR90 in there.
