Hero houses and more

By DomaGB, in Talisman

Since 0beron posted and mentioned on the rules forum that it wasn't the right place, I thought I would bring it up here.

I like the idea of hero houses, sorta reminds me of the Bank in EverQuest, or the Chest you can store stuff in, in Dragon Age Origins.

It could be 1 space, and everyone can store stuff in the same space but is totally safe from other players.

I would not be opposed for an expansion that allowed some sort of 1 time thievery through an Adventure card.

And making it a bank where you can also store gold would be nice. 2nd edition had a bank, and you could get loans. 4th doesn't have a bank does it? I don't remember all the shops off hand.

But this could be a house ruled also. Could make the jail location a duel purpose spot and access the bank from that corner. But an official expansion would be nice, but as others have shared the likelihood of having an expansion for an expansion is low.

As for a brothel, I doubt it would ever happen. In my brief discussion and input about deities, I stated that I think they were refraining from this to be less offensive to some players. I made note of the change of the appearance of the Harpy as an example. 2nd edition Harpy was naked, 4th edition is not. I don't think they would put in a brothel for the same reasons.

BTW, since I mentioned shops and such in the City, here is a humorous game situation. 2 games ago I bought a Warhorse, before even leaving the shop it was stolen. :o In the last game I played I bought a Flail. Again before leaving the shop it was stolen. I wanted to argue with the shop keeper for getting my money back! It was actually quite humorous and everyone laughed.

It's ok in games where you can return to your home or base camp in any moment or with Spells; in Talisman having to land on a certain space can be challenging at times, so I won't be so eager to have a place where to store unused Objects in. It doesn't work well with the mechanic that instructs to ditch surplus Objects as soon as you acquire new Objects you wish to keep.

If a character were able to store things at home at any time and from any place, it would be overpowered and very "game-ish", but I can't see any other way to make it useful.

There's no bank or such in the 4th edition. It's a pre-financial fantasy word: if you want money there's a Pawnshop in the City, otherwise you go to the Alchemist that turns stuff into gold. A banking system would crash very soon in a world where Alchemy is readily available to everyone. :D

Stashing gold won't be so interesting for gaming purposes, as it doesn't take room in inventory and is rarely stolen by other characters (barring the Rogue and Generosity Spell, I've rarely seen people engaging in combat for gold). Moreover, the game has limited resources, so putting gold where it cannot be spent or taken only reduces the available stockpile. Bank Loans could be an addition to the City expansion, but I think that Wanted Posters are a more thematic way to gain gold and were designed exactly to replace 2nd edition Bank Loans.

I still have hopes for an expansion of all expansions, since there are small things to fix here and there and possibilities to expand many existing mechanics. Moreover, cards could be added to connect corners with other corners, or to extend interesting rules from an expansion to other expansions. For example Lycanthropy, Fireland Tokens, Terrain Cards, fatebound cards like the ones in the Woodland could be introduced in the other corner expansions and/or in the Adventure deck.

Besides the offensiveness of some images and content, I think there's the will to keep Talisman 4th edition as a family game, with a generic fantasy setting utopically free of disturbing content, sexual references and real life issues too. This is typical of many games, as including certain elements requires the highest care, i.e. explicit violence and sex, or a big effort for a really poor result, like introducing the character's need for food, sleep, clothing, standard equipment, social life and family. Probably there's no need for anything like this in Talisman, but others might have different ideas.

Its easy to get in a shop, so I don't see a problem having a bank there. If it weren't a shop I'd agree with you. I do agree it wouldn't solve ditching problems, but we don't want to play with kid gloves, it wouldn't be any fun.

A bank would be a nice place to store an early gotten Talisman!

I really don't remember the extent of my idea, as originally posted before The City came out.

But I suppose a 'stranger' card that designates a traveling money lender/storer, perhaps even similar to Reaper/Werewolf, in that he/it is a constant - not able to be taken from the board.

But it still presents mechanic considerations like you're both mentioning. Perhaps he is limited to only move around the Middle region - why would a bank person go into the Dungeon or Forest (unless.... he has Assistants who can do that for purposes of plunder - but this sounds more like a while small expansion or home brew or POD concept, not that it couldn't work.

Habitats, whether for storage or rest/healing could be special new tokens, perhaps each game the players can choose where they go, 3 or 4 of them. Again I don't think they logically go into Dungeons, etc.

It's probably easier to use each character's starting space, and have a marker card that a player can use to denote which items in his play area is "stored" there.

I had a small idea in a similar vein some time ago about starting spaces, in that a character could rest there for a turn to heal or train in one of his attributes.

Well, perhaps, in a similar vein, I had this other idea, more recently.

A follower/type, possibly called the Weapons-Man, who can be used as a way of carrying/organizing all your weapons. Sure we have horses, mules etc. But the Weapons - Man, if your follower can also + 1 to Craft or Strength (he can carry magic weapons too, perhaps), or if not that, perhaps he can allow an extra turn or encounter (sorta like Fate in a Man!), provided once a turn and a caveat that you can switch to a different weapon. An extra ability would be that he can fight with you (strength only?) and add +2 to the total.

Still not very thought out, but I like the idea of a valet, sorta, to carry and help with your weapons.

double post, sorry!

Maybe have every character start the game with a Hearth Rune, so there's at least one time per game they can teleport back to their home space, assuming you wanted to use the starting space for caching objects, healing, training, etc.

Since you have to ditch the Hearth Rune on the space you're leaving, it would then be available for anyone to scoop up if they happen to land on your previous space.
