Close proximity, capital ships, and stand in bases

By Papa Midnight, in Star Wars: Armada

Will it be neccessary to build or purchase ship bases for the purposes of having "free" bases to use as a stand in for ships when/if capital ships get too close to one another on the gaming board?

Conversely, are there any capital ships that are wider or longer than their base?

I imagine that would be really, really rare at least with the bigger ships. In the Return of the Jedi novelization whe Lando tells Ackbar to close to point blank range with the Imperial fleet so the Death Star II can't hit the Rebels without destroying Imperial ships as well Ackbar mentions that no one has ever fought at that close of a range with vessels the size of MC80s and Imperial Star Destroyers before.

Ever play X-Wing? It is very rare and the ships come off the bases.

No need for extra bases.

Yeah, even if you overlap you don't actually put bases on each other or anything. Plus the ships seem to be smaller then the bases, so you could have the bases touching but the ships shouldn't.

Actually what Ackbar says is "At that close range we won't last long" implying that the star destroyers were going to be doing more damage to the mon cal cruisers than they could do dish back. One could infer from that statement that no one had ever taken mon cals to point blank range vs ISD's but there's not a lot of evidence to support that based strictly on dialog.

It is far more likely that he said it not because they were unable to contend with imperial Cap ships than they were just horrendously outnumbered.
