Maximum number of each ship that you need

By Omnitron310, in X-Wing

Hey there. I was just wondering what, in your guys' opinions, is the maximum amount of each ship that you could ever need? I want to 'complete' my collection, and by that I mean, have enough ships of each sort that I can pretty much run any list I want. That said, I don't think I'd ever want to run a list of, say, 6 naked TIE Bombers, so I don't think I'd ever need that many. So, what in your opinion is the 'perfect' amount of ships to have to be able to run any decent list you want?

Well in a 100 point game you cant field more than 8 TIE/ln at 12 points each so thats one max

You'll never get more than 4 x wings in either.

Are we talking std 100pt lists only or be able to run what you want in epic too? And what faction(s) you running?

Tru dat. A simple method is calculate the maximum number of the cheapest pilot of each ship for the game (std/epic) you're planning on playing. Realistically though I doubt you'll find yourself fielding the maximum number of a single ship type very often - especially more specialist ships like advanced, bombers, a wings, HWKs etc (if you did fancy trying it it would probably be more sensible to own what you're likely to run and borrow the few extra needed if you do ever feel like going nuts for one ship type

(Bear in mind in epic the maximum number of any small ship you can field is 12 so that'd always be your ultimate ceiling if you ever went mad enough to go for it)

My thoughts on the MAX you'd ever need.

X-wing: 4

Y-wing: 4 (you need ion turrets to be any good)

A-wing: 5 (I guess you could run more with Chardaan refit)

Falcon: 3 (3 ORS w/ APL)

B-wing: 4

Hwk: 2 (you can run more, but it's diminishing returns after that)

E-wing: 3

Z-95: 8

Outrider: 3? Probably 2 at most.

Fighter: 8

Advanced: 1 (Really Vader is it)

Interceptor: 4 (4 Royal Guards)

Slave 1: 3

Bomber: 5 (5 Gammas w/ Seismics)

Lambda: 4

Defender: 3

Phantom: 2 (you could run 3 all with upgrades, though)

Decimator: 2

I take it you like your large ships Red? I've never run more than 2 of any large ship at one time yet...

Aside from that I'm right with you...

I think the question you have to ask yourself is do you plan to play tournaments, or are you looking to create interesting games (and yes I believe most tournament games are boring as hell because of the lists used). Tournament players are squeezing the math and trying to find the breaking points, so they build lists based on maximizing the mathwing for the current meta (which is constantly changing), which I'm not going to claim is not fun for them, I'm sure it is, but as a gamer many of the lists being used in tournaments are just boring to play and to play against. I mean I just watched a Tie Fighter Swarm vs. Z95 swarm and I almost fell asleep. It was basically a dice fest match that was decided at the end of round 2 shooting phase. Can the Z95's kill Howl Runner? if yes, he wins, if no, he loses. Basically what the whole match boiled down to.

I think in this Gencon the game has clearly shown its growth a great deal in tournament play which I think is great, mostly thanks to the variety of ships and upgrades available lists are becoming more and more diversified and can be competitive with greater variety but I still think the default "100 point duel" is the most boring way to play.

If you create and play scenarios (or find interesting scenarios) you will find your lists to be very dynamic, responding to the needs of the scenario which I think make the games more fun. Many scenarios have varied points as well rather then the standard 100. This however requires a larger variety and mixture of ships which I think is actually a more expensive way to play the game, but frankly more fun in my opinion.

I think the trick to buying ships initially is to buy 2 or 3 of everything so that you have the diversity and then as you build lists if you find your constantly reaching for something you don't have then you know you need to buy more, but I think by buying 2-3 of each ship you are going to use the ships in lists. For example for me personally I initially bought one Z95, then when I started building lists I found I always found room for more so I ended up buy 5 of them and I think I will use them quite often. On the flip side, I don't see myself ever running more then 1 falcon or Decimator for example, focused big ship lists are probably effective but boring as hell to play and to play against.

One thing I found among my gaming group is that people tend to fly any given list only once or twice, typically unless they find they really love how a specific list flies half the fun of a game session is coming up with something new and cool to run... and having lots of ships is necessary to have that freedom.

I'm too cheap to buy more than one, but there are popular lists that use the max number of large ships possible. Well, they might not be "popular" lists, but I'm a big fan of all of SableGryphon's lists, and he's done the 5 Bombers, multiple Lambdas, and 3 Falcons. Then you have 3 Bounty Hunters as a strong tournament list, and 3 Defenders might work similarly. People run double Falcon (Lando & Chewie), so I bet 2x Decimator and 2x Outrider will be somewhat common.

I think the máximum give you the size of your wallet, but the mínimum depends of the máximum that the lowest pilot gives you in a squad of full ships of that, so X-wing is 4, TIE Fighters is 8, and go on, greettings.

in a perfect world

12 of each small

6 of each large

2 transpots

1 corvette

and 1 of everything to put on the shelf :D

You need 12 TIEs for a proper swarm :)

IG-2000 = 4

3 transports, as one of the missions calls for 3. I personally think it's overkill, but there you go.

Because of current and future ace expansion I would hold off on buying more than one of any expansion unless you REALLY want a lot of a certain ship type.

If you bought one of everything out right now you would have

3 X-Wings

1 Y-Wing (2 after wave 6)

2 A-Wings

2 B-Wings

1 Z-95 (3 after wave 6)

1 E-Wing

1 HWK

1 Falcon

1 Outrider

3 Tie Fighters

1 Tie Advanced

3 Tie Interceptors

1 Tie Bomber

1 Tie Defender

1 Tie Phantom

1 Shuttle

1 Decimator

That's a ton of combinations you can do.

Hey guys. Thanks for the responses. I guess it would make sense to say what I currently have. I started out playing Imps, but once I got all of their current models, I started getting Rebels too. Currently, I have:

Imperials:

8x TIE Fighter

4x TIE Interceptor (2 of which are the 2 from Imperial Aces)

2x TIE Bomber

1x TIE Advanced

1x TIE Phantom

1x TIE Defender

1x Lambda Shuttle

1x Firespray

Rebels:

1x X-Wing (from core set)

1x Y-Wing

1x A-Wing

1x B-Wing

1x HWK

1x E-Wing

1x Headhunter

1x Corvette

So, the only currently released sets that I am missing are the X-Wing expansion, Falcon, and Rebel Transport. I know that one way to 'complete' a collection is just to see how many of the minimum points cost pilots for a certain ship you can fit into a list is, and just buy that many, but that seems like overkill on some lists. Like I said earlier, I doubt for example that I would want to run a list consisting entirely of naked bombers. That's why I wanted people's opinions on how many ships of each type you may really need.

I think I'll hold off on buying extra A-Wings or B-Wings, since Rebel Aces is just around the corner. Similarly for Y-Wings and Headhunters as I can get more of them with S&V. For the other ships though, how many more do you think? I agree that 2 is probably a good base number for most ships (except for like TIEs and Interceptors, which I already have more of).

There is a similar post talking about 100 point limits. Then again here is the reply I gave because it fits this post perfectly.

100 points is not the total limit. You can play with 200 points you just have to agree on a point limit when you play against another person. Just for most tournaments and league play they cap it at 100 as a standard. There really is no limit. But at the 100 point limit here is the maximum number of the same model you can field.

A-Wing 5 (6 with Chardaan Refit)

B-Wing 4

E-Wing 3

X-Wing 4

Y-Wing 5

Z-95 8

HWK-290 6

YT-1300 3

YT-2400 3

Tie Fighter 8

Tie Advanced 4

Tie Bomber 6

Tie Interceptor 5

Tie Defender 3

Tie Phantom 4

Lambda Shuttle 4

Firespray-31 3

VT-49 Decimator 2

Now these list will probably not be as competitive (although the Sigma Squadron might be fun with 4 phantoms.) I see allot that get 2 of everything (4 for the Z95s) and call it good and they end up with a flexible selection for their squadron. 100 points is not the exact limit, you can play with more or less depending on how long of a match you want.

Will you be just buying for yourself or will you be fielding lists for visitors as well?

Will you be just buying for yourself or will you be fielding lists for visitors as well?

Get 2 core sets, and get 2 expansion packs for each side (using counterparts such as A-wing & Interceptor or B-wing & Bomber) and you will have everything you need for 2 players to play a fun and competitive game.

well. you could one day be playing an epic match where you want the maximum possible ships... but against the same faction cuz your buddy wanted to play it too and he doesn't have any ships...

so, 24 of each is a good starting point.

But if you played campaigns where you create squadrons for your friends and each squadron has 12 of each type of ship, and you can have multi-squadron battles... id multiply 12 by the number of imaginary friends you have.

Also any competent fool has a minimum of 4 HWKs. I mean. What if you wanted to run 2 ion-ers and 2 blaster turret-ers? Are you REALLY all about list diversity or is that just a convenient excuse for the fact that you're still living in your mom's basement and still use Fel's Wrath after 30 games?

Do you know what you should do if you have too much money? Grow carrots. Builds character. The meaning of life is there.

I'm starting to think there may be no upper limit...
