EPVII tech/ship/timeline progression

By Gadge, in X-Wing

Being a bit lazy here as its late in the UK (well it is when you've been up real early and busy all day)...

Does anyone know when epVII is set , as in years past RotJ as i've just read that Hamill, Fisher and Ford will be reprising their roles so it's got to be at least 20 years as Mark Hammill is like 60 odd now and Ford must be nearly 70.... make up and cgi can only do so much

Have they stated anywhere when its set. If the original heroes are back and playing anything like their own age then the current pics of 'evolved' trooper armour make loads of sense if its 30 to 40 years on from the battle of endor.

Likewise it will be interesting if they take EU 'prototype' and experimental ships like the phantom and defender that are quite well known because of the games and run with them in the films?

1. the universal measure of time is Battle of Yavin, not Endor. It's 30 ABY, which means 26 years after the battle of endor.

2. the Defender is NOT an experimental ship. The only experimental ship in the game at this point is the Phantom. (srry I'm a nerd so when people don't know what they're talking about, it drives me nuts :P). Well actually you could consider the Firespray experimental as well I guess.

Yeah ok, but im talking from a film perspective here.

I'm asking how many years is it after Endor? Thanks for answering that as that was the question.

Given that both TIE ships mentioned by me are not actually canon they would be 'new'/'experimental' in film terms.

Bit rude to say 'dont know what i'm talking about'

I'm just being a bit more pragmatic and less obsessive perhaps? :)

I use Yoda's Datapad for my book chronology, and they state that the novelization of Episode 7 is set ~34 years after the battle of Yavin IV.

The battle of Endor occurred 4 years after Yavin, for reference.

No offense intended. I wouldn't surprised (but I wouldn't get my hopes up) if Eu ships show up in the movies, since they showed up in the game AFTER Disney bought Lucasfilms. I wouldn't get my hopes up though. I doubt the Defender would be a prototype, because it entered major production directly after Endor. (and was a prototype/non-mainstream fighter during Endor)

btw, nothing is not canon. Legends IS the canon for me. (unless Disney makes something super amazing, which is a 99.9% impossibility) :)

The EU is canon. I don't care what Osik Disney pulls out of their butt, the EU is canon.

AMEN BROTHER

Technically, the Legends EU is its own canon, and Disney's new EU is just an alternative canon. :P It will be tough for Disney's EU to usurp my fond memories of Legends.

Yes! Especially considering the fact that everything disney has done recently has been awful (except Tangled).

Well Monsters University was a worthy sequel to Monsters Inc. .......

Think of the X-wing, and Thrawn Trilogy, and the video games people, we can't abandon them! (and if you're more adventurous like me, think of NJO and beyond!)

Oh please, people. They'll take all the good elements and leave all the bad ones out.

For instance. We might see thrawn, but never the Vong. I could not be happier.

they won't. It's Disney. The Vong weren't bad. I hate Disney.

Ok. As an oldster who hasnt read any of the EU except for the Han Solo trilogy and Splinter of the minds eye. And also doesnt want to read about the Vong ( If i want that ill just watch Gunbuster) and couldnt get into the X Wing rogue squadron series, not that im averse to fighter combat but at least the first one i thought was badly written. But is curious about what the big deal is What would you suggest i start with?

Heir to the Empire (thrawn trilogy) is great. X-wing is great. Try the Aaron Allston ones (you'll miss some story, but all the Rogue Squadron ones are written in the same format.)

Also, why would you NOT want to read about the Vong? The common misconception is, people who didn't like the books, tend to make them out as horrific, and it chasers other readers off. If you never read the books, you can't dislike what's in them.

As I was told, disney had put all EU in a big bag and trown it to the sea....

Respectfully disagree. Frozen was amazing. Brave was highly enjoyable- though my wife loved it to bits.

And the Marvel movies that Disney have done (the Avengers line of movies, and Guardians of the Galaxy. _Not_ the X-Men, nor the Spiderman movies) have been at least entertaining, with some being downright excellent.

Tastes differ, of course, but if New Star Wars can be as entertaining as Guardians of the Galaxy or Thor, I'll be a happy man.

All I know about the Vong books is after reading every Star Wars book I could, a couple books into the Vong made me stop reading any EU at all, they were that derailing of the universe.

Didn't everyone stop caring about cannon vs non-cannon with the prequels? I don't know about you guys but that garbage isn't cannon as far as I'm concerned. Why would the sequel trilogy be any different. If you like it/its good, think of it as cannon, otherwise, ignore it.

(rampant speculation)

Part of the reason the EU got tossed into the "Legends" was A) to create space for more stories, but perhaps mostly B) JJ didn't want to have to deal with learning about all the years of story that he would be bound to. I do know that the other writers working on the new stuff are much more in tune with the Legacy material- Someone wrote the Z-95 into Clone Wars, after all.

So I have this feeling that JJ will do what JJ will do, but there's a chance we'll get to see a prototype Defender written into Rebels. Maybe not exactly as powerful (or durable?) as you might think it should be, but still present as a testbed.

And come to think of it: Mara Jade would be an _excellent_ recurring character in Rebels.

Then there are people like Gary Whitta. He's writing one of the non-numbered future Star Wars movies. He's one of the founders of PC Magazine. I can't say for certain, but I'm guessing a guy with that kind of background has played Tie Fighter and KotOR- among others. Knowing that he'll have a chance to reach into the "Legends" canon and rescue something for general use would be enormously attractive. I'll bet it will happen.

Also: Kieron Gillen- dude who founded Rock Paper Shotgun- will be writing the Darth Vader comic. Dude has talked enough about having enjoyed Tie Fighter, and gave KotOR a 9/10 (which is a great score from Eurogamer.)

In fact, here's a direct quote from Gillen "The Lucas people have put those other stories under their 'Legends' banner. So I'm free to take stuff that we find interesting and want to reintroduce, but I'm not constrained by that." (http://goo.gl/lpu0nd This article makes me want to read his line of books _so badly_!) I think if he sees any favorite bits of his that are about to fall out of canon, he might well reach in and rescue it. His favorite might not be your favorite, but it might be, too.

So TL; DR: there are some good people who love Star Wars- and have had a similar experience with Star Wars as we have- doing interesting work in the new canon. We won't have identical stories, but I'll bet that some of our past favorites will show up with all new stories. I'm ok with that.

It is just that everything i have read about the Vong just sounds a bit forced . Maybe it is a good series but i dont know..Perhaps after i try Thrawn ill give it a go. I tend to read constantly so finding time to fit somehting new is always a challenge

I'm personally quite torn with EU stuff.

I think i wierdly like stuff i've seen i the films, stuff in computer games (like i dont mind the phantom and defender as they were in 'tie fighter') and I don't mind stuff from the old west end games RPG.

Probably because i grew up with all this.

I didnt read the comics and novels so all of that i've never really bought into.

Except mara jade who was in the fighting game on playstation one 'master of terai kaasi. (sp) She was cool.

Start with Republic Commando. Then the X-wing books (all of them), and the Thrawn Trilogy.

I'm curious, does anyone believe that if Lucas hadn't sold to Disney, that Episode VII would have faithfully recreated whatever was in the books, instead of doing something entirely new?

I have a hard time blaming Disney for this.
