Lists that everyone should try?

By Kaudia, in X-Wing

So my brothers and I love playing this game and it can be death by a million cards for beginners.

It got me thinking...Anyone care to share their feelings on the top three 100 pt lists regardless of faction that everyone should try at least once? (i.e. Swarm, HSF, Rebel Convoy)

I know these can differ slightly in construction, but trying to come up with different feeling lists that are common. Thanks in advance!

One list I think everyone should definitely give a try is the Untouchables. Not only is it very fun to fly but getting a grip on it will make you a better player IMO.

The Untouchables

T/P - Echo - ACD, VI, Advanced Sensors, Navigator

T/I - Soontir Fel - PTL

T/I - Turr Phennir - VI

That's only 97pts of it as well; flavour to taste, or change Echo to Whisper if you prefer the more aggressive approach than Echo's extra maneuverability.

What I'd say are common lists. Just picking three is virtually impossible.

HSF

Swarm

Three Amigos

Four Rebels (X-Wings and B-Wings)

Royal Guard PtL x4

I guess that adds three to the list.

I'd suggest some classic lists from the beginnings that are still very much viable today.

1. TIE swarm of your choice. 6+ TIE's, probably with Howlrunner. It is very educational for both players to understand how to fight swarms better (and how to use swarms if need be).

2. 4 Rebels, preferably X-wings. A classic 4 X wing list such as Wedge, Garvin (or Biggs), Rookie, Rookie. Another classic, that still does fairly well today. You can swap out for Y-wings or B-wings as you like. A-wings change the feel a little bit. Also good to learn how to fight Biggs, as he can be a pain.

3. Interceptors. Now that you've tried the swarm and 4 ship Rebels, the formation and joust kings, definitely try your hand at a 3 or 4 interceptor build. This can include Fel with upgrades, Royal Guard Pilots, and even a shuttle or TIE fighter to fill the 3rd or 4th ship if you need to. This will let you get a feel for the first "arc-dodgers" flanking style list with above average pilot skill.

The swarm and the 4 ship rebels were king when players were more inclined to hit in one large engagement, inflicting maximum damage, and then the battle dissolves into smaller dogfights. One is the imperial solution, one the Rebels', both are very different and good for learning. The Interceptors are the link between the joust meta and then increasing favor for flanking and smaller, higher PS builds. The release of the Phantom and anti-Phantom weaponry supposedly made interceptors less useful, but still good to learn how they fly. Now there are even more options for competitive lists, but things like Falcons + Z's and Phantoms + miniswarms are now top. However, for example, the Phantom list uses techniques learned in previous waves' classic lists. You have a smaller, albeit deadly swarm that is flown the same way with Howlrunner alongside a Super-Interceptor that is even harder to catch and kill.

Everyone should fly four Green Squadron Pilots at least once in their life.

Some great comments so far. EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thanks.

I hear you, StevenO. Too many to list, right? We just want to get the feel of lists that are markedly different, yet competitive anyway. Thanks for the input!

Everyone should fly four Green Squadron Pilots at least once in their life.

Granted, they are prototypes, but I LOVE Slap Fight for probably the same reason.

4 prototype A's and an ORS. (Now new and improved Slap Fight with chardaan refits for extra upgrades like c-3po, gunner, etc on the YT!).

I might say BlockORS or Bounty Hunters but I'm not sure how easy they are for "everyone to try" as each is using three Large Ships. Trying out a herd of Space Cows (multiple Shuttles) can also be an eye opening experience.

While I'm on the topic of large ships I guess we should mention double Falcons and perhaps even Falcon Fortress which some people seem to blow a gasket when it's mentioned. After you've "flown" Falcon Fortress a couple times you'll learn why people hate it and also how do defeat it without going into a rage.

This isn't a complete list, but everyone should try DareVader at least once.

Vader with Engine Upgrade and Daredevil. Would be a great platform for Proton Rockets!

What's your favorite double falcon build?

An all Ion list for sure, either 4 Ys with Ion Turrets or 4 Bs with cannons or a mix of the two. 3 Defenders with Ions are an option as well but that's 25% less ions than 4 ships so...

3 Bounty hunters

What is the 3 Amigos list?

What is the 3 Amigos list?

Any list containing Biggs, Luke and Wedge

Gotcha. Basically 3 named XWing pilots I guess. Faced a Wes/Wedge/Biggs list...man it works really well.

What is the 3 Amigos list?

As noted it's specifically a version of three X-Wings with Wedge, Luke, and Biggs although many three unique X-Wings could also work.

I love ABYX

Imps I like:

Soontir Fel

Turr Phennir

(might have missed a PtL on Phennir, I don't have the point values in front of me)

Something to suggest for the 2 of you:

Create 6 lists, label them A, B, C, etc.

Player 1 has list A, and player 2 has list B.

Play game.

Next game: player 1 has list B and player 2 has list C.

Play game.

Keep rotating.

This give both of you a lot of experience with a lot of different lists, playing both with and against those lists.

Oh! And as far as lists go. Here's a good page from (I think) Wave 3 that has some nice beginner options.: http://goo.gl/5vBGmv

What is the 3 Amigos list?

Any list containing Biggs, Luke and Wedge

False. Biggs, Luke, and Wedge is the Trench Run Trio. 3 Amigos means three ships, could be anything.

Thanks, everyone.

I always thought 3 Amigos were: Vader, Soontir Fel, Turr Fennir

That's more likely the 999 list.

I've heard Biggs, Luke, and Wedge called both of those. Anyway its the list I ran when I finally got my first win. Its a decent list but it won't win any tourneys nowadays.
