I've been debating picking up a second one, but it's a fair bit of cash for just the units that would fun to have more of (the 2 Legend units, certainly, a couple more Elites could be fun, but I don't really need more Infantry or Cavalry). I can imagine a few 2-board variants, too, and a few extra Lore and VP markers would be nice, but it doesn't seem quite worth it - has anyone tried it out? Obviously 2 Chaos Lords would be terrifying, but there's a lot of not-so-useful duplicates too (and I alredy bought the Dice Pack, so I'm more than good on dice).
Has anyone played with a second base set?
I'd suggest to get the two new expansions first, and then decide.
Both exp will include new Legend units, and will give the game quite a greater depth. At that point, you can decide better if you want more or you're happy as it is. If you want more choice, the epansions should be enough. If you want a bigger game with two boards in and so on, beware it could last for quite a while and, in my opinion, such games are not the best in BT2: if you want such an epic scale, go with Battles of Westeros (much more detailed rules, a lot more stuff to consider, and scenarios including tons of stuff). Battlelore's greatness is that it is incredibly agile yet deep.
Just my two cents, anyway.
Thanks! Fair points, all of them. I also appreciate the tighter knife fight of BE2, too, but I suppose I was trying to think of ways to rationalize buying that whole box just for - essentially! - a second Chaos Lord and Roc Warrior. Can't wait for the expansions!
If you just want the two minis, there are probably people over the BGG selling spare parts (it happens for many games, from X-Wing to Mansions of Madness), so that maybe you can have the two minis you're interested in without having to blow 80 bucks for a second copy of the core set
I dove in and got 2 base sets. Someday I hope to try out an epic format using both map boards, but otherwise to be honest the additional figures aren't that useful. I've really only felt limited by:
Citadel Guards - 5 isn't bad, but I sometimes want more, especially that one scenario where they only cost 3 points.
Rune Golems - I think these are excellent units and only having 2 is limiting. For the scenario where you need one on a hill, or any scenario where they can be used to occupy buildings or other terrain they're great to have.
Flesh Ripper Brutes - Like Citadel Guards, 3 isn't bad, but they're strong units and having more can be nice.
That's not a lot to justify a 2nd set, especially knowing more choices are coming. I did 2 Chaos Lords once and neither accomplished anything.
Awesome - thanks for the report! An epic 2-board game does sound like a fun experiment, but the game seems to be very much balanced for the dimensions its normally fought in. When we were speculating about it, we were debating between playing 2 command cards - one for each of the left board and the right board - or playing one command card that doubled the lane widths (Left is 1&2, Center is 3&4, Right is 5&6). Maybe if I ever see it for under $40 I'll snag a second? Even if 2 Chaos Lords is functionally terrible, just having them on the board would be a lot of fun!
I feel quite happy with just one base set. In my opinion:
1. Having constraints on the number of units of a specific type is, in my opinion, a plus. Constraints make choices more interesting. I know I can have at most five citadels guards and I live with it, it is part of the game and I have to find some alternative.
2. With the expansions, there will be plenty of units to vary the army composition a lot, and it will be possible to deploy two legends.
3. If you feel the lack of some units in particular and you and your friends don't mind, you could use some proxies (e.g. take some giant monster from some other random fantasy wargame and use it as a chaos lord).
I'd suggest to get the two new expansions first, and then decide.
Expansions?
Yeah - there's 2 new expansions forthcoming: Daqan Lords - Guardians of Hernfar , and Uthuk Y'llan - Warband of Scorn . FFG hasn't posted anything on here yet, though.
