Dear FFG

By UndefeatedAce, in X-Wing

First off I'd like say that the game "Star Wars X Wing miniatures" is amazing. Simple as that.

It has all of your favorite pilots, iconic ships, special abilities, upgrades, combos, and enough strategy to satisfy even the most avid of Star Wars gamers.

When you guys introduced the epic format alongside epic ships, my heart skipped a beat.

We had the greatest game ever, now with the added option of massive space battles with huge command ships, fighting alongside you.

I could go on for hours, but to make it short and sweet,

it was disappointing that we got nothing for Imperial epic.

(I understand that no one can please everyone, its a fact of life)

But if it's something you guys have in the works, could you make an announcement for it or even a teaser post showing a single upgrade card that reads "Imperial huge ship only".

We, but more specifically I, need something, anything, to keep my hopes up, & the dream of one day flying Rexlar Brath, Soontir Fel, and everyone else alongside a imperial epic ship.

If not, even a post stating you have no intentions of making one, would help. That way I can at least move on and stop thinking about it.

Trust me, if you made it, it would sell. In my small x-wing group alone, I know of at least 30 people who would buy it instantly.

Thank you for your time and thanks again for this awesome game.

"he will learn patience"

I know. It just sucks. I thought for sure we would get some kind of hint about it. Rebels have had theirs out for several months now, & we have wave 5 & rebel aces soon to be out. I thought this would be the next in line.

But as you all said, patience is a virtue, & good things come to those who wait. So wait I shall.

Dear FFG:

You're making an awesome game in X-Wing, with lots of cool options for us. Keep it up.

I'm guessing that most of your primary design staff is at one of the biggest game conventions on the planet right now, and you've been planning for months so that everything happens with only minimal problems there. Good on you! Your staff looks like they're having loads of fun and their enthusiasm for your product is shining through.

Thanks for playing the "long game" in production design with X-Wing, and now that you have what I believe you called your best-selling game of all time with X-Wing, you feel it's safe now to branch out into other aspects of the Star Wars, and game design, universe. Very exciting times indeed.

Keep it up. Most of us are cheering for every release that you're bringing out. I'm super excited about the announcements thus far at GenCon 2014.

Keep flying casual!

I think you should be happy that they are using thousands of Rebel players as play-testers to work out the unforeseen kinks in the Huge ship meta, and using all of that experience and data to make the best Imperial Huge ships they can. Being a bit of a perfection is and detail oriented I believe the Rebel Huge ships could have been better, so the more time they take with the Imperial Huge ships the more assured I am that they are perfecting them and they will be the best that they can be.

(weird, I got this odd feeling of deja vu after rereading that.)

I know it's not much consolation now,

but I think you should take heart that a lot of us, even rebel players,

believe they can't possibly not be working on them.

It's less than three months since the CR90 was released.

I'm also impatient by nature. I kept my guesses to myself, but was probably more confident than most that we'd see an announcement about Imperial Epic play--and therefore very surprised not to hear anything about it yesterday. But "not yesterday" is not the same as "never", so I'd urge everyone who's waiting for Huge stuff for the Empire to take a deep breath, remember it's just a game, and keep your fingers crossed that we'll hear something in time to put it on our holiday wish lists.

Is that bent?

Holy crap.....are the Victorys engines actually going to be shipped PREPAINTED?

i wonder if FFG simply waited for the imperial big ship release so that folks would go for armada instead or is it a simple fact that the iconic imperial big ships would have to be scaled down to much??

Expect an imperial huge, hopefully with an interceptor and bomber escort, with a CR-90 "conversion kit" for empire.

I didn't put an advanced in there in hope that they get a full aces treatment of thier own.

And then there's the question no one has asked...what about Scum and Villainy Epic ships?

Yeah, the news said capital ships were prepainted, IIRC

And then there's the question no one has asked...what about Scum and Villainy Epic ships?

I was thinking about that this morning. If they go on with the Epic line, they should released Epic also for the third faction (and for any further faction they could be wantng to release).

Not that this means bad, uh?

I want a Mon Calamari huge ship so bad...

This actually makes sense, & makes me feel at peace. :-) Thank you.

Like you said, with the rebels, we are finding out what works & what doesn't. What we like & don't like. Plus the fact that most things that the imperials had, were always bigger & better. Or if they weren't, they just swarmed.

Plus those pictures you posted also seem right. What if they are using Armada as an extra info & playtesting resource. To get the looks just right, & fine tune the controls & stats.

That's awesome. I was honestly really bummed about it but now I'm excited & have high hopes again.

Plus with all of these new games out, I can have fun while I'm waiting lol! Sweet!

Thanks for that comment! :-)

Did anyone ask about Imperial Huge Ships during the Q&A?

I think its safe to say that there will surely be a huge Imperial in the future. Patience is a virtue

But no announcement at gen con. That means we won't be getting it for a long time. X wing armada is not slated to come out until Q1 2015, so March. Any new huge imperial ships won't be coming out before then.

This actually makes sense, & makes me feel at peace. :-) Thank you.

Nevermind we already know Armada plays nothing at all like X-wing, so there's no way they're using Armada to test Imperial huge ships for X-wing...

I actually hadn't read anything on that yet so I didn't know. But as far as looks, I think that could be valid.

As far as combat, maybe not, but maybe just "the feel" of those ships & things like maybe it should be more powerful, or tuned down a bit.

Just a wait & see game now.

I come from the school of thought that you don't announce things until they're pretty much finished development. Otherwise, you'll get exactly four minutes between the time of your announcement and the time someone complains about it.

And then there's the question no one has asked...what about Scum and Villainy Epic ships?

I wouldn't say no one has asked... http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/108071-cr90-imperial-version-or-proxy-miniature/?p=1205424

... I'm actually looking forward to the the S&V "core set" so I can do some conversions.

I hope everyone is right about additional Epic ships, but I can't help but feel that Armada coming out and the lack of any sort of Epic announcement indicates FFG decided to go in another direction.

I will bide my time waiting for any Epic news soaking up all the new faction information. But I'll also keep letting FFG know wherever I can that I still want Imperial (and now Scum) epic play ships!

I very seriously doubt they went another direction, they just announced a 3rd faction which indicates a serious commitment to the future of the game on a grander scale (now they will support 3 not just 2 factions).

I spend a lot of time around game designers and game developers (both PC game developers, Roleplaying designers/publishers and boardgame/guard game developers.. both professional and amateur). The one truth is that designing games and publishing them is a complicated process for everyone and often times things you started a year ago don't get released as fast as things you started 3 months ago. The pace and status of a project vary dramatically but if your serious about your work (and I imagine FFG is) you announce/release things when they are ready. There are any number of reasons why more epic ships haven't been announced/revealed but the most obvious and likely reason is that they simply aren't ready and while waiting sucks for the consumers, it sucks far worse to release something that isn't ready.

We got a lot of great announcements in the last few days, surely not all of them will appeal to X-Wing players but FFG's business goes far and beyond just X-Wing. Armada was clearly ready, the people working on them are not the same people working on X-Wing. Given the announcement of a 6th wave so quickly and its content, its clear they have been working on it for quite some time and they probably made the call with Gencon coming that, since its ready, we may as well announce it.

The order or sequence in which things are announced might not make sense to someone on the outside looking in, but I'm certain that as a business they release things when they are ready to be sold and if things happen to go out of some perceived order by the consumer is not all that relevant, it would make less sense for them to hold back announcing products that are ready based on the idea that the sequence of releases is not what the public expects.

So in short, you announce and release when a product is ready, its simple as that.

... So in short, you announce and release when a product is ready, its simple as that.

It's simple, those that got announced got priority. Now, it may be a bit far to say that those that didn't get announced are being dropped, but the lack of any message on the Epic front does seem to indicate FFG is de-emphasizing Epic play.

... So in short, you announce and release when a product is ready, its simple as that.

My issue here is that for a big event such as GenCon, you get products ready so they can be announced.

It's simple, those that got announced got priority. Now, it may be a bit far to say that those that didn't get announced are being dropped, but the lack of any message on the Epic front does seem to indicate FFG is de-emphasizing Epic play.

That's a consumer perception, not a product development reality. When something is not ready, you don't make announcements, that's just good business. The amount of speculation that takes place among fans who have ZERO information to go on is astounding, but it is largely disregarded because its just that, speculation and everyone knows it. When people have partial or incomplete information as a result of a developer announcing something prematurely however is almost always disastrous. Having your product discussed, reviewed, judged and scrutinized while its in an unfinished form is a guarantee.

I mean just look at what's already happened. Based on blurry photos of cards that will be in the third faction people are already discussing the merits and flaws of individual ships, cards, the faction as a whole. Hell people talk about Armada like they have already played it, I've already seen "first impression reviews" of Armada based on watching 20 second YouTube clips of other people playing it.

Point is, until its ready you don't say anything.. EVER.

Both the Tantive and Transport were announced last year at GenCon... They were released 8 and 9 months later.

So they could be trying to tighten their announcement/release windows.

Not sure how I feel about that... While I like at least knowing something is in the works, 9 months is a pretty long wait.
