Etahn and Cluster Missles

By xTehOnex, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, Etahn has a enemy ship in his sights, and a z-95 is attacking this enemy ship with cluster missiles. My question is, do I get to turn a hit (assuming I roll one -.- ) into a crit for both the first and second round of attacks with the secondary weapon?

ex.)

Cluster Fires,

I roll 3 red

2 hit, 1 blank ---Use Etahn's abiliy---> 1 crit, 1 hit, 1 blank

defender rolls, cancels accordingly

roll again

1 hit, 2 blanks ---Use Etahn's ability---> 1 crit, 2 blanks

defender rolls, cancels accordingly

I guess it comes down to is this --

Are cluster missiles two separate attacks?

Thanks in advanced!

Yes, they are.

Cluster Missiles have you make two separate attacks.

A Focus Token can only modify one of them. Either one could trigger a Gunner although if Gunner is used with the first attack the second could not happen. Any token your opponent spends defending one is not around to defend the second missile.

Either one could trigger a Gunner although if Gunner is used with the first attack the second could not happen. .

thats the first time Ive heard this!

That makes some sense! If the first attack fails to hit, gunner can be used and if one has MF as well CM could be saved for later use! I like that!

Of course if that's what you're shooting for why not just leave the Cluster Missile out of it to begin with? Oh, I see, if the first attack doesn't hit you can't get the "double whammy" you are hoping for if the second missile also hits so you just go for one hit with the gunner and save the missile for another attempt.

Yes, it's on the most recent FAQ:

Gunner
Using Gunner’s ability is a separate attack, which
means that the ship can choose to declare a different
target for the second attack, and any abilities to modify
attack dice (such as spending a focus token or a target
lock) must be used for each attack separately.
When Gunner is used to perform a primary weapon
attack, any additional attacks (such as from Cluster
Missiles) are forfeited

yep, the "double whammy" is HUGE! I one-shotted a Tie Bomber with cluster missiles once! Six hits with no cancels from dice or tokens, it was sweeeet!

At the other extreme, if the first attack has nothing get through, Gunner can call it off, Munitions Failsafe can keep the card, and it can hopefully, be used in a future round!
