I got the first question at the FFG in-flight conference

By Knucklesamwich, in X-Wing

I sat in on the in-flight presentation. At the end was a question and answer session which I was able to ask the first question. I wanted to ask about the perceived power creep that people were discussing once the phantom was announced with its four attack dice. I think FFG has done an incredible job of making the waves new and interesting without minimizing the previous ships except for one obvious exception. I think the Tie Advanced has been tossed to the curb in any competetive setting. We were assured that great pains were taken to balance the power of all new ships against the old standards. The presenter must not have agreed about the Advanced because did not really respond to my suggestion that it was underwhelming. I think from what I saw the future is very bright for x-wing.

Did anyone ask about adding prequel/clone wars ships??

I didn't stay for the whole question time so I am not sure.

You didn't ask about the Imperial Huge Ships?

Tie Advanced response was simply pushing the question away. Really would have wished someone would engage them in a must-answer way with some facts about that ship. Thanks for asking.

Has anyone ever spoken to anyone involved in a media briefing about undisclosed information or consumer products? They are typically under heavy NDA and briefed beforehand on questions they are likely to receive as well as diversion tactics so as to neither answer nor not answer that question. You should expect nothing different here. They were told up front they would be asked about imperial huge ships and the TIE Advanced, and I would bet money they were told to dodge the question instead of risking a slip of any concrete information regarding a confirmation or NON-confirmation. It's safer for them to dodge completely than to release tidbits.

Anyway, I wouldn't be too worried. They have proven in the past that they are listening. And even today, we got an announcement for Y-wings, which many have wanted for a while. All we have to do is wait and see. I'm eagerly awaiting preview articles for Wave 6.

The Y-wing has gotten better with every new astromech. The Tie advanced has not been helped by much. I really was hoping for a fix too.

I disagree completely. Having been to multiple panels for other games... it is PERFECTLY acceptable for developers to simply say "We aren't able to answer your question at this time", rather than dodge the question. Being up front and saying "Sorry can't talk about that" is FAR better than dodging the question - which is shady.

Oh, sorry, I guess I worded poorly. That's kind of what I meant. They are briefed on specifics they are not allowed to talk about. Depends on the tact of the specific presenter, but yes, best option is to often say we can't discuss that.

No I dont remember what it was now.

They're not dumb, they know some things aren't pointed perfectly, especially some of the early stuff, and I'm sure none of them are ignorant about the Advanced. Proton rockets was a card that was clearly made to help it out. As for Aces sets, each side has one so far. Maybe the Advanced will be next, just down the road a bit.

From what I gather , the question response was mainly for the new games and release info...All emphasis was on hyping up the new ; nott on fixing the old...

Totally read VorpalSword's line in a gruff voice with the sounds of knives being sharpened in the background.

Guys that was Christian Petersen the Founder and CEO. No one told him what he could or could not say. It's his company.

I really thought you were pushing the boundaries of civility with the TIE advanced comment. You had a question, he answered it, and you interjected a snarky comment while he was trying to move on to another question.

If FFG was ready to announce something related to the TIE Advanced, they would have. We have seen them address the A-Wing, there is no reason they couldn't do something to show the TIE Advanced. We just have to wait and see what they come up with. Inherently the points system counteracts power-creep as long as ships and upgrades are priced correctly and balanced via play testing. If you look at the tournament lists, you see a very diverse mix of everything, not just new ships. That right there is all you need to show that there is no power-creep.

Thats not what I see in the Regionals results thread.

Are you at GenCon? Are you looking at the lists on the tables at the national championships?

One tournament is not enough to make such a claim. Plus it really matters more what lists do well in the tournaments for getting information on the state of balance.

The tie advanced is barely used in anything but casual play. That is just a fact. My comment was not snarky. I told him I completely agreed that they had done very well balancing everything but one ship.

He was trying to move on with a Q&A. Give them a chance to address the TIE Advanced when they can in the natural flow of releases. There has been a lot coming out. People are already complaining about wallet fatigue.

Anyone ask whether FFG ever looks at these forums, especially MajorJuggler's statistical analyses?

God, I hope not.

Do you guys really expect new releases to be balanced against the TIE Advanced? So anything new coming out should have the same issues and be useless against every other ship in the game but the Advanced? The new stuff is clearly going to be balanced against the average strength of ships that are out now, not the weakest. Since we've seen the A-Wing addressed, I can't imagine we won't see the same thing for the Advanced. Makes my brain hurt that you could even suggest that we should be using the Advanced as the benchmark for other ships. W. T. F.

I think they should be balanced against the X-Wing and the TIE Fighter as those are the base ships in the game.

Either way I think people are frustrated that it feels like the advanced is passed up for fixing yet again, not that all new ships should be as bad as the advanced.

Some folks got a serious crush on Maarek Stele don't they?
