Is it possible to hide Light Turbolasers?

By Lotr_Nerd, in Game Masters

My PCs want to hide Light Turbolasers in blast away panels is it possible to do this also, would a scan reveal them?

How big a ship do they have?

Most PC ships are light freighters, which are usually Silhouette 4. Light Turbolasers are restricted to Silhouette 5+. There is the External Hardpoint from Dangerous Covenants , but that's risky (and almost impossible to conceal).

There's also the manner of where to hide them. Silhouette 5 ships can mount them normally, but if they were concealed inside the ship they'd take up a good portion of the ship's internal volume, cutting into limited cargo space. It's possible, but pretty inefficient.

You could probably treat the concealment itself as a Modification for the weapon, applied using Mechanics and with a spare part cost as usual.

As for detection, that's really a matter of distance and sensor capability, as well as attentiveness. Civilians probably won't notice unless they're fired, but an alert military patrol could pick it up. Probably not before you got into range if you were "flying casual" though...

As Joker said, there are no hard answers to your questions one way or the other.

Can they do this at all? Well that's entirely up to you. Does it seem reasonable given the size of their ship, the money they have to spend, and the mechanics/engineers/facilities at their disposal? If so, then there's probably no reason to refuse.

Can such hidden weapons be detected? Again, there are no hard rules and it's mostly your call. But ships with quality sensors, especially at close range, should probably have a fair chance of detecting them.

Well from what I can tell from the films and such sensors don't work like they do in Star Trek or even modern detection gear so I wouldn't assume they can be detected except visually or maybe through a power spike or if they do some kind of electronically assisted aim.

I'd either go with what Joker Two says, and make it a mod for the weapon, or make it a mod for the ship itself (and use up Hard Points). The advantage of making it a ship mod is that it helps represent using up cargo space, etc. As a mod, I'd say it prevents visual identification of the emplacements and adds setback to any sort of scanner attempt to find them.

Guess pre-deployed they'd just look like 'cargo' (as its going to be a bit hard to hide them in any other location) and there's a chance someone might notice the extra power, figuring out 'what' that extra power might be for is nearly impossible really.

Course, when the Q-ship pops them and they start pinging out all sorts of RF for the turbolasers fire control and so on, then its going to be blatantly obvious.

I always thought SW needed a Spooky or Spectre- basically a big transport which has its entire fuselage full of chainguns, howitzers, missiles, hardcore sensor gear and countermeasures. Flys around in circles over a battlefield and level everything underneath in about 5 minutes

@MKX: Bigger ships with Turbolasers are usually capable of doing that from low orbit and such.

A Base Delta Zero maneuver as it is called or BDZ for short.

The Old Republic used Acclamator Assault ships armed with Turbolasers and Heavy Concussion Missile launchers to do that, later on Victory Cruisers and Star Destroyers would use their Heavy Turbolasers to do the same.

In the Legends EU Captain Pellaeon told C'Baoth that his crew could flatten his entire village without as much as to singe the grass on the mountain where the Empererors secret stash was hidden within. Considering his serious personality i would take that as a fact, not a threat.

So Turbolasers + good sensors are enough.

As for concealable?

Make it a Weapon upgrade that takes up another HP.
