I have been looking at FF's upcoming game, Imperial Assault. As far as actual 'ground combat' goes, this is just a Descent rework. Might as well be 'Star Wars: Mansions of Madness.' C'mon FF, give us an X-Wing Minis ground game with Rebel snowspeeders using the same set-up as X-Wing Minis starfighters. Give us some AT-AT's (which at 1/270, clock in at 8.34cm) with large ship type set-up with multiple firing arcs. A few DF.9 anti-infantry turrets, some 1.4 FD P-towers, and a few small multi-figure infantry stands for both sides; and you got a nice Battle of Hoth starter box. And you have all kinds of different boosters to go with; AT-ST's, speeder bikes, Endor Rebel infantry, all kinds of Imperial infantry, dewbacks, tauntauns, and landspeeders or hover tanks. The possibilities are endless! A game like that, tied to the already popular X-Wing Minis franchise, would sell like hot cakes! So instead of giving us a Descent re-work, give us a REAL ground combat game based on the X-Wing Miniature franchise.
Give us a GOOD ground assault game, NOT a Descent clone...
Is it weird to say that I'm MORE excited for it because it is unrelated to X Wing, isn't a competitive minis game, and IS based on descent? Descent is a great game and fun experience for anyone who loves RPGs, and I'm pumped about the Star Wars version. Also might get me to play FFGs RPG over Saga Edition.
I'd likely to be more interested in it, if I had ever played Descent...
I tought star wars was all about clones...
Let's keep the trolls to Descent, shall we, topher?
I love it, because it will help me to get my friends to play Edge of the empire with me ^^. The plan is already in motion muahaha.

Evil ... pure evil ... ![]()
True, this will enhance EoE, but when I think SW ground combat, I think of battles with a scale like Hoth or Kashyyyk or Endor, not a sneak-around small shoot-out like on Bespin. I think more like the ground missions in Empire at War, not a small team scoot and shoot like Dark Forces. This is more of a small skirmish game than a ground combat game.
I wonder...is it possible that making Imperial Assault might not preclude FFG from making another, different game in the future?
That's silly. I mean, it's not like they have multiple card game products using the Star Wars license. Or multiple RPG brands. It makes sense that there's only one board/tabletop game with non-flying units.
At least the only game like this we'll get wasn't an XCOM clone set during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion. We dodged a bullet on that one.
Don't like it? Don't play it. Play Warhammer 40k and paint your stuff like Imperials and Rebels if you want a skirmish game that's not like this one.

I agree! Armada is to similar to xwing (Oh shut up about the rules! they just made the ships bigger!) This looks to be a bit diffrent.
15mm would be a better scale for it.

Friend of mine did the same with Mansions of Madness and the call of cthulhu RPG...
I am on-board for Armada. We made our own big ship version a few years ago we called SW Fleet Commander, that used rules similar to Axis and Allies War at Sea. Worked nicely. I am hopeful Armada lives up to expectations.
I don't think it is fair to think it is just the ground miniature games. I think it is just a version of descent, and there is not much more to look into it. If Star Wars continues to grow inside FFG, anything can happen. I wouldn't had guessed a third faction so early for Xwing, or Armada, etc... It is like they are going nuts.
We had a new faction a new fleet game and two reveals on large ships, its a good week and although this may not be for everyone it is a bit much to expect a full ground combat game this year.

This is not the droid- err the game you are looking for.
I'm sure FF will bring out a x-wing scale ground combat game, somewhere in the future. Maybe a starter set about the battle of Hoth with a-wing sized snowspeeders and several ATATs. Hell ,they might already be working on it (they could be scale testing to shrink the ATST down in scale as we speak)
But dont expect an infantry scale board game to be the massive ground combat star wars game that you are looking for.
To be honest the Rebels vs Imperials struggle in Star Wars is not the universe for ground scale miniature wargames. The Battle of Hoth was an example of a bigger ground battle in the war and the Rebels got stomped in 5 minutes once the ATATs got in range.
The ground combat miniature wargame genre is packed with much bigger players (FoW, 40k, PP) that I just don't know if it will catch on too much.

I feel exactly the same way, and it's the reason I didn't ever expect to see a ground game in the SW universe. I think this is about the limit of what they could have done without making me stop and scratch my head.
The Rebellion can't match the Empire in terms of soldiers or equipment; they're a guerrilla movement. They got ROFLstomped on the ground at Hoth; a little while later they threw everything they had against the Death Star II at Endor, and the only reason they didn't get absolutely ROFLstomped there was that crazy old Palpatine thought he was setting a trap for them.

Ewoks! The rebels need more Ewoks. They took out two ATSTs with boulders and logs! ![]()
The new board game is STAR WARS Ground Wars in a cool semi-RPG-skirmish form. It competes very nicely indeed with Wizzies new dragon thing-a-majig.
Also look at the ton of kick-started neat little boxed miniatures-rich board games that have come out in the last two years. Zombicide, Sedition Wars, and so on and so forth.
FFG needs it's own neatly packaged and expandable board game in this arena that can complement their complete Star Wars ranges. Think of all of the Star Wars RPG people that are ecstatic about Imperial Assault.

Very well played Fantasy Flight Games... well played indeed!!!

FFG is a very sharp top of the line game company. There is no reason whatsoever for them to try to compete with one of their licensed (GW) allied companies number one (40K) product ranges.

There is not going to be a 40K version of X-Wing...

They just answered that today.

For me, this is exactly the kind of game I wanted to see. I have never played Descent, but it looks really cool. A Star Wars version is a fantastic idea. It reminds me of all the great days playing Hero Quest as a kid.

Yes!
Now consider this for a moment; the miniatures for Imperial Assault, have to be the highest quality sculpts ever produced for Star Wars gaming.

The battalions of Storm Troopers, lances of AT-STs, custom painted "hero" minis for the PCs and I am sure these Ally and Villain Packs are going to make it that much more accessible to those of us playing the RPGs.
Personally, ecstatic, is an understatement.
