Imperial Assault

By any2cards, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I would much more prefer to command squads of storm troopers in 30mm or smaller scale on self made open battleground.

I have a baaaaad feelings about this one :)

It looks great, like descent with an additional skirmish mode and an rpg that you can use the models and board for.

I hope the next descent expansion includes skirmish rules.

Star Wars Descent! Nice!

Though I think it will really shine a light on the fact that the current official rules, for Descent and Imperial Assault, are more geared toward tactical skirmishes than toward a true delving/light RPG, which is more what Descent 1E felt like.

This looks cool.

I hope the next descent expansion includes skirmish rules.

We've got the quest vault, we can make some! There have already been a few PvP maps published there.

We could but with official skirmish rules we'll get full OP support, like the LCGs, with tournaments.

Looks cool and interesting. I wonder how could this affect D2e? Maybe some new mechanics or playstyles could be transformed into D2e.

Maybe in the near future we would see a comming back of Descent 1e play style - only Overlord knows the map and suprises on it. Or even better an official skirmish mode.

I must say that SW:IA could be number one board game seller of next year.

Keeping my eyes open to hear more about this title.

IA will be the biggest selling board games next year, they've taken the number 1 selling board game and crossed it with the number 1 selling IP. Adding in full OP support and a new way to play I don't see how this can fail to be the top game.

That's before you consider that new players would have to choose between both games.

I do worry about how this affect support for descent.

My wallet is afraid

Wow that line of sight rule i think is so much better as you can actually use cover for a change!

Line of site is measured from any corner of the attackers, 2 lines are measured and must be drawn to two adjacent spaces to the defender. I love that so much more !

That was the first thing I thought when seeing the reveal, because as these 2 games are extremely similar they would need the same designers for new content. Furthermore the mechanics seem to be better in IA than in Descent 2ed.

My only problem with the game is the 100$ price-tag and the Star-Wars-lincense. I just think Fantasy is more universally appealing than Star-Wars and I think most of my gaming-group can't relate that well to the Star-Wars universe to want to play it as much and often as Descent.

I however think this game has great sales-potential: Star Wars fans seem to not care how much they are spending on Star-Wars related stuff and I think they even buy it just because of the miniatures, so imo it will sell great.

I just hope this game doesn't bring the end of Descent followed by a Descent3ed in 2016.

I can't agree, Star Wars is more universal than fantasy. Way more people in the general population would ascribe to being fans of Star Wars than fans of fantasy. Star Wars is pretty much the highest selling IP in history.

I was just talking about my personal friends and myself not about the general gaming community, then again I maybe worded it poorly. I said that this game will sell well though. I even think it will be that profitable that FFG will fade out Descent2E.

I like star-wars and I would want to try out that game, I'm just not sure if I would be playing it as often as I play Descent and I'm not sure that my friends would want to do that either.

The Imperial Assault LoS rules are SOOOOO much better than those in Descent. Would the balance of Descent be upset if I replaced the existing LoS rules with the IA ones? I haven't had much experience with the game yet but I don't believe it would be a problem.

Also, the difference between the white and black dice is very intriguing. I like how each represents a different kind of defense, but neither is objectively better than the other. I hope that the eventual Descent 3rd Edition borrows this convention :)

I am thinking about this too and would like to try it, i think it would really change the feel of the game for the better. I think you should be able to melee or point-blank ranged hit any adjacent space however.

Y X *

X H *

* * *

Y is the monster you want to attack, X are 2 other monsters, H is your hero. According to the star wars line of site rules (as far as the video has told us) you could not hit the Y monster. I think thats going a bit too far and would start to disturb quest balance.

Yeah, if you're adjacent to a monster you should definitely be in line of sight.

Maybe in IA melee attacks don't need LOS, just adjacency.

the worst announcement ever !

I hope this game will be soon forgotten forever, the worst selling, and never be attempted again.

Except being a shadow to descent, I don't see the point

Whats wrong with a star wars themed Descent? Some people hate fantasy setting but love a sci-fi setting, it just opens up this genre of gaming to new people.

boring antagonist mechanics (instead of char.skills the atagonist can... bring in more bad guys)

less moving parts (no classes only character-specific skills, no OL-deck, very little imperial forces variation)

completely unknown bland heroes (why should I care about them?, do they have any special character traits? they have very little tie-in with the main chars)

seemingly no competition leading to no suspension (how was the antagonist supposed to win this demo?)

too bad this game takes resources off Descent. So far I'm not very interested in this semi-interactive Star-Wars spin-off story-ride with forgetable characters.

The problems are simple :

- Descent should stay descent

- why not twilight imperium universe ?

- since it's star wars they will do plenty of expansion in short time, time that will not be spend to descent

- If descent players go away from descent, expansion will take time and finnally never come

So, I see only one hope : this game will soon burn out, and the experience gained from this will be usefull to descent

I just recently watched the demo, and more interesting to me than the line of sight changes (or attribute tests) is the idea of alternating hero /monster group turns rather than all heroes followed by all monsters. The rules for beginning/end of OL turn and the wording of some abilities would have to be changed, but that could absolutely make certain Descent encounters more interesting!

I would enjoy twilight imperium more than star wars as well. At least it's more colorfull and the races are highly different from each other. But I guess the point of this game is high sales-numbers and for that Star-Wars will do a much better job.

At least I won't buy this game if there aren't significant changes to the antagonist mechanics. As of now it looks extremely boring, because the impirium is no threat, heroes are easily healed and surprises aren't dynamically initiated via a deck of cards but by the rulebook. It seems like there is no game in there, no meaningfull tactical considerations, as the impirial side just can't do anything to the heroes.
