Just happened for XWMG.
Only a matter of time for Armada.
Discuss.
Third Faction. No really, I'm betting on it.
No.
Capitl ships is the name of this game. Not "anyone who can fly a snub nosed fighter"
Not going to happen. What capital ships would you even put out for a third faction?
The only slight argument would be jabbas sail barge.

I think this is the biggest sticking point: even if you could scrape up enough to fill out a single wave, you'd have pretty much exhausted the available content.
After all I've read so far I think its a possibility. The Hapes and Zahn Consortium come to mind and possibly Thrawn's Empire of the Hand.
*scratches head*
Man most of you guys aren't very familiar with The Expanded Universe are you..?
There's the Black Sun, for starters.
They had many,
many
capital ships. Everything from Assault Cruisers to Nebulons, they were definitely not lacking at all... And then there's these guys.
The Zann Consortium
And that's not even counting Hutt fleets.

From a brief wookiepedia search, it looks like both Zann/Thrawn used primarily Rebel or Imperial ships/technology. You could release a handful of "unique" ships for each, possibly, but...
...who's going to buy them, kid, you?
I've never read anything about Empire of the Hand and the Zann Consortium is an invention of the EAW expansion, no? I always thought the premise of that game (which I haven't played) seemed quite silly. Some random space pirate hijacks the Eclipse? OK...
Hapes is a little more plausible, but again - how many people that have even read about the Hapans are going to run out and buy a fleet of Battle Dragons?
I don't see it being financially viable for FFG.
Very unlikely. Good guys vs. Rebels all the way.

The wookiepedia article says they had three types of capital ships: the Interceptor-class frigate, Venator-class star destroyer, and - 137 YEARS after the Battle of Yavin, an MC80 Mon Cal cruiser.
Sounds like loads of fun!

Oh yeah FoC was f**king stupid beyond belief but the Cosortium had several original designs. A few were stolen, but The Empire didn't use them.

That sounds off. They must have had more.

I'm not going to go back and search your posts, but there was a lot of "Not going to happen," being said in X-Wing for the better part of the year. You might not want to be so sanguine.

Well I said it could be a possibility but I'm not specifically asking for it.
The Empire of the Hand is Grand Admiral Thrawn's empire in the Unknown Regions and an autonomous extension of Palpatine's Empire. Their ships are a combination of Imperial and Chiss technology.

For sure. I'll admit I didn't think that that was likely either. But this is a totally different ballgame. Smugglers, bounty hunters, space pirates, etc. have a well-established existence in films and the EU, but it's not like Boba Fett flies a Star Destroyer.
Even the Black Sun is just a criminal syndicate, not a galactic government. The goal of a pirate or smuggler is to make money, not conquer the galaxy. So while the Black Sun or the Zann Consortium or whoever might have had the odd capital ship, it still doesn't make sense in a capital ship game. It's not like they were putting together massive fleets to try and take over the Empire.

Well, that was more or less Zann's goal.

Fair enough. I haven't played the game, so I'm a little unclear on the plot.
But anyway, if that was the plot, that's pretty stupid and I don't support extending it over into Armada.
My opinion, anyway.

Considering what Wave 6 is for XWM, I'd say Black Sun: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Black_Sun
They've got a few unique ships, but also Mon Cals and leftovers from the Grand Army of the Republic.
Especially since they were a part of Empire at War.
Other possibilities include:
Hapan Navy
Republic Navy Ships
Separatist Navy Ships

Mine, too.
I hope not.
Will definitely happen if there is money in it.
If armada is as popular and has the success that X-Wing enjoys, then a 3rd faction will come.

Ehhhh....you do realize that the 'Assault Frigate Mk II', which this game is releasing in its VERY FIRST WAVE OF SHIPS , has only previous appeared in that exact same 'Empire at War' game you are criticizing for 'silly designs', right?
IMHO, of course, the Zann Consortium ships are quite a bit less silly looking than the Assault Frigate Mk II, but here we are - wave 1 of the game, and right in our faces 'Empire at War' ships.
Not to mention the even-more-dubious original of the other Imperial ship we are getting in this wave - the 'Gladiator-class Star Destroyer', which started life in a 1980s cartoon series for kids...

No, but they might put together a small strike fleet in order to get to something their fighters could not get to alone or as distraction to other machinations. Not every fight in SW needs to be a fight for galactic conquest.
Also, although still undeniably silly (if not more so), Zann was not trying to take over the galaxy. He did try to get his hands into every major system and form a criminal organization bigger than the Black Son and Hutts combined. He "allied" with the rebels against the empire. After the emperors death, he and the rebels launched a raid on the Eclipse while it was in dry dock. Zann had his forces capture it. The battle above Coruscant, combined with the hijacking of the Eclipse was a distraction so that Zann could break into the Emperors personal vault and still a **** ton of money.
So ya, he formed a criminal empire, along with his own fleet full of ships custom designed by himself. He engaged in all out battle against the empire and hijacked the Eclipse...all so he could steal the Emperors credit card. But that is pretty much the EoW: FoC story.
That being said many of the Consortium ships were pretty badass and very unique. I personally would not mind seeing a couple, even if a couple is all we got.

No! No different. Only different in your mind! You must unlearn what you have learned. Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hm? Mmmm.
And well you should not, for FFG's desire is your money, and a powerful Force that is.
I do love Consortium ships, but they were stupidly OP in the game.
I was always one of those who called for a fringe faction in X-Wing Miniatures and I'm super happy it happened, but that is a different game and it just doesn't seem like it fits this game of fleet battles.
The Zann Consortium is one of the super silly parts of the EU that it's a relief to be rid of and simply call a "Legend". There's no reason to immortalize a cynical storyline created by people with no love of Star Wars or it's lore, and that was created simply to sell an expansion pack for a game and never used again by anyone ever.
However, that doesn't mean there will NEVER be a third faction. We've barely even started this new unified canon era and anything could be forthcoming that FFG might want to use. For all we know the Mandalorians are rejuvenated and become a major power in the Sequel Trilogy era. Or the Sith and Empire become separate factions. Or the old Separatist worlds, once free of the Emperor, decide they want to do their own thing (minus the really silly droids you can't take seriously).
So yes, put me in the "a third faction is possible" camp, but firmly in the "it won't be anything we know about right now" camp too.
And for the record, I like the look of the Gladiator class Star Destroyer, whatever it's source.
