Help an Old X-Winger Out !!!

By any2cards, in X-Wing

Okay, first I need to state that I love Star Wars (most Sci-Fi for that matter). As such, I have actively collected everything to do with X-Wing, and have actively participated on the forums.

I am most likely atypical of the average gamer/participant here, as I suspect I am far, far older than most of you.

Anyway, let's get to the point of this thread, before it becomes TL;DR. This is what I have in my current collection:

Rebels: 8 X-Wings, 4 Y-Wings, 8 A-Wings, 1 YT-1300, 4 B-Wings, 2 HWK-290s, 1 GR-75, 1 CR90, 2 E-Wings, 2 Z-95s, 1 YT-2400

Imperials: 4 TIE Advanced, 10 TIE Fighters, 2 Firespray-31s, 9 TIE Interceptors, 1 Lambda Shuttle, 2 TIE Bombers, 2 TIE Defenders, 2 TIE Phantoms, 1 VT-49

Now the funny part - other than one or two introductory games, I have never played the game.

I know, I know ... lot's of money spent to not play the game. First, I love the minis, and second, I will be playing soon. I have gathered a group of friends, and we are all going to learn through doing.

Now, since I have been an active member of the forum, I have read up on many of the popular lists, meta, etc.

Here is my question: Given the ships I currently own, and taking into account popular lists, meta, etc., what else, if anything, would you suggest I purchase, so that I and my group of friends can play the game, and have the ability and flexibility of trying many of the lists developed over time? Keep in mind that we will play casual, tournaments (among ourselves), EPIC, etc.

Any suggestions, criticisms, etc. are welcome. Thanks in advance for your input.

You have so many ships that you can run nearly any combo.

For instance, I only have 12 total ships, and I can completely supply one rebel vs imps match, with plenty of stuff left over.

2 game mats, since it looks like you have enough models to have you and your friends play at the same time, plus then you can do epic play.

(might not be what you were looking for but I personally think it would greatly add to your experience playing)

You really don't need anything else to start playing.

If you want to give the game a few try's before you head to the table with your friends, check out the Vassal module and play a few games online.

And 4 TIE Advanced? Yeah, you need to play a few games before you purchase anything else....

Based on that list, the only thing you need is to stop buying things. :P

The only thing I can think of you that you might possibly want. Would be a few more Z-95's but even then... That's only because you felt the need to spend more money.

Aside from mats, which you will need to play, you need to get some games in man! If you can't get games in locally, I highly recommend Vassal for play. While it is not the same one-on-one experience of play at your game store, it is a why to get your game on!

Also, tune into our podcast to keep up with what the game is up to and what ships are hot right now!

Thanks for all of the responses. Keep them coming.

I actually do have multiple 3x3 mats, but I don't have any 3x6 mats. Obviously, I can combine two 3x3 to get a 3x6, although it could be inconvenient where the edges meet up.

I will have to look at Vassal. Right now, I have been reading, re-reading, etc. on the rules, faqs, etc., so that I can appropriately teach the game to the others. I have also encouraged all of them to do their own reading.

I think we will also run some introductory games just so they get the feel of movement, attacks, defense, etc. before adding in all other other obstacles, cards, etc.

I don't have much of a life, :P , so I am looking forward to the battles.

As for having enough of stuff, I say never. You can't have too many ships, especially with how good they all look.

Of course, in another 6 months or so, I can start collecting all of the Armada stuff as well.

Good times !!! :D

How have you gotten wave 5 ships already?

How have you gotten wave 5 ships already?

They have Wave 5 ships for sale at Gencon.

My advice is - stop buying ships and start playing!

Oh and unless you're like 80... You're not far, far older then many of us.

73. Everyone else at Gen Con is my grand or great grand child. You would not believe the amount of looks I get as I wander around. I think they are all thinking to themselves ... "... it's like after 12 noon, shouldn't you be in bed?" :P

The best teacher of this game is experience... grab someone, anyone, and start rolling dice.

Vassal can be a good tool, there is a learning curve to it that has nothing to do with the game. It is the interface. That being said, after a few games, you'll have it down and be playing like a pro in no time!
