Y Wing build advice, 100 point casual friendly game.

By Gadge, in X-Wing

Ions don't negate maneuvering, they reward it. Now you have to stay out of range 2 of Y-wings.

never used turret only cannon on defender so my Y-wing exp is next to nothing i've only flown against them and found them to be so durable you don't want to have to focus them but ion makes a really hard choice

I am with you, I do love synergy.

One of my personal favourites is the classic Golden Daggers Squadron.

2 x Dagger squadron and 2 gold squadron with ion cannon turret. - leaves you six points for goodies

Simple, effective and fun to fly

Cheers for the help guys

I played Dutch and Garven with the rookie X and Ys, ions on the Ys and an R5 on dutch and for some mental reason i put an r2 on Garvin then realised that making all your 1-2 moves green is pointless on an xwing.. but hey placed the card and ran with it.

Resounding win against a ps2 tie bomber, mauler mithel, dark curse and two ps1 interceptors.

Both Y's eventually bought it but the X wings did the damage, flew rings round imobilised 'aces' and came out unscathed.

This was a good result, especially as in the first game of the evening kath Scarlet and two royal guard ties got massaced by Luke skywalker, the mouldy crow and two z95s! All i killed in that game was the 95s and they were the PS 8 guy and a tala squadron one.

I'm not saying ion turrets re un-balanced i'm saying they are anti fun. It's not the same.

I don't like having my movement denied to me, it's boring.

I don't like have targets or shots denied to me, but you don't see me complaining about Phantoms decloaking/cloaking or PtL Interceptors barrel rolling and boosting*

*much

cheated? Or do you just mean IONs

yeah i was surprised by his Imp list, i thought he put too many points in two brittle 'aces' and his interceptors were to predictavle as i always knew where they were so the ability to boost or roll out of arc was lost.

I was about 1.30am when we finished game 2 though so i think we were both flying too casual by that point.

In my first game i had appalling luck on the dice, just couldnt land a hit, opening moved were perfect, interceptors behind his line and at range one to the rear in a few moves without a scratch.... fire spray moving in from the right flank... also out of arc, merc co pilot and autoblaster.... just could not get 'hit' or 'crit' results.

law of large numbers i guess as in the second game my xwings were getting three or four hit rolls more often than not.

cool, glad to hear that the lists worked out. R2 on garvin wasn't actually a bad idea, i do it all the time for my x wings since it makes them abit more unpredictable after you do the 4k, and can be very helpful if your using a stress inducing ept, like ptl or expert handling.

Phantoms absolutely need ioning.

After the mauling I recieved from Whisper and a Shadow the other day, Blount & Ion Pulse Missiles now have a place in all mah lists.

edit: love the sig Glentopher!

My logic at the time was 'boost good pilots' , the rookie Y is going to be a damage sponge in the centre while trying to slow down his good stuff... putting a mech on it just seemed like suicide for the mech. If i'd have had a second R5 card or thought of saying to Sam 'do you mind me proxying an r5' i'd have stuck it on the cheap Y wing as it would have lived a tiny but longer.

The R5 on Dutch was a life saver as his first damaging hit made him very skagged but the R5 fixed it at the end of the turn.

i cant recall what it was right now but I remember going 'balls' at the time as i thought I'd lost the Y really early.

and yeah hahah, clever sig.

But after getting mauled by a HWK with turrets as imperials and seeing how good ion turrets are i'm seeing HWKs and Y wings in a new light.

Which is cool cos when i was a kid my first star wars fighter was a Y wing, all my mates had xwings and i was the only person i knew with a y wing and i loved it.... such a great kids toy, much better made than the xwing or tie were.

Well if you put flechette torpedoes and an ion turret on a couple of Y-wings then you can severely cripple some enemy ships for a few turns. Being stuck with a stress token keeping you from persorming actions and not being able to clear it because you are stuck doing a white 1 straight maneuver is a real pain in the ass. Not to mention as long as you keep an ion token on them they can't clear the stress so you can keep an enemy stressed multiple turns from just one flechette torp. Not to mention just two Y-wings with ion turrets can pin down most large ships easily.

Chris R thats good advice but i've just finished reading the book about the making of 'The Room' and i cant stop laughing as there is a random drug dealer in that film who turns up unexplained on a roof top demanding money and is never seen again... its the only convincing performance in the movie and is a cult classic.

But i'm sure Chris R is your real name and you're not a 'the room' fan.

Did you have the Kenner battery operated one with bomb that you could drop by hitting a little button? I had that one, and my older brother had the X-wing and TIE fighter. I ruined them all in the sand box, though :(

Yup that the one, thebattery made the ion turret go in 45 degree arc and make a noise iirc. I used to put the r5 red droid in it too to make it stand out.

Yeah it also had a plastic bomb. When i was a kid i'd sometimes take the batterys out and use the compartment as 'cargo storage' when it was making supply runs to rebel outposts.

Oh man, the memories! My parents wouldn't keep buying batteries, so I just put GI-Joes in there, lol. Man, the 80s were a great time to be a kid.

I think C-3po used that 'cargo container' a fair few time so luke and r2 coudl fly the same ship with him!

I agree 80s kids toys were awesome. I gave most of mine to my cousins.

Gi Joe (12") was 'action man' over here and 'action force' in the 4" models...same stuff on the whole, sometimes repaints though.

I still have a stack of 'Starcom' toys, they were the best space toys ever made in the 80s... technology wise they made star wars stuff look like it had been made by ewoks.

I don't know how tempted I'd be to use ordnance without Munitions Failsafe. Welcome to the addiction. :)

I thank you for taking my suggested list. :D

No the pleasure is all mine. I'm such an easy going 'fly casual' narrative player I too often pick stuff thats has bags of 'character' but cant fight it's way out of a paper bag as I like games to be stories.

Your list said 'death star trench run' to be so was thematic and also looked pretty strong as a force. 4 ship rebs always make me feel safer. :)
