strange questions on Strange Sightings

1. What happens if it's the first mythos card of the game? (I'd rule that no monsters are spawned)

2. What happens if it is drawn while Abhoth is the Ancient One? (I'd rule that no Child of Abhoth is spawned, as Aboth reads "put a random Child of Abhoth on the surging gate" and in this case no gate was surged)

Am I right?

I really like the way you put the image of the card in question.

1) We always draw another card with a gate on it. I think Kevin once suggested that, too. Before that we'd just considered ourselves lucky.

2) Yep, there's no gate to put a child on. Lucky again! But, as I said, now we'd draw another Mythos card, so that question wouldn't (and hadn't) come up.

Why would you redraw the Sightining against Aboth? The question remains even if it isn't the first mythos. So against Aboth you would simply ignore all the Strange Sightnings? sounds a little harsh to me.

No, he means as the first Mythos only.

Because there's no gate. It's the gate that starts the whole thing off. I was just referring to the opening card. No, a surge is a surge. That's actually happened and we just go back to the previous gate.

As a general (house) rule, I redraw the first Mythos card until it is one with a gate.

In case of Strange Sightings and Abhoth, I either put the Child on a gate chosen by the first player or I draw another Mythos card, check what gate it is and put the Child there.

Then you're making the game easier on yourself if you the first card you draw is a double-doom card. But I guess everyone needs their handicaps.

Statistically speaking, I am making it harder, as I play with all expansions together. Strange Sighting wouldn't do anything as first Mythos card, and there are more Strange Sightings (4 or 5 I think) than Double-Dooms (2 if you don't count Rumors, which would be redrawn anyway). Taking Acts and Intermission into consideration, it more or less balances out.

I also didn't mention that I reshuffle the Mythos deck in that case before drawing anew, so i can't be certain the card won't show up again during the game.

Wait, so you redraw a card if the first mythos is next act? Wow. You're essentially canceling an act card with no penalty. Way to make act cards even more rare.

Point there. Everybody should know by now I'm an Act Advocate.

For me, unless it's a rumor, the first card flies. Once I got a monster surge (nothing)! Once in a while, double-doom. A Next Act starter is a real kickoff to an awesome game ;)
