Misc. rules questions

By Intys Rule, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hello! I just want to ask a few questions to clarify some rulings.

1. A pilot lands on an asteroid the previous turn, and there is part of the asteroid in front of his ship. On the next turn, he flies off the asteroid but since the movement template hits/overlaps/touches the asteroid, he rolls again to check if he gets damaged. So far, so good. During his movement, the flies over ANOTHER asteroid, but this time he makes it through the other side of it (does not land on the asteroid). Does he make a new check for flying over the 2nd asteroid?

1a. What if he doesn't make it past the second asteroid but lands on it like with the first asteroid, does he make a new check?

2. Can a ship (Tie Interceptor or maybe Tie Phantom) barrel roll if the template hits/overlaps/touches an asteroid but both the start and end positions of the ship base DOES NOT hit/overlap/touch the asteroid? I know a ship cannot barrel roll if it ends up on an asteroid, but what if the "other side" of the maneuver is clear? Does he have to roll one attack die to check for damage?

2a. What if the ship boosts and the template hits/overlaps/touches an asteroid but both the start and end positions are clear of the obstacle, is the boost allowed? Does he have to check for damage? Note the Boost Action reference card says "a boost does not count as executing a maneuver" and p.20 on the rulebooks says "in which either the maneuver template".

3. A pilot gets a critical hit and gets the Blinded Pilot card. On the next turn, he has no valid targets. Can he still make an attack, not roll any dice, and flip the card facedown? One of our players says he can just shoot out into space which kinda makes sense but it really weakens the critical hit.... I always thought you'd have to have a valid target to attack (in range and in arc).

4. Turr Phennir with Push the Limit makes a move, does an action, and then does another action from PTL and gets a stress token. On the combat phase, he then shoots an enemy ship. Can he still boost/barrel roll considering he's gotten a stress token from PTL?

5. Echo with Advanced Sensors -- Echo is un-cloaked at the start of the turn. Can he use Advanced Sensors to perform 1 free action to cloak, and then decloack (and barrel roll/boost), THEN move his ship based on the movement dial? I am just verifying if Echo can Adv.Sensor (cloak) -> decloak (barrel roll/boost) -> move -> attack and then rinse and repeat for the next turn.

6. A player rolls 4 attack dice, gets two hits, a focus, and a blank result. He uses his focus token to convert the focus to a hit and then re-rolls the blank result by spending a target lock. He gets a focus result on the re-rolled die. Can he "take back" his spent focus token so he ends up with 4 hits or is he stuck with two hits, a focus->hit, and a focus? I know the "friendly" option is to allow him to get away with 4 hits, but I don't want to be giving freebies during tournaments.

7. A ship has the Gunner crew upgrade. He rolls 5 attack dice and gets two hits and one crit result. The defender manages to cancel all of this because of dice rolls and/or spending focus/evade tokens. Is this attack considered "an attack that does not hit" and can the Gunner now allow the player to make a SECOND attack with 5 attack dice? I'm trying to understand if Gunner allos a second attack only when the attacking player ends up with blank results (or blanks and focuses but with no focus token to spend) or if the ability activates AFTER both players have rolled dice.

8. A ship has the Fire-Control System upgrade and has no target locks on anyone at the beginning of the combat phase. The player makes an attack and rolls blanks. Does he get the target lock and can he spend it to reroll these blank results?

9. Can Soontir Fel with Push the Limit execute his move, choose a focus action, choose an evade action for PTL, and then get a second focus action from his ability?

10. I'm trying to find the rules text which says that a Tie Interceptor with Push the Limit cannot boost twice in one turn. Or basically do two similar actions in one turn. Any help?

Thanks for any help!

only one damage check for the whole maneuver.

1a. What if he doesn't make it past the second asteroid but lands on it like with the first asteroid, does he make a new check?

Only if the next turn the template crosses the new asteroid.

No!

No!

One of our players says he can just shoot out into space which kinda makes sense but it really weakens the critical hit.... I always thought you'd have to have a valid target to attack (in range and in arc).

No, must have a valid target.

4. Turr Phennir with Push the Limit makes a move, does an action, and then does another action from PTL and gets a stress token. On the combat phase, he then shoots an enemy ship. Can he still boost/barrel roll considering he's gotten a stress token from PTL?

No, its an action.

5. Echo with Advanced Sensors -- Echo is un-cloaked at the start of the turn. Can he use Advanced Sensors to perform 1 free action to cloak, and then decloack (and barrel roll/boost), THEN move his ship based on the movement dial? I am just verifying if Echo can Adv.Sensor (cloak) -> decloak (barrel roll/boost) -> move -> attack and then rinse and repeat for the next turn.

no

No, the player should have saved the focus until after the reroll and not rerolled the focus die.

7. A ship has the Gunner crew upgrade. He rolls 5 attack dice and gets two hits and one crit result. The defender manages to cancel all of this because of dice rolls and/or spending focus/evade tokens. I'm trying to understand if Gunner allos a second attack only when the attacking player ends up with blank results (or blanks and focuses but with no focus token to spend) or if the ability activates AFTER both players have rolled dice.

Yes, no hits! Gunner rolls 5 dice again.

8. A ship has the Fire-Control System upgrade and has no target locks on anyone at the beginning of the combat phase. The player makes an attack and rolls blanks. Does he get the target lock and can he spend it to reroll these blank results?

He gets the TL but cant use it that round.

9. Can Soontir Fel with Push the Limit execute his move, choose a focus action, choose an evade action for PTL, and then get a second focus action from his ability?

he gets the focus token, but its not from an action

10. I'm trying to find the rules text which says that a Tie Interceptor with Push the Limit cannot boost twice in one turn. Or basically do two similar actions in one turn. Any help?

bottom of pg 9 in the rulebook!

Thanks for any help!

1. If you hit an asteroid it doesn't matter how many you hit as the results are the same. If you 'hit' three asteroids with your movement you'll still check for damage only once.

2. You may not place the template to barrel roll or boost such that it will overlap an obstacle.

3. Uncertain. I'd say "fine" but I could be wrong.

4. No, he is stressed from using PtL and may not take actions when stressed. I could have performed his normal action and then used the action provided when he attacks to trigger PtL and gain the extra action at that time.

5. I think you could take the action via AS to Cloak and the Decloak before moving but probably should double check the FAQ. Definitely may NOT Decloak/Cloak/Decloak again.

6. He spent the Focus an now doesn't have it to turn the TL rerolled dice. LESSON TO LEARN: REROLL DICE BEFORE SPENDING Focus.

7. Are all [hit] and [crit] results from the attack cancelled by [evade] dice and Evade tokens? If YES then the attack misses and Gunner triggers. All [blank] or [focus] results are not required to miss.

8. He gets the TL after the attack is made. He may NOT use the TL to reroll the attack that grants the TL. Now if he had Gunner or could otherwise make another attack (Cluster Missile/Corran) that new TL COULD be used on the second attack which would then provide a TL again.

9. NO!!! Fel's ability does not give him a Focus ACTION which he could not use because of the Stress, it just assigns the ship a Focus TOKEN when it also gains a Stress Token. I believe the NET result is what you are asking about but the process of getting there is a little different.

10. It's in the rulebook but I'm not sure where.

On question 5, the answer is most definitely no. The latest FAQ explicitly forbids using Advanced Sensors to cloak and then immediately decloaking on Page 13 (under the section for Advanced Sensors).

3. You need a valid target, so if there isn't one available, you've just got to suck it up and wait until there is.

5. Per the latest FAQ: "If a TIE Phantom uses Advanced Sensors to perform a cloak action, it cannot immediately decloak."

8. He gets the TL after all steps have been completed. If the ship had a Gunner, and missed with the first attack, he would then receive a TL that he could use on the Gunner's attack, because Gunner is classed as a separate attack.

9. StevenO is correct there. It is important that you understand there is a difference in performing an action to get a token, and receiving a token from an ability or outside source. Both instances happen quite often in this game, and stress will prohibit performing actions but not receiving tokens. On the same line of thought, if you are stressed you can't receive a "free action" either. Stress is a big component in the game mechanic.

10. Page 9: "Card abilities without the “Action:” header may be resolved when specified on the card and do not count as the ship’s action. However, a ship cannot perform the same action more than once during a single game round (not even when the action is a “free action”)."

@Intys Rule: Have you downloaded the FAQ. It's probably your best source of answers for any questions you may have.

I'm not sure I understand the answers for question 9, so to clarify if others are confused as well.

What you're describing is permitted, and Soontir would end up with 1 evade token, 1 stress token and 2 focus tokens.

NO. What he is describing is NOT permitted. It is all because he says he gets a Focus ACTION from Fel's ability and THAT is not correct. Now simply changing the word "action" to "token" would make it legal but the ACTION can not be taken while stressed.

OP asks if he can use Focus Action and take Evade Action using PTL. That's all good. THEN it is asked if Fel's ability will let him take a second Focus Action; THIS is that part that does not work for two reasons actually. One reason is that you can only perform a given action once per turn even if you have multiple actions (Vader can't roll-roll for example) and the second reason is that you can not perform actions while you have a Stress token (with one exception.)

Fel's ability gives a Focus TOKEN which is not the same as taking the Focus Action.

Now simply changing the word "action" to "token" would make it legal but the ACTION can not be taken while stressed.

But this is in fact what the card says - assign 1 focus token to your ship - the OP was paraphrasing and inadvertently muddled the game terms a bit.

You will end up with 1 stress, 1 evade and 2 focus tokens if you do what the OP is suggesting. He does not break any rules, because no 2nd Focus action is performed.

The OP may have been "paraphrasing" but "inadvertently muddling game terms" is what makes it wrong.

The answer to the OP's question number 9 is NO. We may know what he probably wants to say and the answers have pointed to the correct way of doing things (I see Plainsman changed his answer as he originally followed the spirit of the question instead of the actual question.) but to avoid any potential confusion it needs to be points out that the answer is still NO to taking a second Focus ACTION while Stressed.

The end result may be correct but how it was arrived at was all wrong and could lead to problems. It's a little like driving the wrong way down a one-way street to get somewhere in that you get to the proper destination but you aren't following the right rules to get there.

As long as we agree its all good

Thanks for the replies guys and thanks for the clarification re: Soontir's Focus token vs. Focus action.

Just one more thing regarding the target lock though:

8. A ship has the Fire-Control System upgrade and has no target locks on anyone at the beginning of the combat phase. The player makes an attack and rolls blanks. Does he get the target lock and can he spend it to reroll these blank results?

He's performed an attack (rolled blanks) but gets a target lock. Why can't he spend it NOW to reroll those blanks? I've re-read the "Spending Target Lock Tokens" on the rulebook and also the FCS entry on the FAQ but I still can't figure out why he can't spend it straight away.

Because you don't get it in time. FCS kicks in "after you perform an attack", which means that by the time it activates the attack has already ended.

You get the Target Lock only after you've gone through all the steps for your attack.

  1. Roll attack dice
  2. Defender modifies
  3. Attacker modifies (rerolls and tokens)
  4. Compare results
  5. Suffer damage (if any)
  6. Attack over, FCS grants a target lock now - too late for this attack.

If you are using a ship with Gunner, you can make an attack and gain a target lock after the attack is complete. If you failed to hit, Gunner can kick in, and now you've got a target lock to use on the Gunner attack.

It's all about timing and when particular cards trigger.

I see. "After you perform an attack" means all of the attack phase. I thought it was after I rolled the attack dice. What is the phrasing used that would mean "after rolling the attack dice"?

I vaguely recall another card/ability/upgrade but that meant he could use it immediately afterwards -- was it Colonel Vessery or was there someone/something else?

Yep, Colonel Vessery is the one you're thinking of; he actually says "after rolling dice". There's also an Astromech that gives you the chance to get your target lock back as soon as you spend it, but it also forbids you from spending that new one during the same attack.

It would typically be worded "immediately after rolling..."

Vessery is a good example. If someone has a target lock on his target, he can acquire a target lock immediately after rolling dice, which means he can use it to reroll his dice during his attack. An ability like this is an exception to the norm, and thus make him quite powerful.

There was something I read a while ago about trigger conditions and that they normally go at the "beginning" of something (like an attack) or "after" something. So the phrasing on the card or ability is quite important as to when it actually triggers.
