Elevating Howlrunner to sainthood

By Norsehound, in Star Wars: Armada

Just an observation here, not based on the mechanics of Armada.

So, "Howlrunner" began as a fluff creation by the Decipher team in 1998 to distinguish some of the TIE Fighters chasing the Falcon out of cloud city. This was, purely, to get more characters into the game and we didn't see the pilot's faces anyway.

In 2008, the Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia fleshed her and her squadron out further.

Then she shows up in Galaxies, probably because she's one of the few TIE pilots who has a name and was current in the Galactic Civil War.

Then she shows up in X-Wing as the highest skilled TIE pilot, but additionally the best one to synergize with swarms.

Now here she is in Armada, buffing entire other squadrons flying with her and allowing them to hit harder with their attacks. She's so awesome capital ship commanders have to pay attention to her.

Not bad for someone who didn't technically appear in on-screen, was the fluff of the Decipher team's imagination, and who was most likely one of hundreds of squadron commanders on the Executor who just happened to pull duty that day. The way she is here, you'd think she'd be on the level of renowned aces like Wedge and her name whispered with fear by the rebel alliance.

Not that I'm complaining anything but sheesh! How about that?

Stay tuned for her article in Maxim.

I will.

I have no clue as to the accuracy of my imaginings, but I'm quite sure she looks like Scarlet Yohanssen.

Powerful, intelligent and capable women in Scifi, who would have thunked it? :)

After seeing the card art from Armada, I want an alt art card the same style for X-Wing.

She's always been my fav ship since I started X-Wing, so glad she's in Armada too!

Also hot, you forgot hot.

Because women can't be powerful, intelligent, and capable in sci-fi without also being insanely gorgeous.

You act like Han Solo, Carth Onasi, Luke Skywalker, Kyle Katarn, and so on, cannot be considered STUPIDLY attractive?

C'mon. It's fair for both men and women to be capable and attractive. Hell Obi-Wan was a hunk in his heyday.

According to the Wookiee , she served aboard the Avenger, not the Executor. Is the Wookiee in error? (It's possible.)

Thank goodness for that!

****, did I just score on the insensitivity meter?

Really minor complaint from me but, I would have prefered if they would have went with squadron name like Rogue Squadron and Obsidian Squadron instead of hero pilots like Luke and Howlrunner.

But you know, the game look so nice that I'll live happily with their decision.

I think they did this so they could also have a Rogue, Wraith, ECT... squadron.

Not so sure about that. In the base game, they called the generic fighter squadron: Tie fighter Squadron and X-Wing Squadron. So, you either field a generic Squadron or a named pilot.

Her story is the story of all heroes and villains...

;)

Right, but later on they may have Rogue as a Special squadron. Leaves room for expansion.

I see it as generic X-wing squadron or a squadron lead by a named pilot. It would've been nice to have unique squadron names like Rogue Sqd but it would limit the variety of unique abilities squadrons can have and squadron name are less recognizable than character names. Getting to fly Rogue squadron is not as exciting as flying squadrons led by Luke, Wedge and Tycho separately.

Meh, as I said it's just a really minor complaint that won't keep fun away. I know they can come up later with expensions to give squadron names, but I'm pretty sure that, if they do make expension to fighters, they will continue the name pilot road and make other famous pilot like Wedge or Horton.

I guess it's just that in a fleet level game, I would have prefered if they would have kept the fighters a little more generic: Named Pilot in the Dogfighting game (X-Wing) and specific Squadrons in the Fleet one (Armada). It would have show more the reputation of a squadron as a whole and not just their commander: ''Oh ****, we're up against the 181st!'' instead of ''Oh ****, we're up against Soontir Fel!''.

Purely a personal design choice that doesn't affect gameplay whatsoever, and I understand that some other people probably prefer it the way they actually did it. But you know, forums are made so we can complain and there really is nothing to complain about this game for now, so I have to find at least one.

That's perfectly understandable and I'm not against what you said.

I have to say, this card and the promise of more character face art for pilots makes me want to buy Armada a lot more than just the game itself. I love the way X-Wing has filled up/expanded the rosters of pilots, and having Armada give faces beyond the kinda stiff face from Galaxies is great.

The complaint is understandable. But these represent squadrons lead by the unique pilot, not just the pilot himself. They'll probably have Vader in there somewhere, and even though the card will say Vader it's representative of Black Squadron.

Also, it doesn't necessarily mean that the other can't be done. They could in the future still release a Rogue Squadron card with its own skills and abilities alongside the character-led squadrons.

You really want to open the can of worms of star wars characters that did not appear on screen and got their first "appearance" in some video game or comic or w/e, and then got expounded on time and time again until they were made out to be some spectacular fixture in star wars lore? Col serra sounds like Han Solo on steroids if you believe wookiepedia.

lol, yea I was trying to say that. apparently it was not coming out that way.

It just bugs me that her name is also a ship name. Maybe if i had ever met someone named Hurricane in RT it wouldn't bug me as much *L*

Actually, both are named after a rather creepy looking canine.
