Buying ships with 100 point limit in mind

By BigKahuna, in X-Wing

My collection is growing rapidly and there are many ships (and combinations of ships) that I have to try, so lots of fun stuff ahead.

As a relatively new player on the scene though I came to the stark realization that there are just some ships you don't need a lot of, or perhaps better to say you don't need more then X amount when building 100 point lists.

For example the Advanced Tie Fighter. Great ship, but I don't ever see myself flying more then one (at least not in the current state of the game).

I'm curious if anyone has ever compiled something like a "you don't need more then X of Y type" lists.

For example there is never any reason to have more then 8 Z95's or 8 tie fighters (again keeping 100 point limit in mind and strategic usefulness). You can't fit more then 8 in either, but a list of 8 of either ship is actually pretty feesable (Z95 swarm or Tie Swarm).

I'm more curious about the ships I don't have figured out. For example I bought 2 B Wings and 1 Y Wing and I'm wondering if It makes sense to buy more and if so how many? I play both Imperial and Rebel so I'm kind of looking at a break down ship by ship for both factions and perhaps some explanation so I can get my head around it.

Definitely get 1 more b-wing, so you can use a Biggs Walks the Dogs list.

NEVER get more than 1 advanced. It is a horrible ship.

Get 2 Interceptor Expansions and 1 Aces.

Get 2 TIE fighter expansions

Get 3 defenders

Get 4 phantoms

Get 3 firesprays

Get 2 Lambdas

Just my opinion though.

Edit: Not sure about the bomber, cause i don't have it. I don't play rebs though, so i can't advise you on those.

Two is probably enough, particularly with Rebel Aces in the mix. (See below.)

On the other hand: invest while supply is plentiful and demand is absent! Because you know they'll fix it eventually.

Get 2 Interceptor Expansions and 1 Aces.

You can easily live with 1 and 1, here.

Get 2 TIE fighter expansions

If you already have 2 core sets, you really only need 1 TIE Fighter expansion unless you have a particular reason to want to run a swarm with just TIE Fighters. (There are a lot of ways to improve swarms by swapping 1-2 TIEs for Interceptors, Bombers, etc.)

Get 3 defenders

I have two, and don't feel a particular lack.

Get 4 phantoms

I have two, and I may never run both. I doubt I'll ever run three, and I'm certain I'll never run four.

Get 3 firesprays

I have two, and don't feel a particular lack. Three Firesprays can be effective, but it has a number of bad matchups, and (IMO, of course) it's boring.

Get 2 Lambdas

Everyone needs one; IMO very few people need more than one.

Three TIE Bombers make a nice list: Jonus, two generic wingmates, and one TIE Fighter or TIE Interceptor escort.

As for Rebels, here's what I'd recommend for a reasonably comprehensive set:

  • 2 core sets + 1 X-wing expansion
  • 2 Y-wing expansions
  • 1-2 Falcon expansions (buy 2 only if you're certain you want to run double Falcons or Rebel Convoy)
  • 1 A-wing expansion
  • 2 B-wing expansions
  • 1 HWK expansion
  • 1 Rebel Aces
  • 2 E-wing expansions
  • 3 Z-95 expansions

I second Vorpal Sword's suggestions. I have 4 TIE Bombers, that makes a good alpha strike list, I may buy a fifth to run a swam with howlrunner. You could field up to 6 Bombers without upgrades at 96 points, but you probably wont want to.

If you're just looking at the mathematical limits you've got something like:

1. CR-90

2. Rebel Transport

3. E-Wing, Falcon

4: X-Wing, B-Wing

5: Y-Wing

6: HWK (not that I'd recommend more than two and even that may be pushing things), A-Wing

8: Z-95

Note your X-Wings can come from multiple sources and when Rebel Aces comes out you'd want your A and B Wings to split between expansion and packs. As painful as the cost is you'll want access to the cards from the Epic ships and the X-Wing from the Transport.

You can get similar numbers for the Empire although you may actually 'need' more that 3 Defenders if you want more than 3 Predator Upgrade cards. In fact Upgrade cards can push the 'need' for certain ships up if you want to run lots of a limited upgrade.

As for what you'd actually need to put forth a good showing at 100 points the lists will shrink considerably. I'm mostly agreeing with Vorpal Sword's listing for Rebel ships although there is still the issue with stuff from the Epic ships and occasionally one may want to run more Z-95s.

For the Empire my numbers guess is more like this:

Core x2 + TIE Expansion (5 is enough for many uses although a FULL swarm is 8)

Interceptor + Imperial Aces (although you may want a 4th at times and could run 5)

Bombers x3 (can run more, may run as 'fat TIE Fighters' with less, but I'd say this is the number if you want to run Bombers.)

Firespray 1-3 (One is a must and two can be nice but rarely will run 3 but may want it for six Stealth Devices)

Advanced 1

Lambda 1-4 (More is often for the upgrades but some have had luck running 4 in a squadron)

Phantom 2 (Can't see a good reason for more but I'll say you want 2 because it's such a unique ship to fly)

Defender 2 (Want to say 1 but two can go in a squad well and there's the Predator Upgrade you'll want in numbers)

This is easy. Apart from HWK and TIE ADV.

Any ship that's cheapest pilot is 12pts get 8

Any ship that's cheapest pilot is at or under 20pts get 5

Any ship that's cheapest pilot is at or under 25pts get 4

Any ship that's cheapest pilot is at or under 33pts get 3

Any ship that's cheapest pilot is at or under 50pts get 2

Any ship that's cheapest pilot is over 50pts get 1.

Now saying that it's what best combos to get.

X-wing you want starter, 2 expansions and transport.

Intercepters you want at least 2 aces and 5 expansions.

Bwings possibly 2 aces, 2 expansions

Awings 3 with the aces, 2 expansions.

Then you've got all the fun of awaiting next Waves and Aces sets.

100 points is not the total limit. You can play with 200 points you just have to agree on a point limit when you play against another person. Just for most tournaments and league play they cap it at 100 as a standard. There really is no limit. But at the 100 point limit here is the maximum number of the same model you can field.

A-Wing 5 (6 with Chardaan Refit)

B-Wing 4

E-Wing 3

X-Wing 4

Y-Wing 5

Z-95 8

HWK-290 6

YT-1300 3

YT-2400 3

Tie Fighter 8

Tie Advanced 4

Tie Bomber 6

Tie Interceptor 5

Tie Defender 3

Tie Phantom 4

Lambda Shuttle 4

Firespray-31 3

VT-49 Decimator 2

Now these list will probably not be as competitive (although the Sigma Squadron might be fun with 4 phantoms.) I see allot that get 2 of everything (4 for the Z95s) and call it good and they end up with a flexible selection for their squadron. 100 points is not the exact limit, you can play with more or less depending on how long of a match you want.

5-6 ties (2 core)

1 advanced

1 interceptor + 1-2 aces

1-2 firesprays

1-4 bombers (a weird one as you can go all in on bombers or just use them as cheap 6-hull filler ships)

1 shuttle

1 phantom

1 defender (more for predator cards if you desire)

X-wing : 4 (2 core, 1 expansion, 1 transport)

Y-wing: 1

A-wing: 1 (more with rebel aces probably)

Falcon: 1

B-wing: 2 (probably just one set of aces is good for this ship)

HWK: 1

E-wing: 1

Z-95: 3-4

my opinion for a reasonable collection, you can get more as desired (I certainly did) but it's overkill

8 of everything... 3 of every big base ship. 2 transports and one CR-90 should cover it..

Buy one of the ships you fancy play with them a while and buy more if you like, fancy more. Nothing worse than buying more than you need. If you want to try cards you don't have proxy or use from the internet, again if you then need the card for competitive play buy the expansion.

I am lucky that the group I play with detests mirror matches therefore we share each other's ships hence have had a go at 3x BH and double falcon but only have 1 of each. I won't buy more of these as I would not use them enough to justify and I want to buy whatever the big Imp ship will be and get Armada.
