The meaning of the word DECIMATE

By SmartCookie, in X-Wing

Now, the historic definition is: "To kill one in every ten of (a group of people, originally a mutinous Roman legion) as a punishment for the whole group."

The modern meaning is: "To kill, destroy, or remove a large proportion of the thing being decimated."

However, we now have the definition of the word in that very special galaxy far, far away: "To utterly kill, destroy, and annihilate any and all fragments of the Rebel Scum."

The Romans had this down as an "art" as they made the other 9 men in the cohort do the killing.....

I like to think of Rear Admiral Chiraneau playing the Foo Fighters on the bridge of the Dauntless...

"One in te-en, one in te-en, one in teeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen"

I'm also looking forward to going bowling for TIE fighters with this baby :D

Those funny old Romans and their japes:)

What FFG does to my wallet with all of these awesome releases!

Yeah one of the expressions from roman era that trascended into modern languague. I for one love thr "Crasus error" (hope that's how it's said on english).

I'm not sure what you mean, what is it in your own?

Although it was considered a disgrace for the general as well, and was hardly ever used until Crassus opened the floodgates, but even then it was rare, once per 50 years perhaps?

Now i realize it is only used on portuguese and spanish. It means a fatal and very wrong mistake. It comes from :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Licinius_Crassus

In some Latin languages, such as Portuguese and Spanish, there is a popular expression used to describe a fatal error which is a "Crassus' error", pertaining the strategic error of Crassus which led to his demise in Parthia

Yeah, I know Marcus, but I was asking because I thought you might have misspelled Croesus who of course is very famous for the mistake he made interlreting the Delphic oracle. Especially because Crassus and Croesus were both famous for being extremely wealthy. :P.

To my knowledge there's indeed no saying in English with regards to MLC.

****, I wish I lived in a country where people knew who Crassus was. Hell, I'd even settle for them thinking of him as that oyster and snail guy. The word decimate is pretty much a lost cause though, and there are many worthier lost causes ahead of it in line. Now if one of my old profs would stop yelling at me for split infinitives....

Hmm, i wrote Crasus not Croesus lol, misspelled one "S", basically because on spanish it is just Craso. I knew you know who Crassus was, i was just linking the source and quoting the part to clarify what i meant in my first post.

Penguin, most people don't know from where it comes anyways. It is just a saying.
