New GenCon guess – Star Wars: Hordes

By patox, in X-Wing

What? Star Wars: Hordes?

It won't be that name, It'll probably be more like:

Star Wars: Outer Rim

Star Wars: Fringers

Star Wars: Syndicate

Hordes is actually a reference to the miniatures game that's compatible with Warmachine.

What I'm talking about for a Fantasy Flight GenCon announcement is a whole new starter box set and expansions for a completely independent, but compatible game to Star Wars: X-Wing.

Reading all the threads. Seeing how polarizing the 3rd faction is. Knowing how established the X-Wing ships are. This made me wonder.

What other game system was able to introduce a whole new part for their existing system and make it work? That would be Privateer Press Warmachine. About 2 years into their core game system, they introduced a new game with a whole new set of factions. That was Hordes.

Seeing Star Wars: Armada made me think that FFG might follow the same idea. Instead of adding a factions to X-Wing, they would come up with something completely independent of Star Wars: X-Wing.

Maybe this new game will have entirely different movement templates, maybe even different attack and defense dice. None of the upgrades will be compatible between X-Wing and this new system. Maybe there's no Focus or Evade.

They would release the Starter Box and then expansions to follow on. But none of it would combo with X-Wing, except the ability for the ships to fight each other.

I highly doubt they will announce another Star Wars game, right on the heels of the announcement of a Star Wars game.

If I read Patox correctly, it won't really be a new game; just a different starter set, with maybe some more mission-driven options, and some unorthodox upgrades.

I think that would be an awesome addition to the game!

I think he means a new game:

"a completely independent, but compatible game to Star Wars: X-Wing."

X-wing revised(2nd edition)?

As I said before, this is pretty much the only way I would countenance a new faction. People can have all the strange new ships they want without alienating the "if it's not broke" crowd.

Yes, I read what he said. I guess your interpretation of this depends on what you understand as a separate game. If it has the same basic ruleset and is compatible, then I don't think of it as really a new game. So, our differences are semantic.

Are 'Edge of Empire' and 'Age of Rebellion' really separate games? (Not a rhetorical question; I'm genuinely interested.)

You mean, that you're not going to gather the hordes of luddites to storm the FFG castle if they have a third-faction game?

But, here's the thing: in order to sell more stuff, don't they have an interest in ruling that these new ships are permissable in Tournaments? (Of course, they would have had a similar interest with the GR-75 and CR-90.)

I think you just answered your own question. Want to run a mixed X-Wing / Pirate event? Go for it. Is X-Wing still dominant at your local game store? Do that instead. Want to play epic every now and again? You can do that too!

So let's start designing a standalone game set in the Star Wars universe with two other factions but fully compatible with X-Wing.

What factions, to start?

Scoundrels vs Criminals? That would give us the broadest reach with Scoundrels having people like Talon Karrde and the Terriks vs Hutts and Black Sun. The EU is rather lousy with named smugglers and pirates, so there's enough to use.

I'd rather name my own, using the Bond girl formula as a template. Hugh Jwanger, piloting everyone's favorite Lancer-class frigate, Silver Bullet.

This idea can only be described with one word... "Amazeballs".

You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought.

Damage is the only thing that needs to be shared.

The new system could have a 20 sided damage dice. Just as long as the two sides can inflict damage on each other. They could be entirely different bases. It could be a round base. The Range Ruler might be Zig-Zag (like the armada movement). This is just an exaggeration to illustrate a point.

The only thing that needs to be shared is damaging each other.
