Well, I haven't seen a thread about this yet, so let's get some fresh discussion going!
As we all know, the X-Wing and TIE Fighter video games featured all manner of non-ship space objects - space stations, cargo containers, mines, docks, asteroid bases, etc. (and I threw World Devastators in the title because, well, I think they're awesome).
These were a ton of fun in the video games because they really created a sense of narrative - instead of just flying around an empty starfield in the middle of nowhere, these objects helped give you a sense of place .
We don't have anything like this in the X-Wing miniatures game, probably for good reason - the scaling isn't right for the larger objects.
But would these things have a place in Armada?
I'd like to think so, but I'm not sure they'd be big sellers. For one thing, they wouldn't have an obvious role in tournaments, assuming FFG wants to push Armada as a competitive game like X-Wing. I think they'd be awesome for scenarios/campaigns, but the vast majority of players wouldn't be interested in such things. Or would they?
One of the things that I loved about Battlefleet Gothic - which I inevitably compare Armada to - is that it had rules and scenarios to utilize all of these things. It had rules for system patrol craft and static defenses and space stations and so on. But Games Workshop never actually produced models for these (although Forgeworld did do a few), aside from the Blackstone Fortress.
I'd love to see both rules and models for the above, but I don't know that they'd be viable for FFG.
What do you guys think?
