Foul Play: When are penalties applied?

By veector, in Blood Bowl: Team Manager

Are penalties applied after all payouts are gained but before specific improvements are selected?

Or...

Are penalties applied after improvements are selected?

I've assumed it's the first, but I'm not completely sure.

Follow up question too. I'm assuming that penalties only apply to your improvement pile and cannot remove improvements already gained from a previous round. Is that correct?

Hi veector,

the penalties from the cheating tokens are applied at the end of the "revealing cheating token" step of the scoreboard phase (p 2 of the foul play rules) so BEFORE you collect the payouts and improvements (look at the back page of the BBTM handbook, all the phases and steps are mentionned).

the penaties received from the restrictive effects of stadiums that you broke are applied at the end of the "reveal improvement pile" step of the scoreboard (p 2), so AFTER you collected the payouts and improvements.

So to answer your last question, penalties doesn't always apply to your improvement pile and may remove improvements already gained , it just depends when you got them.

So the penalties from cheating tokens can remove improvements already gained? Sounds a bit harsh.

Yes, for example, when you lose fans or when you have to return team or staff upgrades at the bottom of their deck.

I only mention what is written in the rules. The "revealing cheating token" step is before the "collecting payouts" step, and the latter is before the "revealing improvement pile" step.

Actually, I see no rule stating when stadium penalties are applied. (That is to say, some kind of special distinction) It seems to me that the governing rule is that " Each time a manager receives a penalty, he draws one Penalty card from the Penalty deck and places it facedown in front of him without looking at it."

I think (and I could be wrong) that where it says Penalties revealed on cheating tokens are applied at the end of the Reveal Cheating Tokens step" means by "applied" that you dole out the facedown penalty cards at that time to account for ejections. Remember that ejections negate all other cheat tokens on that player including (as best I can tell) penalties. To have two different sets of penalty resolution times seems too persnickety even for an FFG game. :)

Scottgun, i think you might be....right !

I did not account for the ejection tokens and for their eventual effect on the penalty cards.

Your explanation seems to be more logical. But if we could get an official confirmation from FFG, it would be more secure.

Well done !

Thanks. I agree an official word would be helpful as that there is some confusing wording there.

Here are some tips for you and if you think it's useful please share it with your frieds.TKS :)
