Corran Vs. Corran How does his ability work?

By Osoroshii, in X-Wing

Me and Whist13r were playing a game of X-Wing both piloting a Corran E-Wing. My Corran had VI on him so he was at PS10 while Whist13r's Corran was at PS8. if both Corrans want to use the second shot how would that work. Whist13r had initiative in the match but I had the higher PS. does his ability go off first? Does the PS matter for this second Shot? If one is killed before the ability is used, do they still get a shot? I'm not finding any info in the FAQ on this. What do you all think should happen?

There's an answer to this in the Rules form. Here's what Frank said.

Well, I checked the inbox this morning and Frank has answered the question. Some may be surprised. Some were correct. Some were almost there.

Rule Question:

In a mirror match where two players are fielding Corran Horn.

Player A has Corran with Veteran Instincts (PS10).

Player B has Corran (PS8), but has initiative also.

In the End Phase, both Corrans are in a position to shoot each other.

Who goes first and why?

The player with initiative (player B). This is similar to two ships that both have the “Damage Cockpit” Damage card (where both ships have pilot skill reduced to “0”).

So the mention of the Damage Cockpit card brought Pilot Skill back into the equation, so I asked:

OK, but do both ships get to fire? If Player B destroys Player A, does A get a return shot?

And Frank replied:

"Yes. Simultaneous Attack Rule still applies. Both players need to declare their intentions to attack (or not) at the start of the End phase before either ship has attacked."

I'm guessing it has 100% to do with initiative and if a ship were to be destroyed simultaneous fire rule would come into play.

Yes and no. According to Frank, it goes in order based on init, but because both actions trigger on the start of End Phase, both get to go off before either one is fully resolved.

That blew my mind, wow! Probably one of the coolest rule questions I've ever seen.

I wonder why it wouldn't just go off pilot skill like a normal attack, just in a different phase... that seems odd to me.

that seems odd to me.

If you read over the thread on the rules section we kinda get into why it works like it does.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around magnets.

Precisely because it isn't a normal attack, but an effect that triggers without reference to pilot skill. Since both players have the trigger occur at the same time, initiative determines the order.
