Then there are those goofy wings on the back...I still don't know what direction those things are pointing in, or how many there are.
Also, it doesn't really look like a Dreadnaught, which (originally, pre-EAW, which may have changed things) the assault frigate is supposed to be based on.

The "goofy wings" are banks of maneuvering jets to increase its speed and turning ability. The assault frigates are stripped-down and redesigned dreadnaughts, so they need some serious help in the speed and maneuverability department.

Based on Team Covenant photos, the Imp fighter pack includes interceotirs, advanced, and bombers at least, while rebels include Ys, Bs, and As.

I like the assault frigate myself, but I'm not sure I care for that model.
Although all this has caused me to seriously think about dropping $20 and getting the game again though stream.

That's something I like about Armada... The point cost of the ships is quite a bit higher relative to the max points, then X-Wing is. That means over all smaller lists.
For example 3 VSD's wouldn't likely be a good list, because you have so few points left over for upgrades. That means unlike X-Wing where I buy 3, 4 or more of everything I'll be buying 1 maybe 2 here.

I also heard on a live stream just now that the box with be twice as deep as Arkham Horror so much bigger than X-wings starter set.... Looks like there will be good value in the set...

That's kinda why I like it. It's a Laser Spitting Space Whale of Death. I have fond memories of it gliding lazily through the sea of stars to devour swarms of tiny TIE fighters and barf death on Star Destroyers. Good times.
