Dodge and side step talents in starship combat

By Ankiseth, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

Hello!!! I´ve been figuring out ways to make pilots better survive enemy fire. I´ve tried with different tactics. So far the only idea that maybe can work is to apply dodge and side step talents to upgrade the difficulties to be hit. I can rationalize better the dodge talent like the fast thinking and rapid reaction reflexes that a pilot can put into motion when tries to avoid enemy fire, but side step makes me think twice.

Obviously this means that it should be necessary to acquire additional specialitations such as inflitrator and tactician (ace pilot/infiltrator, pilot/inflitrator/tactician)

What do you think?

I think you'll find effective use of angled deflectors and the Defensive Driving talent to be more beneficial....

Also you may want to talk to your GM about encounter design. A lot of people get Rogue Squadronitis and toss entire squadrons of enemies at their players, and that's not really a good idea in this system, at least not till the players get super advanced. This systems prefers smaller engagements.

Oh, and move into terrain. Asteroid fields, capital ship gun "kill zones," space stations, anything you can think of that isn't open space. open space is a death trap.

Additionally there's the squadron rules options....

I'm working on a whole... thing explaining stuff like this.

I would allow the Sense power to apply its Ongoing Effects in Starship combat, but not Dodge or Side Step. There are pilot talents and maneuver that can already aid in starship defense.

Isn't evasive maneuvers Dodge for starships?

Essentially.

Oh and don't forget the Tricky Target talent. Doesn't help much in every dogfight, but if you're in a snubfighter and being attacked by a freighter or shuttle, that extra Difficulty die to hit you is a nice boon :) And it's always on.

There's also Brilliant Evasion which (I think?) is unprecedented for one-on-one combat.

I think the existing Ace Talents are known about. The issue, I suspect, is how far down the tree they are. Starting pilot characters will have to survive long enough to get access, versus the relative ease of getting Dodge/Sidestep.

Evasive Maneuvers isn't Dodge. It's Side Step for vehicles.

Yeah, more Side Step than Dodge, this is true.

Check out the Starfighter Ace's new talent, "Intuitive Evasion." Already committed a Force Die to Sense? Wanna commit more? Pick up a couple ranks of this talent, commit your other two Force dice, and be nigh-unhittable. Seriously...possible 4 upgrades with that combo, 5 with Evasive Maneuvers. Add in some shielding and Tricky Target...whew.
