Star Wars: Armada and Star Wars: X-Wing Combined

By Coldmoonrising, in Star Wars: Armada

I know this is a silly thought but the first thing I thought of, while I was reading the announcement post, was having a side game of X-Wing when x-wings and tie fighters came within range of one another.

Effectively it would be a zoom-in on the action at hand there. So, depending on how the x-wings and tie fighters interact with each other, it would be a funny break form Armada to break off into a round or two of X-Wing to decide that damage there. I know I'm getting ahead of myself but this could be a fun variant here. /shrugs/ Just a thought.

I think one of the issues is that even the most basic skirmish in Armada would be an Epic Play 200 point game in X-Wing Miniatures. I'm not sure I could find anyone to invest time into a five or six hour game.

Nah. What you do is every time X-Wings and Ties come into contact in armada you play a mini game of X-Wing with 3 X vs 3 Ties.

Yes!

That thought occurred to me as well .

I think it'll be more fun when the focus is on playing X-Wing with Armada being the backdrop than people who are really eager to play Armada.

I disagree. I love X-Wing, but capital ship combat is something I love even more.

It's the reason why I still play Battlefleet Gothic.

Different strokes for different folks.

I've mentioned before where I think the most effective way to combine the two is to have the X-Wing game played first, as a precursor to the Armada game, with the outcome of the X-Wing game having an effect on the Armada game.

Quick example:

100-point X-Wing game

Sensitive information regarding the Imperial Navy's maneuvers and their recon of Rebel strength is being transported via shuttle to Coruscant. The shuttle's long range communication has been disabled, thus the information must be transported instead of broadcast. The Empire is escorting the shuttle to its hyperspace jump position (Rebel edge of play field).

Empire: Escort senator's shuttle to opposite end of the play area or destroy Rebel forces (Outcome 1).

Rebels: Destroy senator's shuttle (Outcome 2) or disable shuttle with 6 ion tokens and destroy Imperial forces (Outcome 3).

Outcome 1: Empire gains 20% more points to use in Armada battle.

Outcome 2: No effect on Armada battle.

Outcome 3: Rebellion gains 20% more points to use in Armada battle.

See, this was my thought here. Just a fun idea.

3 X wings vs 3 tie fighters may not be the best fight, as unless the person piloting the ties can position themselves very well they are left rather open. Though I guess you could have it so that each squadron counts as 50 points or so to help even it out a little bit. And then just imagine having a game of armada going on with the "admiral" commanding it while your friends fly your respective fighter squadrons around in X wing.

Maybe where all squadrons at range 1 can participate and if a capital ship is in range and choose anti squadron weapons as its attack maybe they can fire pot shots every once and a while at the fighters. Maybe even having it where moving ships out o the play area allows them to retreat.

All of this, gold! :D

seems totally feasible and really fun to me! great idea

I'm sure there are folks that will build campaigns around the two games. I think the Objective style X-wing matches would suit this better than the standard dogfight.

Once they bring in the ground combat game ( yes I know i'm getting ahead of myself, but I can't help it) you can really simulate Battle of Endor. Fleet Battle + Shield Generator on Ground + Death Star Run...

You could even have a larger group play them all in tandem. Points from Armada lead to Reinforcements in X-wing or Air Support in a Ground game. Destroyed points in X-Wing lead to Destroyed (or damaged) Squadrons in Armada, or sacrifice x-wing ships (fly off board) for air support. Completing objectives in each game would result in a benefit or detriment to the other.

I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with when they get Armada in hand...and maybe by 2017 we'll have a ground game to add in :)

You misunderstand what I'm saying. I'm reflecting on the assumption of combining the two games (which is what this thread is about).

I'm saying that if your focus is on playing Armada, having breakout games of X-Wing will probably just delay the great fun you're trying to have playing Armada. On the other hand, if your main focus is playing X-Wing, I think that the Armada backdrop could lend some awesome narrative stakes to your X-Wing games.

I'd quibble with the outcomes you picked out, but in general I think something like this would be a LOT more feasible than playing out starfighters' interactions using X-wing Minis rules.

I haven't played Armada (just getting into Xwing! :D ) but a simple way to do it would be to just have

and armada scenario where the fighters get to each other first. have the Xwing dogfight limited to a certain number of turns

(10-12?) then figure out the damage (unless someone wins) then say "The Capital ships have arrived!" and then revert to Armada.

Then the Xwing Dogfight would impact the Armada battle, but It wouldn't be to complicated.
