Marksmanship or Expose for Rear Admiral Chiraneau?

By TheGreedyMerchant, in X-Wing

My wisdom of what is better pales in comparison to many others on these forums as I have just started playing this past week. Honestly I think Marksmanship would be better in this situation and just eat the point.

He already has a marksmanship-like ability, so the only way you get any use out of marksmanship is if you roll 2+ eye results. So I would say expose is better. But then if you take expose, the chances of you missing are slim, so gunner is kind of useless. So I say take expose, lose gunner, and make one of those tie fighters better.

See, like I said... someone with more Wisdom. Thanks for this as I learned something as well.

I'm just so used to gunner on my expensive ships I don't consider anything else. It will be worth trying him without gunner for sure since he will be rolling "phantom" dice.

Edit: Perhaps no crew at all then.

You should also consider Predator. This way you roll your attack. You will certainly get a reroll, possibly two. Then, you will get to turn one eye into a crit. It's like a mini-focus and a mini-TL in every attack. Since you can drop gunner, you have plenty of points for upgrades. Indeed, might not be a bad place for Saboteur, since you will have an action free. Or Fleet Officer to hand out focuses.

To be even more precise, if you're Chiraneau you can only make offensive use of Marksmanship (or focus, for that matter) 15.6% of the time when rolling 3 dice and 26.2% of the time when rolling 4. So the Capn's suggestions are good ones: dropping Marksmanship + Gunner for Expose frees up 4 points, and if you were to drop Weapons Engineer too, you have 44 points to spend on your escorts instead of 37.

EDIT: Wow, double-ninja'ed. I like the new version better, but I really like SG's idea of running Chiraneau + Predator + Fleet Officer. That leaves you with enough for four Academy Pilots, as well as a host of other tricks you could pull.

Let's calm down. I'm pretty sure the only EPTs that anyone is allowed to use are Push the Limit and Veteran Instincts.

EDIT: snark aside, Expose sounds good here. Is there errata or an FAQ on how Expose interacts with a value that's already 0, though?

Its not mentioned in any rules or FAQ, but it IS mentioned in the Decimator spoiler article that it works. Appears we may have found the diamond in the rough, aka the only decent use of Expose in the game.

I'm eager to get Expose with Experimental Interface onto a Decimator. Phantom dice on a 360 turret in addition to Focus or TL (or both!)... all for a stress. Also a bunch of points, but that's a given.

I have a whole thread elsewhere on Expose + Experimental Interface.

There's no explicit guidance on how to handle a value that would be reduced to 0, but there's a straightforward argument that Agility at least can't be reduced further: please show me how to roll -1 defense dice.

This I think sounds promising.

Two ties that if ignored can really lay on some hurt. If both shot the same target that's two dmg to a ship within range one of the damaged ship

Plus the Decimator has 4 attack dice and can still get a focus to help modify its dice.

Plus one academy to get in the way. Block and be fodder

Does fleet officer work on your own ship? Could I activate fleet officer and then give a focus to the decimator and then another focus to a different ship? I'm still unsure about "friendly ship".

Attacker rolls an additional red die? :P
