Galactic Civil War Era Capital Ships

By An Irishman, in Star Wars: Armada

I was very interested in Battlefield Gothic, but I had sticker shock and was never going to end up painting my miniatures.. Looking back I really wish I had done it. Looks like such a great game.

Yeah I loved BFG but any minis game is expensive enough that I have to pick carefully. Armada should be a blast though in many ways I miss the days when space wargames used counters instead of minis just because you could get two or three fleet's worth of counters for the cost of one mini warship. Plus I suck at painting.

...and the CC9600...eh, who knows?

Was designed as an analogue to the Strike Cruiser.

The CC-9600 is more a reflection of the Strike Cruiser then an analogue IMO Both carry Ion Cannons and Turbolasers but CC-9600 has more turbolasers while the Strike has more Ion Cannons. Also The CC-9600 carries troops but no fighters while the Strike carries fighters but no troops.

That's fair, although most of the ships from Rebellion have little to no existence in the EU outside of that game.

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing some more obscure ships for the Rebels since admittedly they have less capital ships to choose from, but whatever FFG comes up with, I hope they avoid the mirror-image type balancing that went on in Rebellion.

You're definitely right about one thing, though - FFG has been really good about making aesthetically pleasing models. Since there isn't much information out there on some of the more obscure ships, a little aesthetic touching up could be in order, and I could get behind that.

The Bulwark class was retroconned to be the Bulwark mark III. The Bulwark Mark I appeared in Luke Skywalker and the Shadow of Mindor and a few Essential guides including Warfare which FFG likes a lot based on how much they drew from it for Age of Rebellion. Also the Mark III appears in the Invasion comics and is mentioned in the Essential Guide to Warfare and the Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.

A modified version of the Quaser Fire class Bulk Cruiser Carrier conversion, AKA the Rebel Escort Carrier from Rebellion, appeared in Truce at Bakura and Quaser Fire carriers appeared in X-Wing: Solo Command and New Jedi Order: Heroes Trial.

A group of a modified version of the CC-7700 appeared in Luke Skywalker and the Shadow of Mindor while the regular version appeared in Fate of the Jedi: Conviction plus was mentioned in a number of the Essential Guides.

The Dauntless class appeared in the Crimson Empire comics and pictures of it appeared in the D20 New Jedi Orde Sourcebook and the Saga Rebellion era Campaign Guide.

In short the only ships introduced in Rebellion that haven't appeared elsewhere are the CC-9600 class Frigate and Liberator class Cruiser.

I'm personally hoping FFG converts all of the ships in rebellion to the EOE/AOR/F&D system and Armada but we'll see.

While I wouldn't mind seeing the CC-9600 being quietly forgotten, it'd be a shame if Rebellion was the only place where the liberator saw the light. It's a pretty **** cool ship.

I like the CC-9600 but yeah if they can only include one then the Liberator makes more sense. (One of my standard light task force mixes in Rebellion is a Liberator, 2 or 3 Corellian Gunships, and 3 to 5 CC-9600s sometimes with a CC-7700 thrown in for interdiction purposes)

That was what I loved about the old fanmade D6 Starship supplement, it had the Liberators and both CC ships from Rebellion though I think whoever statted the Rebellion ships for it was drunk, very tired, or very distracted at the time since the supplement's CC-7700 stats outgun its CC-9600 stats and anything else in its size class while its Liberator stats outgun anything smaller then Executor including the Bulwark III..

I loved the Liberator as well. That thing was op, though: all those squadrons, great shielding, and respectable firepower...

I don't know about being overpowered since in most areas not related to shields the Impstar I out classed it but it probably should have cost a little more to build and maintain.

It's funny how many EU ships keep cropping up or new ones get invented, yet there's actually a number of capital ships that haven't been seen anywhere outside of Return of the Jedi.

The Dornean Gunship took twenty years to get a name/background despite appearing in the middle of several key shots, while several background ships still haven't been properly identified. And don't get me started on the Communications Star Destroyer.

Sure, a lot of them were 'junk' models, but Lucasfilm never chose to revise that battle's special effects so there they remain. You'd think somebody would have gone through the ILM archives or LFL production records and picked one to expand upon for an RPG book or game or something.

The Communications Star Destroyer was a Praetor Mark II according to the Essential Guide to warfare. And yeah I would love if all the ships seen in ROTJ appear in the RPG system and Armada game but there are a lot of EU ships I would like to see as well.
